  • I have another- Never whip or beat a horse if it refuses. It can cause a horse to be afraid or dislike jumping.

  • My riding instructor says using your voice is useless

  • One more not all jumps require you to do something. If you have good pace and your horse needs little adjusting just relax and jump!

  • i have one-don't always try to adjust and fidget. sometimes you need to but other times you just need to wait. especially when you screw up. if you just keep cool the horse can usually save your butt.

  • lol interesting video :') agree with some facts but others are false and some of the pictures arent good representations of the facts!

  • just a thought, but when you are making a help-focused video, try to find GOOD examples of riding. many of those pictures exemplified poor basics and sloppy riding (pic #2,3,4, and 5 to name a few). then of course you had really nice pictures as well...so i guess try not to contradict yourself? it was all solid advice though.

  • you should in fact keep your hands high when going around a course, because when your hands are higher your horses front shoulders will come up so he will put more power into his hind legs, which is where the power comes from when you jump over a fence. but other than that well said :)

  • thanks that helped alot coz i've got a showjumping comp on the weekend! :D

  • great video :) except #3 is in fact false but still great job

  • My horse likes to jump one side of the jump. It scares my trainer cause my leg gets really close to the standard. Anyone have any tips?

  • how high is that horse jumping at 40 seconds

  • i love it when it says at the pictures are by google!!! lolz <3 the tips too :-)

  • you shouldnt always keep your hands low. a good rule that I, and many others follow, is never let your head pass your hands.

  • @sweetriddle101 well said :)

  • @acvideos10 thanks :)

  • #3 ISNT TRUE!!!!!!

  • Gorgeous Appaloosa at 1:51

  • in the keeping your hands low picture is a very poor pictuse coz by doing that u restrain your horse from being able to go forward over the jump the horses head should be able to move out and high if needed not being pulled in by low hands :)

  • @GotToLoveHorses1 agreed

  • lol

  • Your not always supposed to have your hads low, you have to give the horse its mouth so it can jump, but then again your not supposed to give it a free rein either, it should be in the middle.

  • you didn't happen to get this off a magazine did you?

  • my teacher sed to hold the mane if you r not too sure about the jump but i sometimes forget but it still looks nice luckily as jumping is my strongest point

  • 0:46 <3 great pic

  • no! don't put your hands low, give to the horse's mouth so it can stretch nicely over the jump, your legs should be in a nice, strong position to hold your body up! :)

  • how can you have firm and gentle contact with the rein? which one should I do? it's not criticism, just a question. number nine is so true! <3

  • @xxAnnaxxhorsesxx it depends on the horse if it's like my horse and spazzes out if you are too firm with the reins but if your too gentle he'll try to get out of the ring then have your reins in between, not too tight, not too loose. If you have a spectacular horse who listens to everythiing and never misbehaves then have a gentle grip but make sure your reins aren't too loose because you never know what a horse will do next. If you have a horse that never listens but doesn't mind a tight grip..

  • @xxAnnaxxhorsesxx then be firm and make him do what you want (make sure he doesn't get away with bad behavior or he'll do it again)

  • im not gonna subscribe cuz of the song

  • thanks for putting this up! I always enjoy watching vidoes that can help me ride better (: x

  • point 3.. i dont think grabbing mane is gonna help keep in motion.. stand up in your stirrups, and fold from your hips, give slightly with your hands, sit back on landing:)..thats what i would say:)

  • 0:23 she's actually pulling on the horse's mouth, causing him a lot of discomfort and forcing him to jump awkwardly. You need to release: slide your hands half-way up the horses neck over the jump.(0:48 is a good example of a good crest release.)

  • @4TheLoveOfPoniesX I mean 0:47 is a good example of a crest release.

  • 00:38 was freakin awesome/amazing! :0

  • i am quite new at horse riding nd i was okay at jumping but these tip have helped me inprove

  • There use to be a sign in the bathroom of an old riding stables i used to go to that said ,"Dont' look at your horse's ears; they won't fall off!"

  • 0:48 is the picture for that video game 'Riding Champion: Legacy of Rosemond Hill's cover XD My life is made *-*

  • This really helped- I subbed. I've done beginner jumping many times, never really got into all that much- but I'm trying to get my rescue QH used to poles just to give him something different, and this really informed me! Thanks for posting.

  • thank u sooooo mutch 4 makeing this!!! i have only had a ew lessions on jumping and i wasnt told all this stuff.:'( this helped me soo mutch tht i had to subscribe! thanx again!!:) ~Rebekah, Storm &Rebel~ :) ps Rebel & Storm r my horses!!! thanx!:) xxxxxxxxxxoooooooo<3<3:)

  • Thanks... this is a gr8 video...it helped me a lot!!!!!!!

  • this is a good video if you don't already ave a coach who has taught you this already...

  • hands low is wrong, hands should be UP so you dont grab your horse in the mouth, hands should be about halfway up the neck

  • @GirlWithAGuitarx Ummm...Noo. You have to have your hands up before the jump. she was talking about having your hands on the neck when going over the jump. and stretch out your arms so you don't snap your hrose in the mouth.

  • what song is this?

  • number 9 , so so ture ! that helped alot thanks :)

  • I have another one- keep your shoulders back when approaching the jump and don't lean forward until your horse jumps. Otherwise, if you're leaning forward and your horse decides to refuse the jumps, you'll be more likely to fall off than if you are keeping your shoulders back. xD

  • @hunterjumper1351

Yes, absolutely. Leaning forward too soon is a good recipe for you flying over the jump if the horse stops!

  • Nuber 3 is wrong, your hands are supposed to be further up the horses neck, and to get a succesful jump you should always have contact with your horse's mouth, but you are not supposed to pull.

  • I have that picture at 2:35

  • if you have trouble with balance, you shouldn't be jumping.

  • yo thanks for this vid im a intermediate jumper trying to train a green horse to jump that hasent been riden in a couple of months

  • what the name of the song?!?!?!!?!?!?!?

  • 0:23 IS WRONG! DON'T keep your hands down you will catch the horse in the mouth your supposed to reach for thier ears and REALEASE!

  • @horsefreak0 I suppose cross-rail jumps can be used for that, but there are also many other reasons. Sometimes, it can be used to encourage a horse that's new at jumping that a jump isn't scary at all! (It can encourage the rider too) If you have a bigger horse, space your trotting poles farther apart. Opposite for a pony. (Just try different things) As for flatwork, just make sure you and your horse know each other well enough. I hope this comment helped!

  • I'm extremely new to jumping and this is really helpful! I have a couple of questions, please excuse my clueless-ness! So are the cross jumps used to encourage jumping towards the middle? Also how do you know how to use the trotting poles, are they different for each horse or the experience of the horse, etc? Also is there any basic flatwork I need to teach myself or the horses before beginning jumping? I haven't got my saddle yet, but I want to be sure I know somewhat what to do when I get it(:

  • my pony has a hogged mane :L

  • i wish i could hold my ponys mane...but she dosent really have one

  • yeah 9 is true at my stables they got 3 girls from a stables that had to close down and whenever they got to a show they would get scared cause they didn't even know diaginals or how to control the horse and they were jumping 4 feet.

  • Whats the song called?

  • thanks

  • Totally for 11!! I had to do that at my show! :D

  • thanks for these! cant wait to try them

  • thx this video helped me a lot

  • I like the tips!!!

  • ok, i am having this problem with jumping that i just cant seem to fix. when i twopoint on the flat, i can do it just fine, close to perfect. But when i go to jump, i have issues with keeping my heels where they should be; i dont keep them down far enough. ive been working on this for the past few weeks in my weekly lesson, but it is a reoccuring problem. Any advice?

  • @lluckydduck you could allways try walking the jump and moving up from that and u could get in ur 2piont befor the jump remeber always look ahead and think about ur heels when u jump

  • @lluckydduck im no instructor or anything so this is just a suggestion, build up the muscles in your calves and practise getting in and out of it. one way of doing this is when warming up, instead of doing normal rising trot, practise doing 3 up, one down and other variations on that. you can also practise on the stairs by keeping half your foot on the stair and raising your weight up and down. alternatively it may be that your legs are too far back and your weight is forward.

  • never underestimate the power of shortening your stirrups, i had a horse that continually refused to jump. I only shortened my stirrups two holes to jump.

One day i shortened it four holes and instantly my position was better and my leg didn;t slip around and my horse jumped better.

Seirously, the shorter the better in my eyes.

  • Nice video well done:)

  • 0:39...WOW!

  • Fact 20 isn't true. You might be able to holler all you want in the Show jumping ring, but you have to shush up in the hunter ring(including equitation, but what would I know, i'm a hunter!). So you must be good with your leg signals, I think riders depend to much on their voice.

  • Why the filthy, white-trash accompanying rap music?

  • Question 3,,when the hight does go up..shouldnt you give with your hands to let the horse streach its neck?...

  • @AlannaAndLampie in theory one should be balanced enough to do a auto release, allowing the hand to follow the bit or mane release. But no, you dont need to be grabbing ears over the 5 footers, even though you will see if in the GP ring.

  • @GoGadgetHookerClean

i wasnt talking about "grabbing the ears" as you may call it?..i was just saying..move your hands slightlyforward?

  • @AlannaAndLampie Then yes, but a straight line from elbow to bit should be maintained. I also liked the auto release myself. It allows for freedom of movement and furthers the understanding of the contact via bit.

  • Also, keep your heels DOWN, if they come up, then you might fall out of the saddle on landing.

  • I think its a shame you wear spurs but your veryy good at jumping! x

  • I agree with ThePigeon08, and I have one more tip, if you jump, try to have someone on the ground (that knows what they're doing) watching you at least once a week. You might be slipping into bad habit without knowing you are. Good video though.

  • im pretty sure you have to look over your shoulders sometimes during jumps, this helps your horse land on the correct lead, like if you were doing a rollback

  • @EquestrianAdrenaline

no, if your look at the ground you will have a hard time getting on the next obstacle right... don't worry about landing!! :)

  • @evapleska i didnt mean at the ground lol i guess my point is more if your doing jumpers and such and want a quicker time :)

  • @EquestrianAdrenaline

ohh haha i waz really confused there i was like why would you look at the floor O.o

  • @evapleska bahaha xD

  • Looking over your shoulder is not going to make the horses job harder. I would think it would be opposite. Some horses get leads when you look in the direction of your next jump in the air, so then they dont have to go through the trouble of doing a flying lead change .

  • What if it is a 70cm wide jump (VERY HARD TO JUMP) what do you do? I know the answer.

It just didnt say in the tips.

  • Number 9 is so true!! i know so many rider's who think height is everything and are jumping really high when they havn't even got their position sorted yet. =)

  • you would be suprised how much looking ahead insted of down helps.

  • @westernrider46 well people told me to but things under it so it looks full(you know flower pots etc) and some told me to do very samll ones and work back up, or do it in the round pen so they have to push to go over it :) hope this helps you..

  • 0:23 exacly not what to do. she has her eyes down her hands back and not grabbing mane

  • @grayponylove AGREED!!

  • you forgot to add:

    "give a release"

even though you already kind of had that and also:

"just because you're going fast doesn't mean your horse is taking you"

    and

"keep your leg on no matter what"

  • i need some help, me and my horse have been jumping for a while and she REFUSES literally will not and cannot jump a verticle, its like she doesnt see it but she jumps oxers and anything else you through at her,,.. any tips?

  • @Jessiealana I have the same problem. Any advice from anybody yet?

  • 0:37 HOLY FUCK THAT'S HIGH!

It's like at the little x: My grandma could jump that.. -.-

The rail over that: That's better. :/

Over that: Ok, now we're talking! :D

    Over that: I don't know.. o.o

Over that: Now I'm not jumping that!! :O

    Over that: O.O *FAINT*

  • lol i love the song for a horse tip video .

  • great video it helped alot

  • when jumping youpush your hands to the ears.

  • @FanGlambert hahaha nahhh and i mean like one or two just to feel your horses movement lol and i can't believe we have had this long of a conversation on here hahaha

  • @FanGlambert oh well guess we all learn something new lol i never knew they get dizzy from that and do they get dizzy even if you do like a circle that covers like the whole end of the arena? sorry im just curious cuz thats how my instructor gets some ppl to do stuff :p

  • @FanGlambert sorry i didn't really mean in a show scenario i meant more when your working out the problems and i mean like a big circle before you attempt the jump not just a small one in front of the jump but ya i was not thinking in a show i meant when your working with your horse at home sorry i didn't specify :P

  • It really does help!!!!! Except for the whole hands thing. Your hands should go with the horse while jumping!

  • @jewels5192 crest relese x

  • the only thing i would disagree with is keeping your hands low, your hands should be forward, going with the horses mouth apart from that i like the video :)

  • hahaha I totally agree and do the last one in all my jump rounds! My boy loves it when I talk to him, and he gets super pumped when I speak loudly and excitedly. lol I even sing out loud to help maintain a rhythm! last yr, my friend and I went to the USPC national champs for SJ and during our round yelled "Awesome Possum!" over the same jump! Don't ask why, but our horses loved it ♥

  • i can never jump hello disabled!

  • #8 and #18 contradict themselves. How am I supposed to be looking at the next jump if I can't turn my head? When I'm jumping I turn my head to look at the next jump while I'm in the air. It doesn't make my horse's job any harder and it helps him to "feel" which direction I want him to go in when he lands just by that slight change in movement.

  • @brooklyn1311 u should turn ur so u can see it like if u have to make a sharp turn like if u have to turn left think left and put slight preasure on the left rein so the horse knows which way to go before he/she lands!!!!

  • that last one isnt really correct because i have been to man comps where people have been told off for yelling to loud at the horse in the ring.

  • Cool :) Thanks for the tips :) !!!

  • whats the song? <3

  • thank you very much!<3...

  • Don't over jump. For a small jump you don't need to be on their neck the same way you might over a huge oxer. That can get them overly excited.

  • it helped soooo much !!

    Thank youuu !

  • i have 3 bad habbits for jumping im not very good at jumping i just started doing courses ok so my 1st bad habbit.i always shorten my reins right befor the jump! y and how can i stop this my 2nd bad habbit. i never used to look down but now i do how can i stop that? my third bad habbit. i get in 2 point to early like usually just trotting thim i get in 2 point to early y at the trot i dont do it at the canter!?

  • @horselover99100 ur 1st and 2nd point seem to me as if u weren't trusting ur horse entirely or as if u were a lil scary of the jump. best is u ask ur instructor how to improve ur jumping or to jump a lil lower first so u feel secure (:

  • @Skattla89 well i kind of was un sure to do it cuz this week she actually haired the jump so i was trying to make it look like my horse was refusing then she went and canterd it so it was to late to stop her and i felt fine but when i go in to point to early its only at the trot not the canter but i look down instead of ahead and this time i just didnt even look at the jump so i didnt know when she was gonna take off and i went in 2 point at the perfect time=-)

  • @horselover99100 ^^ I'm sure it'll get better from week to week. And as a former instructor of mine used to say: Everytime ur facing a jump, let ur heart go ahead of u ^^ I don't see the point in acting as if ur horse would refuse. It's bad enough if she really refuses! If u don't feel comfortable with anything, tell ur instructor. I mean, jumping should be fun, and ur instructor is there to help u (:

  • @Skattla89 haha i know! im actually doing much better i did day camp wher u just have a lesson every day *and* bareback lessons of course i was on the hardest bumpest horse i havnt rode in a while and boy did it help me loads=)_

  • @horselover99100 kewl!^^

  • @Skattla89 =-)

  • @horselover99100 okayy my advice, if you still need it lol i realize this is old :P it's not necessarily a bad thing to shorten your reins it all depends on the horse as long as your not pulling on their mouth when they are jumping becuase that can cause a refusal. try doing a few circles before your jump so you feel completely comfortable with your horses motion before the jump. 2. I look ahead of my jump at least 2-3 strides before the jump and just keep looking at the

  • exact same spot until the jump is done it seems odd at first but it becomes a habit if you force yourself to do it I was always told look where you want to go if you look down you will quite possibly go there lol. and 3 I think it is pretty normal to have a better jump at a canter I know i prefer it big time, I find it much easier to feel when the horse is going to jump if they are cantering the biggest thing that will help with all three problems but this in particular is practice,

  • it's trusting your horse and your skills so don't underestimate your ability :)

  • the only thing I would say is make the words last longer I had to pause the video so I could read it all

  • @ThePigeon08 Then read faster.

  • @o0Affinity0o It was a suggestion you bitch god you dont have to be sny about it and on top of that I wasn't evan talking to you

  • @ThePigeon08 same

  • i love this, but there are alot of the tips are just the same but a different way.

  • whats this song

  • thank you so much!!

  • its a good video and the points are good but all the pictures were pretty much the same...it may be more helpful to people who are beginning to jump to see pictures of the wrong and right way about doing the jumps. might be more helpful, only saying but still decent video like

  • Perfect, Wait till my instructor see's me after this!! :) THANK YOU!!

  • omg u no the thing about jumping high doesnt always mean a good rider

i tell that to everyone down my stable cause theres a wee girl and she jumps really high but she does it with bad poistioning and over confidence and every time i tell someone they look at me like i have two heads and say that im just jealous that she can jump at bit higher than me

  • Iwhat helps me, is to think about keeping your hips back. It helps, especially when you are beginning.

  • Wow. i havent started jumpin yet, i loan at 15hh and he is a delight, although in the feild he is a right ol devil !! As you know so much about jumping u must have the horse to start so could you maybe make a video about how to catch a horse in a huge field full of horses !!

    Thanx

  • @handsoffmysaddle lol, my horse is the same way =p If you don't talk to her, she won't bother to go over it. Dressage is horrid for us because I can't talk to her... all well.

  • i always speak to my horse when i ride, it encourages them forwards and slows them down and everything, its a great habit

  • 'make sure you shorted your stirrups' errr no!

people rie difo lenths! i saw on show jumping this man with dressage lenth stirrups and he won over all! people ride difo to everyone else... when i jump i put my hands up

  • you did a really nice job with the tips

  • I really like this video good job on the tips i have been looking at other tips viseos and yours is by far the best lol again AWESOME JOB

  • good tips i will try them when im riding <3

but umm i thing to improve is to slow down the video :P

not to be mean and i loved it btw

  • Very good tips. The best one, you never hear about because 90% of the instructors want to jump to high quickly is, practicing over Ground Pols for a fix position and to feel the movement. When you are able to calculate the distance to the ground poll and your position is fixed. I mean by that that you let the horse pivit under you, everything will be allright after you practice many time ground polls . Compliments for the video.

  • @resurractionkt - about the instructor bit... they cant make you do anything you dont want to do! last year i hated doing bigger then 1ft and she used to put it down for me ! my old instrucotor is the best one going ...

  • @ChloeLovesPonies In practice it is diffirent. Alot of instructors, not all, want to have you as soon as possible on competition because they earn money because of that. It is not an obligation to jump. When you do it on your own speed everything will be allright.

  • i love a showjumping. but this sport very difficile. I don't now when need give occasion. this is difficile!!

  • i love relying on the horse's mane while going over the jump..it makes me feel more comfortable and its a way better way of keeping your balance than pulling on the horses mouth and using the reins.

  • ok so i relized one day when i was riding if u jump then like try to sit the canter its like hard for some reason isnt that weird or is it just me

  • @pecoslover97 maybe it's because your stirrups are shorter than normal? I find it more difficult and uncomfortable when trying to sit in a canter with shorter stirrups.

  • Comment removed

  • You do not keep your hands down wulst jumping before the jump yes but not over the jump u need to give with the reins over the jump

  • @BestGirl99x but you dont want your hand up high either - just forward a little :)

  • @BestGirl99x yeah but u dont throw ur hands on the horses neck as i have seen .

  • the problem with keeping your hands low can make you kind of 'climb' up their neck and stop riding 3 strides out causing the horse to stop or just rest your hands on their neck and not worry about striding and end up taking a very long 'hospital stride'.

and also i think you should have put something about lower leg positions which i think in general are slipping.

but apart from that dead good tips tbf.

  • Comment removed

  • um ok so in my earlier vids i like hunch which idk if i do now but later on in that day in like may we worked on me hunching cuz i was but now like i said its like to quick or something its weird PEASE HELP ME ANYONE CAN THAT GOES TO THIS PAGE

  • PS. At 1:26 thats at the barn i ride at :D

  • You should NEVER keep your hands low over a jump. that bobts the horse in the mouth and teaches them that jumping is bad. Release half way up the neck and THEN grab mane

  • i havea q uestion this isnt in ur vid ike this isnt a tip on here but i notice that I dont go in half seat long enough or something it looks weird check out my jump vids please help me

  • brill! this vid is soooooo gona help me! = )

  • those are amazing tips, thank you so much!!!! :D

  • 0:41 santander? lol

  • OMG #11 is so genius! i never thought of that before! thank you!

  • thank you :)

  • thanks!!! ive been having alot of trouble lately, and i think it might be because my old barn used to have us practice 2 point at all gaits, and this video reminded me of that!

  • THANKS I GOT A JUMPING COMP ON 5TH AUGUST AND THIS HELPED! WISH ME LUCK, X

  • Thanks! - helpful video. I dont have my own horse yet so I cant practice everyday with the small x-rails or groundpoles... I know how to jump and get it right, but its sometimes hard just to pull everything together.

  • Thanks. Lately I have been having trouble but i think they will help me! Thanks xxx

  • you dont want yourhands low... you want them up and in front of your body
