  • Lightning Hopkins is also a great delta blues man

  • if this was to be classed it would be called "mississippi hill country" blues - in that it's RL burnside's song and he's from that region, but his style was very much his own

as far as i remember - most of the blues in the film was based off of stuff by burnside and mississippi fred mcdowell

  • i love swamp blues. i love that southern pain u hear.

  • Samuel actually learned to play the guitar for the film... Great movie great songs

  • I have a question. After watching this movie, i've been quite interested in blues. What kind of blues would this be considered, and does it actually sound like this?

  • @HakumeiHogosha

i'd say classic blues or try searchin on wiki under Country blues

  • @HakumeiHogosha Delta blues might be what your looking for

  • @HakumeiHogosha If you're really interested, go back and start with Robert Johnson...back in the early 20's. Then follow up through now. So many great artists, types...Delta...which is what this is. Try Chicago Blues...Try listening to Joe Bonamassa (one of today's greats IMHO). Try some Stevie Ray Vaughn, both of these guys great for today. Listen to some Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, so many good artists, not enough space.

  • @haftshar

Totally agree.....all of the above mentioned are amazing, even Joe Bonamassa, seen him in Glasgow a couple of years ago :)

  • @HakumeiHogosha This character played by Samuel Jackson is based on RL Burnside...and it's a strong lineage of Mississippi Delta blues you are lookin for...RL Burnside learned from Mississippi Fred Mcdowell

  • This movie is so fuckin' underrated

  • @MSMETALBABY

  • @mankyller he didnt miss his calling. hes a great actor.

  • Cool cool man, cool cool song! Cool cool film too! A gem that I found by accident!

  • For the film, Jackson spent six or seven hours a day for half a year learning how to play blues guitar for several songs he plays throughout the film

  • mm, gottta love it.. this movie is not-easily-forgotten. right up there in top ten films of all time in my opinion. dont really give a fuck bout anyone who thinks different. lol

  • I love this song so much...Jackson does the blues so damn well.

  • aawesome movie

  • he's not the one playing the guitar though :) But sing it good, he does!!

  • @oliiscoolish it was all prerecordered

  • @oliiscoolish He can't.

  • @iGesOo Actually, he did play this song. He leaned to play just prior to and during the filming of Black Snake Moan.

  • @oliiscoolish Dude, it's Samuel L. Jackson!!

  • @oliiscoolish Is he actually singing? I have not yet seen the movie. Did you like it personally? I just recalled that when this movie was released (2006?) the critics hated it (most I think).

  • @oliiscoolish ,

    He cant play that good,

    ITS R.L. BURNSIDE !

  • Samuel L. Jackson surprisingly did R.L. Burnside proud.

  • I'm fucking always trying to find THAT kind of acostic blues can someone help me!!!

  • it's all about the technique know im a novice myself , but one key thing is the tuning lots of drop and open tunings, also try out a slide...and give yourself a "American Blues" Idol and look at videos of how that play and watch there fingers technique....Check out a guy names "Sam Lightnin Hopkins" send me a message if u need some help

  • Thanks a lot man you found exactly what I was searching for! I really appreciate it!!

  • Hmmm. I'd suggest probably Lightnin' Hopkins or John Lee Hooker. Also look into Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside--the man who originally played this song.

Interesting tidbit: Samuel L.'s backing blues band in this movie was comprised of surviving family memebers from the aforementioned Kimbrough and Burnside families.

  • Yeh man! I went on a blues tour a few years ago, and met his grandson! He lived in a trailor with 3 beautiful daugters nad his wife was lovelly, he's playing the drums in the band.

Also, check out North Mississippi Allstars, they are closely related to RL and he even used to play with them a lot when he was still alive. :)

  • who is RL?

  • @TenyaChigliak RL is a preacher in the movie.

  • @TenyaChigliak RL burnside of course!!

  • man ! what a song, and the movie is great too ! didnt expect samuel to be this cool :-)

  • I agree, amazing that he learned how to play guitar as he was wrapping up on "Snakes on a plane"

  • wasn't that made AFTER black snake moan?
