The genesis recording was done in space as the ship passed over the dark side of the moon and the planet earth was blocked from sight, its to emphasise the distance of earth, not that the music is about god
Why does there have to be a religious argument on every song that even mentions God? The music is good, the Earth is beautiful and we are all human beings. We are individuals and therefore there will never be a complete unity of thought. Athiests should let those who believe in God practise their faith in peace, and believers should not try to judge those who disagree with them. Arguing isn't going to give a true image of the peace our faith brings. Only God is perfect so only He can judge us.
Man kind seems too arrogant when pretend saying god is an exclusive human being concept. I could be an embarrasing confirmation from another world's life point of view.
Faith is simply belief in something other than ourselves. nothing more and nothing less. believe in what you will, all over the world and allowing others to believe as they will, will make the world a better place, and make us all better for it.

That's the bullshit most religions try to push down the throat to everyone. If you don't do this or believe in that you will go to hell and blah blah blah. As long as religions exist the human race will never be free.
Faith is something you believe in, religion is something other people want you to believe in. So faith is in everyone's hearth, religion is just politics.

"Since the finale of the novel is a musical concert, I was delighted when Mike Oldfield told me that he wished to compose a suite inspired by it. I was particularly impressed by the music he wrote for The Killing Fields and now, having played the CD of The Songs of Distant Earth, I feel he has lived up to my expectations. Welcome back into space, Mike: there's still lots of room out here."
@do0rkn0b i know it's an old comment, but come on. its when apollo 10 ( i think ) was coming around the moon on christmas day 1968. that's the relevance. you're an american for christ sake!
Oldfield's music was inspired by a book by Arthur C Clarke by the same title. Great book--my favorite by Clarke. Always thought it would make a great movie, if it were done right, and Oldfield's music would make a great soundtrack to it. Too bad Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke are no longer around to make it happen.
I got this album when it first came out, it wasn't even made in the US then, so I had to pay the megabucks for the import, I think it was $40 ouch! but thas was one of the best money ever spent. I am not going to say much about the music, the album speaks for itself, it is simply a masterpiece. =)
@betterthansex123 Bible quote or not, these are ranked as some of the most important words ever spoken. Jim lovell, Frank Borman, and Bill Anders said them from an orbit around the moon in 1968. When you consider the original broadcast, how you could see this little marble and that was earth, and these words, you cannot help but feel a chill because of how small it made you feel. Religious or not, they still give this agnostic man chills just hearing them.
i really love the book. it was one of the best sf-fic ive read. it really creates oceanic planetary environment... endless sea and a tropic island... Arthur C. Clarke lived in sri Lanka for a longtime and i think hes experience really influenced the story.
Images of Earth from space make me feel one thing... How small we are.
We are simply a fraction of a fraction of a mm in the Space Map, and that only covers our solar system of the Milky Way. I dont belive in God nor any religion, I think it was all chance. But still, these pictures make me feel tiny, then again anything we know is when comparing it to sizes and distances and mind-boggling as some in our Galaxy.
@livingmylifeatmach2 I am saddened by the fact that you do not believe in any type of higher power. Beauty cannot possibly be interpreted as chance if you were to really look at it and experience. It is impossible for me to even entertain the thought that a small and destructive force such as mankind has nothing going for it except a shortlived 70 or so years....and then nothing. I refuse to believe in such rubbish. Hope is all!....and life is eternal!
@livingmylifeatmach2 You use science to wash God out of the equation but I believe God gave us this universe to explore, to learn from and become at peace with. Everything within nature from the cells in plants up to the formation of solar systems is all to perfect for it to be chance. Before you think of science over-riding God think that maybe it was He who gave us that science to manipulate. Peace my friend 0:-)
Evidence please. Otherwise there is no reason to believe God exists. I would reverse what you say and put it to you that God is used to try and wash science out of the equation. Rather than admit "I don't know" religion instead injects God into every gap in our knowledge.
@nashertheatheist Ah the old argument that all scientist/atheists use to reinforce their disbelief in God. I could easily say evidence please that he doesn't exist otherwise there is no reason to believe that there isn't. I admit that there are ppl who resolutely believe that there is a God and no such thing as evolution etc etc but there are also scientists who say blah blah everything is chance. I have my belief and it is that science is a tool of God to help us understand his creations.
Don't make the mistake of thinking atheists explicitly "believe there is no God". This is only true of a very few "gnostic" or "strong" atheists. I am an "agnostic" or "weak" atheist. Rather than believing "there IS NO God" I instead "DO NOT believe there IS a God". This difference is subtle but important. One is a positive claim that require evidence. The other-the position I take-is the default one. There is no empirical evidence whatsoever for either side so no reason to believe
@nashertheatheist No, no physical tangible evidence whether there is or not so there is no reason to not believe either. Anyway, lovely discussing this with you. Be happy and have peace :)
Clearly you mean to bring the discussion to a close, but I'll just add one more thing:
That's how science works... if there is no evidence backing a hypothesis, you go back to the drawing board and come up with a new one, or you hold up your hands and say "I don't know" until more evidence comes through. Otherwise we leave ourselves open to all sorts of crazy ideas.
The God hypothesis has no evidence behind it, so as a scientist I can only dismiss it.
@nashertheatheist I am a scientist myself and work for a pharmaceutical research company and at present we have no evidence to assume there is a cure for cancer but we don't dismiss the idea for a cure we keep on trying to find a means to understand. Now I shall bring the discussion to a close to avoid us constantly going round in circles. Good luck in everything you do.
The research done into cancer is looking for evidence. When someone asks "how do we cure cancer" you say "I don't know" and look for evidence in order to formulate a hypothesis. When you find something that might be a cure, THEN you make a hypothesis and test it.
Notice that not one scientist has hypothesised "God is the cure". There is no evidence. Yet on the matter of the universe itself you seem to hold God to different standards of evidence.
@nashertheatheist The existence of God should not be viewed as a fact before the evidence, but rather as a hypothesis. It is a hypothesis for the existence of the universe. A hypothesis that can never really be proven. Same with atheism however. There isn't proof that the universe arose spontaneously. Your argument suits agnosticism better than atheism, which is based on assumption like theism.
I am an "agnostic atheist", sometimes referred to as a "weak atheist". I don't claim to know one way or the other (agnostic), but I do not believe in God (atheist) for lack of evidence. "A"="non" "theist"="believer in a god".
Contrary to popular belief, this is the position of most atheists. Atheists that believe "there is no God" are quite hard to come by. Even Dawkins, that public atheist face, doesn't fall into that category.
@draoicht22 Millions of people eat red meat as a regular part of their diet and in comparison only a small percentage get cancer. To give up red meat, give up alcohol, give up using mobile phones, give up living near electricity pylons...infact give up living near electricity in general, give up being a baker because flour is a carcinogen, give up salt altogether as well.....the list goes on. Remember the key word in all of the above MODERATION
beautiful! thank you. :)

There is no empirical evidence whatsoever for either side so no reason to believe
nashertheatheist 4 months ago
@nashertheatheist No, no physical tangible evidence whether there is or not so there is no reason to not believe either. Anyway, lovely discussing this with you. Be happy and have peace :)

@cmdfarsight

@cmdfarsight
It's all just basic methodology.
nashertheatheist 4 months ago
@nashertheatheist The existence of God should not be viewed as a fact before the evidence, but rather as a hypothesis. It is a hypothesis for the existence of the universe. A hypothesis that can never really be proven. Same with atheism however. There isn't proof that the universe arose spontaneously. Your argument suits agnosticism better than atheism, which is based on assumption like theism.

@Samurai4Jesus

@cmdfarsight give up red meat is the cure or should i say prevention!
so in essence education is the cure.
draoicht22 4 months ago
@draoicht22 Millions of people eat red meat as a regular part of their diet and in comparison only a small percentage get cancer. To give up red meat, give up alcohol, give up using mobile phones, give up living near electricity pylons...infact give up living near electricity in general, give up being a baker because flour is a carcinogen, give up salt altogether as well.....the list goes on. Remember the key word in all of the above MODERATION
