I new to Linux and looks like you are like a professional... When I go to forum I don't get anything, I don't understand any of that stuff. Can you do a tutorial teaching basic, useful Commands for Linux. I use Fedora 15, I don't know if the commands are the same for every linux distro but, can you please do one tutorial like that? Please???
@popflickcatchland as long as you don't completely wipe out the XP installation, you should be able to access the files, but you probably won't be able to run the applications. Linux does things differently than Windows. There may be alternatives to the applications you want to use, or if they're open source, there may be native versions (like Firefox).
can you help me? every time i try to load up linux from a cd it brings up a "can not moun/dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on // filesystem.squashfs" error. what do i do? make a new cd?
@AfterShockPivot is it possible there are alternative applications, or is it something like a game that you can't get running? perhaps there are tweaks on winehq.org?
@thisweekinlinux I can't get Gang Garrison 2 to work, I checked the Application Database and found the same problems I've had. Also I can't get Steam to work, I installed it with PlayOnLinux and every time I try to open Steam it's so slow I can't even type or move windows.
funny, i keep trying to download the software from the site and the windows download keeps stopping, lol or it will stop and say download finished before the entire file is done.
@NolaMushr00m If you do the install and tell it to wipe out your existing system (a full switch), yes. You will want to make a backup of your files before doing anything.
@FlyingAce1016 And again, the blame is placed in the wrong area. If there's an application you enjoy that doesn't work on Linux, it has nothing to do with Linux. It has everything to do with the software developers refusing to port it to Linux.
The "free knockoff apps" you refer to are generally either community created and supported alternatives, or commercial alternatives.
You would be surprised how impressive some of these "knockoff apps" are. Gimp is far superior to MS Paint. Open Office provides all of the functionality you have come to expect from MS Office. Can you please tell me if I can install drivers in it? Specially if they're are Windows adapted drivers such as my USB Wireless Card driver, printer, webcam drivers and so..
And most important, does ubuntu upgrades itself when the new version releases or do I have to install it all again?
@nellzom You generally don't install drivers in the same way on Ubuntu. Depending on the chip that's inside of your USB wireless card, it might be supported out of the box, or it might take some configuration. A lot of printers are supported out of the box, but it's possible to install new drivers, and most webcams are supported out of the box.
When a new version comes out, you have the option to upgrade using the Update manager, or you can reinstall if you want to.
@sd9800 It seems touchcal is an abandoned project (from their sourceforge page) "This software is only 'loosely maintained' - I fixed it up to work with my

Hey mate. Nice job with your vids. I just want to know how I can Install Linux on my computer. I currently have Windows 7 and my CPU is an Intel 6400 (it sucks) and 2 GB Ram. Could you help me? I want instructions on how to get it, install it and what to do afterwards. Thanks for your time.
hey man i have a problem. I installed ubuntu netbook on my netbook on the same partition with the windows. now i want to uninstall it,but i cant find it on my windows partition and i cant figure out how can i uninstall ubuntu without having to reinstall windows again! please, i need some help!
@ionutbreana so you didn't do the Wubi install? I made a video a few months back in my "Intro to Linux" series where I talked about removing Ubuntu and going back to Windows. You just need your Windows install media (CD or USB, since you're on a netbook, I'd assume USB).
ok, I'm sure its supported because I have run it from a live cd. I was more concerned about the fact that if I upgrade distribution it will get slower... I mean this laptop came with a win xp but I'm sure I cannot run win7 nowadays.
Do you think It can happen the same with Linux? Running it from live cd gets a little slower
@masalcedo1 it's possible that it might be a little slower. Newer releases generally try to take advantage of newer hardware, but it's entirely possible to strip down what's running to keep things fast. For example, disabling Compiz might help keep things speedy.
The laptop amilo pa1510 came with a broadcom wifi card but I replaced it with an external smc usbg attached to a yagui pringles anthenna :D My house is made of brick walls and concrete floors and it has to reach the reuter. With that I got in jaunty up to 95% of connection while with the laptop's it barely got to 35% and was dropped so many times, I think because near me I got other 4-5 wifi nets so I got too many noise too.
@masalcedo1 I'm not sure what chip that one has in it, but the odds are pretty good that you can get it working in Ubuntu 10.10. If you're on Ubuntu already, you can go to the terminal and type "lspci", and it should show you a list of connected USB devices. One of those should be the wireless card, and you can search to see if that model is supported.
HI, I would like to ask you if you think ubuntu 10.10 compatible with a pc 1.60 and 1.8 Gb of Ram.
I have already installed ubuntu jaunty and works great, the thing is that I tried to upgrade it to karmic and it didnt go so well the wifi, but days ago I received a note from upgrade manager stating that I will no longer receive securtity updates and that I should update.
@masalcedo1 it's definitely worth a shot. 1.8gb of ram should definitely be enough, and the processor sounds fine. What sort of wireless are you using?
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat is impressive. But I will stick on Lucid Lynx since Lucid Lynx is LTS, Maverick Meerkat isn't LTS.
So, this release will be the last release of Ubuntu on the GNOME Shell eh, they say 11.04 will use Unity Desktop Environment (used on the latest Ubuntu Netbook Edition) as its default Desktop Environment. Sad news, I love GNOME.
@Addinkuu You can indeed, yes. It's always best to make sure your hardware is all compatible, but yes, Ubuntu can indeed be the main and only OS on a system.
i have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. if i go to this version of ubuntu will it be faster and will my windows based games work with this? also when i install this can i keep everything on the computer with out iinstalling everything again?
@DARTHZANRUIT When you install Ubuntu (or any Linux) you have the option to resize your existing system and put Linux alongside it, or you can wipe everything out (which would remove all of your data) and install it.
As far as your windows-based software, you'd want to check WineHQ's AppDB to see if they work, or look for free/open source alternatives.
My D drive where I'm going to install Ubuntu has 91 Gb free space. I was just wondering is it wise to give the installation like 90 Gb or leave it to 17 Gb?
@yoyoisrap it does work without internet access, and generally it doesn't have anything to do with Windows. You CAN install it inside of Windows, but the traditional installation involves resizing your Windows partition (or removing it entirely) and installing Ubuntu as well.
Other than lack of support and dull apps in the ubuntu software centre, Im totaly loving Ubuntu, its Soo much faster and stable than windows, I dont think its ever crashed once.
All it needs now is for some Major game devlopers to give it some support.
@thisweekinlinux its just a misunderstanding, by lack of support I ment Ubuntu being supported by hardware manufacturer and software developers. Not the support that Ubuntu provides which is fine.
@Danster82 oh, sorry about that. Agreed there about hardware and software support. Mainly it's just companies that don't realize that Linux is a viable platform, so they don't bother to port their code (or code it in a way that's cross-platform compatible)
@meska961 Again, they're downloadable, and it's entirely possible that they could work using Wine (Wine is a program that attempts to let you run Windows-only software on Linux), but it has nothing to do with Ubuntu (or Linux in general).
Lots of game developers just refuse to make their games work on Linux.
@meska961 I've got quite a few games on Linux. However, I assume you're talking about Windows games. The ones I've really wanted to play, I run through Wine, and if they just won't run in Linux, it has nothing to do with Linux, it's because the game devs aren't supporting Linux...
All the computers we refurbish I put Ubuntu 10.10 on them. After wiping the drive of all data I image the computer with a really slick Windows-7 theme. I call it the LYN-WIN-7.
I have all the programs people would love to use, video editors, music editors, open office, skype, picasa, google earth. Those guys working with Ubuntu are going to make MS run for it's money. I can't wait for a year or so down the road to see what they are coming out with.
i would use ubuntu if it was possible to play all games and use my hardwares capabilities to its max... the style and freedom<3. but since i game sometime it just wont work for me? or is it anyway? Wine dont seem good tbh
@Necry3d to each his own, as usual. I have had hardware issues, and I choose to upgrade my hardware to things that work better with Linux (intel wireless, nvidia graphics).
The games I traditionally play are either Linux native, or play well in Wine. Steam-based games play pretty well for me.
@thisweekinlinux well i play for example, Age of Conan, Eve Online, Bad Company 2 through steam , Civilization 5 ... would be nice if it was a way to make all directx version to work under wine so i can play any game.. but i guess microsoft blocks that. i wish all game devs made games in OpenGL instead . gonna try ubuntu agian now with the inside windows with the Wubu
@Necry3d there are developers working on porting DirectX (somehow) to Linux. They supposedly have Direct3D versions 10 and 11 working already, and they say it's a simple matter to make it work in Wine.
@thisweekinlinux oh that sounds realy nice. hope it will happen sometime soon within a year or so. would defently start using Ubuntu fulltime then. thats the reason i always left ubuntu becaus lack of it for my gaming. u happen to know if it exist any MSN software for ubuntu that are able to use cams & mic ? didt find any at the time when i used ubuntu
@Necry3d I've actually heard recently that MSN-based software has been having issues on Linux recently, most likely due to some change MS made, but I'm not sure. Empathy and Pidgin are two clients that would be most likely to work, though Emesene and aMSN are supposed to be the best, I think.
I've always wanted to switch to Ubuntu, however, I'm worried about bumping into in-compatability. Windows is compatible with everything, so there's no issue there, but I've been wanting to hop into Ubuntu. How often do you Ubuntu users bump into in-compatability, both on games and software.
I don't do major gaming, but I do some gaming, and software, I use it a lot.
@OverUniverse honestly, it depends on what you're doing, and how flexible you can be. If you absolutely HAVE to have program X on Ubuntu, check to see if there's a Linux version, or check the Wine AppDB. If it looks like it will work, give Ubuntu a shot.
If it doesn't and you just can't live without that program/app/game, don't switch. I don't know how many people have switched to Ubuntu, found out something doesn't work the same way, and left, exclaiming that Linux sucks. :P
@thisweekinlinux Well I'm not very flexible, I have programs and games that I need to have, and they don't have a linux version. A lot of software I bought. For example, Fraps, it's only for windows. And there are several other programs and games that I'm worried won't be either.
@OverUniverse The closest thing I know of to Fraps on Linux is called GLC, and it's only for openGL-based games. LIke I said, if you absolutely have to have a certain set of software, and there aren't alternatives that suit your needs or if they won't run in Wine, I would definitely not recommend a switch.
@TeruMikami2345 it looks like that has the Intel 3100 graphics. perhaps it has to do with the 3d performance of that card? I know the unity interface (the netbook interface) is a bit demanding.
i tried to update to 10.04 when that came out but when i started up it said "ubuntu" and the screen went black. then nothing. im going to try 10.10 but am wondering what to do if it happens again.
its the same like 10.04.I have 10.04 Notebook edition on my Laptop and i wait till Microsoft will create a so cool Microsoft windows.I have so the Microsoft Windows 8 tutorial and its so Complicated. So long i have a laptop for Linux OS testing.
@MrDave2080 really? I like the idea, as long as they don't turn all the free apps into paid ones... if you could pay to get a fully functional version of a Windows or Mac-only app on Linux, wouldn't you? (assuming there wasn't a free/open source alternative that was just as good or better)
@FKSTAR7 medibuntu. org has a whole page of instructions to add their repository and install codecs (specifically, w32codecs or w64codecs, depending on if you're on 32-bit or 64-bit)
ive installed windows 7 ultimate in my virtual box it works fine but when i try to install the drivers for the wireless, graphics and sound card it wont work? Anyone had this problem before?
The installation and removal history is so awesome. Sometimes I just wish I knew what I installed so I can remove it when I no longer need it (I'm a software developer so..). I have to keep my history in regular text files. :/
ok i installed ubuntu netbook to my lapto and sum stuff went error and i have to click "delete something at the begining and then sum upadates fail.. so i wanna know if can isnatall ubuntu desktop to my laptop??
@Musketeerable yes, you can definitely use the desktop edition on a laptop (even on a netbook, if you're so inclined). The main difference between the netbook and desktop editions is the look and feel. The netbook edition interface is supposed to be lighter and more suited for small screens, but the desktop edition works decently.
@70rm3n70r I would hope so. I haven't actually tried 10.10 on physical hardware yet, so I haven't had a chance to see the difference. As far as virtual, it seems to be a little faster, but it's hard to really measure differences that way.
@johnsaby One very EASY way to try out Linux without leaving Windows is to install WUBI and it installs a working version of Ubuntu Linux that installs into your Windows OS just like any other program. You don't have to change anything. If you don't like it, just uninstall WUBI like any other Windows program. That's how I got started. 1 year later I'm using Linux like a pro.
@johnsaby Ask someone's help to install Ubuntu in dualboot at your pc and you will be happy ;) Or follow one of the hundreds of tutorials that there is at youtube
Didn't know about "This Week in Linux" and as I am just getting involved in Linux at ARC, I can see this is going to be a good resource for me to use in keeping track of Linux developments. Thanks!
@cakelover33 There might be a Function key combination that enables / disables the touchpad, or a button near the touchpad that can turn it on/off. What model do you have?
@thisweekinlinux my pc said there was a diver problem so i reinstalled all the driver software but it still would not work. i have 10.10 now and i have not tried booting windows yet

I installed ubuntu netbook on my netbook on the same partition with the windows. now i want to uninstall it,but i cant find it on my windows partition and i cant figure out how can i uninstall ubuntu without having to reinstall windows again! please, i need some help!
ionutbreana 1 year ago
@ionutbreana so you didn't do the Wubi install? I made a video a few months back in my "Intro to Linux" series where I talked about removing Ubuntu and going back to Windows. You just need your Windows install media (CD or USB, since you're on a netbook, I'd assume USB).
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
ok, I'm sure its supported because I have run it from a live cd. I was more concerned about the fact that if I upgrade distribution it will get slower... I mean this laptop came with a win xp but I'm sure I cannot run win7 nowadays.
Do you think It can happen the same with Linux? Running it from live cd gets a little slower
thanks man, cheers from Spain
masalcedo1 1 year ago
@masalcedo1 it's possible that it might be a little slower. Newer releases generally try to take advantage of newer hardware, but it's entirely possible to strip down what's running to keep things fast. For example, disabling Compiz might help keep things speedy.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
thanks for answering so fast!!
Thanks man
masalcedo1 1 year ago
@masalcedo1 I'm not sure what chip that one has in it, but the odds are pretty good that you can get it working in Ubuntu 10.10. If you're on Ubuntu already, you can go to the terminal and type "lspci", and it should show you a list of connected USB devices. One of those should be the wireless card, and you can search to see if that model is supported.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
HI, I would like to ask you if you think ubuntu 10.10 compatible with a pc 1.60 and 1.8 Gb of Ram.
I have already installed ubuntu jaunty and works great, the thing is that I tried to upgrade it to karmic and it didnt go so well the wifi, but days ago I received a note from upgrade manager stating that I will no longer receive securtity updates and that I should update.
What do you think?
Thanks man
masalcedo1 1 year ago

Sad news, I love GNOME.

i have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. if i go to this version of ubuntu will it be faster and will my windows based games work with this? also when i install this can i keep everything on the computer with out iinstalling everything again?
DARTHZANRUIT 1 year ago
@DARTHZANRUIT When you install Ubuntu (or any Linux) you have the option to resize your existing system and put Linux alongside it, or you can wipe everything out (which would remove all of your data) and install it.
As far as your windows-based software, you'd want to check WineHQ's AppDB to see if they work, or look for free/open source alternatives.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
My D drive where I'm going to install Ubuntu has 91 Gb free space. I was just wondering is it wise to give the installation like 90 Gb or leave it to 17 Gb?
HyFoNite 1 year ago
hey, does the installation work without internet? and does it work on windows 2000?
yoyoisrap 1 year ago
@yoyoisrap it does work without internet access, and generally it doesn't have anything to do with Windows. You CAN install it inside of Windows, but the traditional installation involves resizing your Windows partition (or removing it entirely) and installing Ubuntu as well.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
Other than lack of support and dull apps in the ubuntu software centre, Im totaly loving Ubuntu, its Soo much faster and stable than windows, I dont think its ever crashed once.
All it needs now is for some Major game devlopers to give it some support.
Danster82 1 year ago
@Danster82 Lack of support? The support is actually one of the main reasons I went with Ubuntu when I switched to Linux. :)
Agreed about the major game developers, though.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux its just a misunderstanding, by lack of support I ment Ubuntu being supported by hardware manufacturer and software developers. Not the support that Ubuntu provides which is fine.
Danster82 1 year ago
@Danster82 oh, sorry about that. Agreed there about hardware and software support. Mainly it's just companies that don't realize that Linux is a viable platform, so they don't bother to port their code (or code it in a way that's cross-platform compatible)

i am talking about gta 4 like gta san dandreas fifa 10 theese games are not downloadable on ubuntu 10.10
meska961 1 year ago
@meska961 Again, they're downloadable, and it's entirely possible that they could work using Wine (Wine is a program that attempts to let you run Windows-only software on Linux), but it has nothing to do with Ubuntu (or Linux in general).
Lots of game developers just refuse to make their games work on Linux.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
ihate UBUNTU 10.10 you can not download a single thing
meska961 1 year ago
@meska961 um, what can't you download?
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux games ,
meska961 1 year ago
@meska961 I've got quite a few games on Linux. However, I assume you're talking about Windows games. The ones I've really wanted to play, I run through Wine, and if they just won't run in Linux, it has nothing to do with Linux, it's because the game devs aren't supporting Linux...
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
All the computers we refurbish I put Ubuntu 10.10 on them. After wiping the drive of all data I image the computer with a really slick Windows-7 theme. I call it the LYN-WIN-7.
I have all the programs people would love to use, video editors, music editors, open office, skype, picasa, google earth. Those guys working with Ubuntu are going to make MS run for it's money. I can't wait for a year or so down the road to see what they are coming out with.
This is one stable operating system... Get IT !

i would use ubuntu if it was possible to play all games and use my hardwares capabilities to its max... the style and freedom<3. but since i game sometime it just wont work for me? or is it anyway? Wine dont seem good tbh
Necry3d 1 year ago
@Necry3d to each his own, as usual. I have had hardware issues, and I choose to upgrade my hardware to things that work better with Linux (intel wireless, nvidia graphics).
The games I traditionally play are either Linux native, or play well in Wine. Steam-based games play pretty well for me.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux well i play for example, Age of Conan, Eve Online, Bad Company 2 through steam , Civilization 5 ... would be nice if it was a way to make all directx version to work under wine so i can play any game.. but i guess microsoft blocks that. i wish all game devs made games in OpenGL instead . gonna try ubuntu agian now with the inside windows with the Wubu
Necry3d 1 year ago
@Necry3d there are developers working on porting DirectX (somehow) to Linux. They supposedly have Direct3D versions 10 and 11 working already, and they say it's a simple matter to make it work in Wine.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux oh that sounds realy nice. hope it will happen sometime soon within a year or so. would defently start using Ubuntu fulltime then. thats the reason i always left ubuntu becaus lack of it for my gaming. u happen to know if it exist any MSN software for ubuntu that are able to use cams & mic ? didt find any at the time when i used ubuntu
Necry3d 1 year ago
@Necry3d I've actually heard recently that MSN-based software has been having issues on Linux recently, most likely due to some change MS made, but I'm not sure. Empathy and Pidgin are two clients that would be most likely to work, though Emesene and aMSN are supposed to be the best, I think.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
I like the 10.10 Ubuntu Font. It looks good, especially when you have a nice wallpaper.
JesusManson323 1 year ago
@JesusManson323 I agree.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
I've always wanted to switch to Ubuntu, however, I'm worried about bumping into in-compatability. Windows is compatible with everything, so there's no issue there, but I've been wanting to hop into Ubuntu. How often do you Ubuntu users bump into in-compatability, both on games and software.
I don't do major gaming, but I do some gaming, and software, I use it a lot.
OverUniverse 1 year ago
@OverUniverse honestly, it depends on what you're doing, and how flexible you can be. If you absolutely HAVE to have program X on Ubuntu, check to see if there's a Linux version, or check the Wine AppDB. If it looks like it will work, give Ubuntu a shot.
If it doesn't and you just can't live without that program/app/game, don't switch. I don't know how many people have switched to Ubuntu, found out something doesn't work the same way, and left, exclaiming that Linux sucks. :P
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux Well I'm not very flexible, I have programs and games that I need to have, and they don't have a linux version. A lot of software I bought. For example, Fraps, it's only for windows. And there are several other programs and games that I'm worried won't be either.
OverUniverse 1 year ago
@OverUniverse The closest thing I know of to Fraps on Linux is called GLC, and it's only for openGL-based games. LIke I said, if you absolutely have to have a certain set of software, and there aren't alternatives that suit your needs or if they won't run in Wine, I would definitely not recommend a switch.
