I'd rate this as good as, if not better than the original, if only because we see a world-weary Rambo who can no longer use a quick dose of Vietnam memories or friendship links to be motivated. He has to actually search deep within himself back to the original reason why he became who he was.

That's why we see him going home at the end. The only way he could find himself was to go full circle. Everything else -- Tennessee, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Myanmar -- was just a distraction.

What is missing in rambo IV is the personal relationship between rambo and the antagonist badguy. In all other 3 movies, there was suspense building up between the bad guy and rambo, and some kind of motivation building up in the bad guy to go to great lenghts to hunt rambo down. Also they all succeeded in hurting rambo either physically or emotionally, the bad guy in rambo 4 has no clue who rambo is or what hit him in the end, like some innocent bystander, like some mortar shell hit him.

This movie seemed to focus less on any real relationships and maybe more on the brutal ugliness of war - nothing pretty, just gory, maybe that was the point this time.

It is a joy and relief to find at the final scene that Rambo is going back to America, to his country roads after going through bitter and bloody life. Now he find a peace and looking to spend rest of his life in his homeland doing anything but with a gun. A perfect end (in terms of story, not the scene) for a hero like him..

The interesting thing is, I actually like this movie better than the Expendables. I think that, despite being a continuation of Rambo saga, Part 4 appear to not have concerned itself too much with being "old school". Of course I'm not saying the Expendables is bad- it IS created with being "old school" in mind, I just think Rambo has more of humanity in it than the Expendables does.
