searched for "ZOG jews" in hopes of finding some sort of moronic anti-jewish stuff to laugh at (ZOG is used by neo-nazis and the like as meaning Zionist Oppressive Government); instead found a little bit of history and learned something new tonight. thank you
I have just discovered this beautiful singer; some of the songs from her album "Almonds and Raisins" are used on the soundtrack of the 2007 film documentary "Yiddish Theatre: A Love Story". Alas, as you say - the cd seems to be no longer available. A great pity - it should surely be re-released. Thank you for posting this beautiful song.
@mierpaul I wouldn't agree with that at all. Both groups have suffered as the Inquisitions and persecutions were not monopolized by Spain. And remember this, at the end of the day Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews are the same ppl.
@mierpaul -- I am of Sefardi descent myself, and Martha Schlamme was my teacher. She was a radical opponent of racist/classist/ethnic/religious descrimination of every kind, and she taught me well. Martha exemplified the best of Ashkenazi culture: she proudly rejected its narrow provincialism, while embracing its particular warmth, beauty and charm from her own personal experience.
@lfceleven -Perhaps look down on themon them, but never on their suffering. It is a form of class distinction and/or financial distinction. This being said-we do not love them any less.
Please allow me to add more thanks to you for this post. I know Schlamme only through an old recording of songs by Kurt Weill -- this is quite different, and she is quite extraordinary.
It's good to hear Martha Schlamme again, and to know she is not forgotten. I saw her perform in Selkirk High School around about 1961, and was most impressed.
My pleasure! It's sad that her CD 'Raisins and Almonds' is now out of print; so many lovely songs there. I'd like to post 'vos villstu' as well but haven't been able to find the lyrics. Can you suggest a source?
TY Candy for sending and the poster for posting.

I love this song.
However, I feel the Ashkenazim look down on the Sefaradim and their sufferings.

This was truly beautiful and took me back a long time. Was there a record of Martha singing songs of Kurt Weil? Thanks for posting this gem.

Thanks for this -- I knew Martha Schlamme when I was a young student, and how magical it is to hear her beautiful, eloquent voice again!

I think they released a CD tiled THE YIDDISH DREAM, with Vanguard label recordings including Jan Peerce and others. One or two
selections by Martha Schlamme were included.
I've not been able to find that CD in most
record shops.

Thanks for your response. Amazon does have a used(?) copy but the price is high - evidently a collector's item! Vos villstu is not included.
