And another thing: to say that NHOP couldn't swing is SO wrong - he practically grew up in a jazz club. Check out the video here on YT where he's playing with the great Bud Powell - at the age of 16! (Anthropology - v=TaSDinL6pC8)
Is it so hard to fathom that you can play jazz if you aren't black? I think that If NHOP were black there wouldn't be any arguing. It's called racism. NHOP makes Ray sound like a sloppy old man.
I was at this concert and remember drinking a beer and chatting with NHOP just after the concert at the Festival's musicians' bar... Great moment ! The giants were on the earth in those days... ;-)
I know, to each is own, but on this clip, to me it's like: "how to play double bass" then "how NOT to play double bass" haha. Gotta listen back to that Night Train cd... it's incredible how when NHOP plays, it just ain't COOKIN. Dude is all about tryna outplay Ray Brown, and lookin at his face you know he ain't confortable AT ALL at the end of his solo. My .02...
@SlikkTim I fully agree with you that ray swings much harder than NHOP, however, i don't think it's at all accurate to describe any video of NHOP playing as "how not to play double bass". as everyone knows, NHOP was a true virtuoso on his instrument, and fantastic musician, as is evidenced by all the recordings and gigs he did with many of the worlds greatest jazz musicians. Also, let's be honest, there are very few bass players ever who would be able to stand next to ray's beat!
To all of you who compare who sounds better, or whose solo is cleaner, or who plays less ghosted notes-who cares??? These guys have more talent in their pinky finger than all of you
I disagree, Ray plays a lot of ghosted notes, with the intenet not for them to get lost, but for some to stick out more, compared to NHOP who plays all notes in his solo around the same volume level. It is my opinion that Ray plays with a little better time then NHOP in his solo and bass line. Also keep in mind Ray comes from the Be-bop period of playing much more with ghosted notes and a different style of phrasing, NHOP is 30 years younger and plays a little more melodically
NHOP gave his usual best. This is the defining moment of a new generation of bass players coming aboard. Listen to the "snap" that Niels generates. No drummer needed. He played into Oscar's solo with deepening harmonics. What swinging!
In later years, he stayed with Oscar even though Mr. Peterson couldn't use his left hand due to his stroke. What class NHOP and Martin Drew showed in continuing to perform and tour with Oscar.
@andifyouhadtwocoats i see your comments everywhere, rab. and i, for one, think you are hilarious. i mean, it is low-brow/neanderthal/homophobic-style humour, but it never stops being funny. good work!
@KennewickMan..Pedersen is a Very melodic Bass player, when I 1st saw him play (with Oscar peterson in the early 70's), That was what I noticed about his playing - along with his fluidity/speed/invention. As an electric bassist who went on to Upright, I can tell you that his bass sounds Nothing like an electric. As far as the action on his bass - Ray can have his action as low or high as he wants. These guys don't play on old wooden boxes. They use the Best.
@slideharp1 Of course both Brown and Pederson were great bass players and I wouldn't pick one over the other. The thing that made Niles somewhat unique is not speed, others such as Christian McBride are as fast, but his heavily syncopated Funky style, while Ray employed a more straight ahead traditional style. I am an electric bassist but went from fretted to fretless. I love the sound of the upright but the size and expense of a good upright is prohibitive for my needs.
have listened to this many many time - and although NHOP has and effortless way of playing and plays beautifully, there is much mote than notes with Rays playing - and it;s his gorgeous musical contribution that goes around in my head.
Man, I'd hate to be Ray after NHØP solos! NHØP's speed isn't what impresses me, it's the fact that, even at that speed, his intonation is great, his technique never falters, and his material is so good! NHØP has never played a note by accident in his life! And I like his tone a lot, it's very distinctive. It does seem to come from the amp a lot, but still, you know Niels' playing immediately upon hearing it, because of tone, but also thanks to his distinctive style and material.
A lot of people are saying Niels is way better than Ray but I completely disagree with that. Ray has better time, better sound, and better solos. Niels can play really fast because his action on his bass is super low; it makes his bass sound like an electric which I don't really like. Also, when you solo it's not all about how fast you can play and show off your chops. A solo should have structure and melody which Ray's solos have. Niels is a great player, but I think Ray is way better.
@KennewickMan00 I wish I could get my electric bass to sound like Niels. It appears that you haven't actually listened to his solos either because they seem to be pretty melodic. Ray & Niels are both giants of the acoustic bass
I think that they both bass players give a great performance, Ray looks to me like he is playing a bit like NHOP, and vice versa..to show respect to one another. Notice NHOP's slurs near the end of his solo, they're very Ray Brown!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I usually hate bass solos because bassists rarely have any sense of melody at all, or they just like to show off....so what a treat this video is to have two of the major exceptions playing together.
@RPB412 Yeah because Charles Mingus, Paul Chambers, Scott La Faro, Ron Carter, Jaco Patorious, etc have no sense of melody. Two of those ive mentioned were among the greatest composers of the 20th century, you clown.
ray brown and Neil play very different, the spped its not what make's a good bassplayer... but there's a lot of people who don't know nothing about jazz ..and imprivization
I cant believe the argument. You guys are arguing apples and oranges. None is better, their styles are completely diferent and thats whats so great and work so well with oscar. U have oscar which plays a lot of notes and when ray solos its a rest, then on the other hand nhop stands side with oscar.
Actually on listening to this video about 10 times: Niels Henning is far superior to Ray Brown. He is on the ball and in tune, which is more than can be said about RB. Because you are black doesn't mean that you are more in tune with Jazz. NHOP has played with the best of them all his life at Montmartre in Copenhagen.
Very nice recording! And good to see Mr. Peterson having some fun!
i disagree, although i think nhop's solos is killin and a little superior to ray brown, browns walking line is uncomparibly better, he adds more variation, and voicings, for example NHOP only does triplets on beats 2 where Ray Brown does them on all beats, its things like that, which make up the difference

Have you seen the youtube where Jaco and Jeff play together? Interesting but not fair to Jaco because he was at the end of his career. Cheers
Ray - much more percussive and seemed to be more based on rhythmic phrases than melodic ones. His style seems to have more in common with the blues tradition
NHOP - Was more concerned with the melodic line he was creating than any specific rhythmic groove. His playing seems more based in his ability to navigate the entire range flawlessly and in sync with his thought.
Very good comparison that I agree with totally. Oscar Peterson said on many occasions that NHOP was the fastest thinking bassplayer he had ever played with. He does have tradition as well (played at Montmatre in Copenhagen since he was 14 or 15 with all the greats)
but what makes him special is the way he 'thinks' music. Listen to his 'Samba petit' for example!
At risk of fueling another futile, but interesting discussion,
I love Niel's but he seems to play the identical runs in every fast swing he plays. His technique is terrifying, but I don't think he has nearly the same connection with jazz that Ray had
I can imagine Oscar Peterson thinkin' : Ok, I have the 2 most badass wicked hardcore bass players here... Which one should I pick for the job ? BOTH !!!
Ray is like a soft couch, you can just sit in there and sail smoothly through soloin'. He's a great soloist too but technically NHOP is a monster. I think he's The master but I do think that without Ray Brown NHOP wouldn't have been the same
By the way, let's not compare the two masters. They differ too much and they both have their own qualities and marvellous sound! Don't forget that there was also a man at the piano...
Not agree with you jazzweston1 ! Niels comes from Ray directly, this is very clear. Listen to his bass walking lines. On this you can hear Ray paying as much as Niels but Ray hated to play very fast. Both were the greatests, each in their own field !!!
One of my favorite NHOP cuts is the one playing with Dexter Gordon (Those Were The Days) in a club with Kenny Drew. He seemed to have a deeper sound then.
There are two kinds of great bass players... Black people, and Danish people...

redhouse7 2 years ago
That is fine - I like that you actually give a reason why you disagree.
I am not sure why you think triplets on all beats is anything special (apart from you liking it obviously)
I am sure NHOP could do this if he thought it appropriate. I think we both agree that he is technically superior to RB ?
Anyway, doesn't matter, what matters is that we both like good musicians - and they both are :-)
