"Does he take her pulse? Does he get a doctor? Does he make sure? No. Kills himself. The illusion fools him because he does not care about her; he only cares about himself. If I had been Romeo, we would have got away,"
Damn. That is some DEEP stuff right there. As a playwright myself, I must say, bravo, bravo to the writer. Amazing. And great acting from Bowie. Until now, I'd only seen him as the wacky goblin king in "Labyrinth". :p
Bernard Pomerance's The Elephant Man: A Play was, in the humble opinion of this theater aesthete, well deserved of its Pulitzer Prize in Drama. The way in which Pomerance denudes the play's eponymous anti-hero of his would-be proper monstrosity and, in turn, portrays the carnival of characters surrounding John Merrick as truly freakish & fiendishly grotesque is an exemplary captivating use of dramatic paradox & foil.
The real genius of this masterpiece of contemporary theater is portrayed on stage by a young David Bowie, who infuses his interpretation of John Merrick with "Le Corps Poetique," learned as a student of the Decroux School of classical mime or else of the Lecoq School of corporeal theater. Bowie contorts his beautiful body into painfully exquisite shapes & movements and accentuates the pitch, timbre & tonality of his voice, in an effort to capture the true beauty of "THE FREAK!"
K its called make up, I do not believe this man is truly playong the character of Mr Josehp Merrick. they can make fake growth on him using make up!!!!
the writer was very adamant in stating that there should be no attempt made to replicate John Merrick's deformities. They should be suggested only by the actors manipulation of his body.
I think that it means that if he cared he would have made absolutly sure she was dead and would have called a doctor. Because he doesn't care, he doesn't really care to check and kills himself instantly.
@TheBookWorm1718 I thought about that myself. I guess that he meant that Romeo wanted Juliets beauty and being in his life, because he needed her to make him feel good about something in life. Without her, he wouldnt have anything to live for. In other words, he immediately figured that HE had lost HER. The elephant man thinks that if he really loved her, he would have done everything in his power to bring her back. But he was just pitying himself, and forgot any other option.
@AndersHansen1988 That makes sense I suppose, but it's definitely an unpopular opinion, everyone else thinks they killed themselves because they did love each other.
What I really don't understand is,that he doesn't like acting,he thinks it's boring!
How can you give such a splendid performance than? He's got so much talent, but the last 6 years didn't do anything with it,and at 63 still nothing new.
He hasn't done anything big since 2004 except a few TV shows, because he had a heart attack during his Reality tour. He can't really do anything like that anymore. Although I wish he would tour at least once more...
I do agree with the acting thing. He says he loathes acting but anything I've seen him act in has been phenomenal.
@LadyBowie1119 it just came to mind,Bowie learned a lot of Lindsay Kemp-see youtube-LK Victoria-he used it in the elephant man !But,in films David has a problem with showing/acting emotions,he acts very stiff,it shows in just a gigolo and Merry x mass mr . Lawrence, the part with his brother is just awful, stiff as a board. But his good looks saves him.In later years smaller but stronger parts, age+experience I guess.BTW Robert Fripp visited DB,19-10-11DB+Eno r composing new music he said on RF site
You know, watching this has made me see Romeo and Julliette in a new light lol. But he did a very good job as Joseph Merrick. :). Wish I had been able to see the play
@BigMamaFurter Why would he check her pulse if he saw her in a tomb why would he fetch a docter if she was in a tomb. if anything that falls on the famiys' part they should have went through all that trouble to make sure she was still alive. i see where he was coming from though :]
What a great clip from Elephant Man. This is a favorite play of mine; I've worked on it once. As someone who works in the theatre and is a HUGE fan of Bowie, I just wish I could find a full video of the play.
A really revealing interview. It makes all the difference when he's with a good host coz it just brings out the best comments from David. Thanks for posting!
I've done this play before, I can repeat word for word :P

The only thing I don't get about that is why would Romeo kill himself when he thought Juliet was dead if he didn't care about her?

I've never actually thought of Romeo and Juliet that way. That he 'does not care' about her, at the end.
Does he check her pulse? No. Does he fetch a doctor? No. The illusion fools him, so he kills himself.
"If I had been Romeo . . .We would've got away . . ." (Well done, David!)
BigMamaFurter 2 years ago 40
well I could be wrong, but doesn't the potion she drinks make it so that she has no pulse?
