I like to watch trains. I like to get right up next to them as they go by. You know, you can't hear the horn until the train is about 100 yards away and because of the wave compression, you don't hear it anywhere as loud as you might think. Well, the engineers of the Sprinter light rail system in Oceanside, where I live... some of them have to go to therapy because the windshield's so low to the ground and there's not much metal, so you get to listen to the crunching and screeching for x number of feet before you stop. The company gives them 3-month vacations, or somewhere around there, so they can relax and not have anxiety. One guy had to quit, it happened to him 3 times in a row, he just sat there head down hands over his ears

Stupid people are the result of pacified laws. Yeah it is a good idea to have flashing crossing grades with gates, but that is no excuse for peoples intelligence to stop working because a railroad grade crossing has no safety warning devices. It also amazes me of how many motorist will stop at stop signs and proceed with caution at yield signs to prevent a collision with other vehicles, but yet when they approach a railroad crossing, a several thousand ton freight train could do them no harm.

Gates are very expensive. For lesser roads, a crossbuck sign is sufficient. Crossbuck means driver must look and listen for and yield to train. No need to even stop if you can see no train is coming.
No, red lights are NOT enough. No one pays attention to the crossbuck signs, and you and I both know that. I know what the rules and regulations say, but the only time anyone ever does anything about it is when it's too late. So yes, gates are necessary. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather pay the extra money to ensure everyone is safe than have one more idiot have the last thing he sees be the front end of an SD70M-2.

was flashing but I decided to go because
I didn't see anything and then all of a sudden there was a boxcar coming down
on me with only a few feet to spare before
