  • 17 people don't believe that Lewis Carrol was a pedophile...

  • 17 users don't want to admit their feelings...

  • One of the first Waits songs I've ever heard. Nothing has been the same since, and I'm glad.

  • 16 dislikes, i refuse to believe it.. must be a mirage..

  • And by tracing it twice / I fell through the ice / of Alice..."

I have to stop whatever I'm doing whenever this song comes on. Waits' imagery is haunting yet magical here. It took a while for me to really get into Waits, but I'm a true fan now. This song I think displays a high point in his song-writing abilities.

Parece loucura...

  • Shut up and enjoy the sentiment that man puts into his songs.

There are blogs for your quarrels.

  • The girl I'm in love with is called Alice: "All I can think of is Alice", "there's only Alice.."

you can"t believe how much I do agree with you.

  • The feeling tom waits give is more than enough..

  • Someone wrote, how it makes the human world huge, the rest ?about the idea of humanism in generations of reactions to music that reaches us. A nice experience, something we might all strive for in a Godless Scientific world.

We are and should continue to be free to express the positive responses we have in life, as we can never know the impact of our positive outflow on a human individual. Striving for goodness in life should be as important as not letting someone else do your thinking for you.

  • @generationbexx

You see, This is a comment with contents. Very wise words indeed.

But if you say that im wrong, and that collection of fancy words at the top truly has a meaning, i ask you to clearify it.

like this sentence: "dancing with ebb and tide just in jeans, barefeet and bracelets... and closed eyes, emotion..."

An artist is glad to explain the meaning of his words. Because he wrote it with an intention. An intention he likes to get across to his audience.

  • @Loupland Let it go on the comments page. It deters from the beauty of Tom's artistry to deny anothers' with blatant lack of insight. There are separate ways to send your malease with my expressions specifically. As it appears you desire; Most artists would walk away rather than attempt explaining words of such depth, and guttural imagery, words which most humans would respond to because of the inherent 'self-explanation' from the words themselves. Like the "you can't argue with an idiot" quip.

  • @generationbexx

No! You can't just say i lack insight or insinuate that im an idiot... It shows the type of person you are and the hollowness of your words. You call: "dancing with ebb and tide just in jeans, barefeet and bracelets... and closed eyes, emotion..." Speaking for itself?! Because if i must take the sentence literally... then it's still a lame image you're painting. And i Don't call that gutteral imagery... I know you agree with me deep within. Twas a crappy poem.

  • @GENERATIONBEXX . ooh!

  • why is tom waits in my room sitting next to me...

  • IMHO, the sax makes this song what it is. Love everything about it, but without the sax, it wouldn't be as amazing

  • 4chan brought me here

  • did not likes

  • Goooooooooosebumps!

  • I don't always listen to Tom Waits, but when I do . . . wait, nevermind. I always listen to Tom Waits.

  • @thSubliminalCriminal

    I bet Tom does, too.

  • It's November. The air is raw, so I have to listen to Alice. Even though, to me, this is a song about a pedophile, can't help but feel for this fucked up bastard dealt one more crappy hand. And we've all wanted someone we shouldn't have. That piece is universal. Also, it's amazing that Tom Waits can write a beatiful song with this subject matter.

  • love it from france

  • Tom Waits isn't my favorite artist, but when he gets it right, damn does he get it right

  • oh god the pretentious comments! the horror of it all!

  • The saxophone solo breaks my heart everytime.

  • Every Tom Waits track I ever heard, I like!

  • WoWo, This is beutifull <3

  • Write me some lyrics better than Tom Waits, I double dare you

  • What is it about this song that makes me want to sit in a window, watching the rain slide down in serpentine rivulets, smoking a clove cigarette and sipping cheap red wine? And I don't even smoke.

  • @TheZombieLibrarian

    I love cheap red wine.

  • Surprises me every time, to notice the fish on the album cover. Took me at least 6 months before I first saw it.

  • tom waits is mr wwaxo

  • Gotta love this song....reminds me of special someone once in my life. And yes, my name is Alice :)

  • am i the only one who wants to finish a jack now ?

  • HUMANWINE's cover of this is so amazing

  • @rabbozji ikr!?

  • @rabbozji lucky you. :)

  • Le meilleur album de Tom Waits, selon moi.

  • For me it represents one of the most beautiful love songs - it is without time or space. It is just love caught in a mind and a body - sometimes he manages to live it out, but then again it is in this deep nature of this love that it will never be allowed to be lived out - hence the nostalgia, hence the understanding that there is just Alice and she lives in his soul. Alice will remain to own his soul and he is joyful that she does. She offers a type of protection against the world. My story.

  • I'm from Argentina and I really like drink listening Tom

  • This song is so achingly beautiful that I almost can't stand it.

  • ♥ ...

  • it was probably the most beautiful love song i had ever heard...until i learned it was about pedophilia. louis carrolls real life love for the namesake of alice in wonderland...kinda fucked up the song for me

  • @revjimbeam Yeah, you're right, but you can also apply this song to someone that you're mad about.

  • @GameBoyPL1991 But than in a dark and unhealthy way i guess. I can only conclude (after listening multiple times with your and revjimbean comments in mind) that it applies to a love that no one can know about. But still I think the song and the deep longing it hides are beautifull

  • @rsoomer

"I can only conclude that it applies to a love that no one can know about." Hmm seems like it's a nice interpretation. This song is also very nostalgical. So imagine: man who marry one woman, but in fact, he loves other (hahaha we entering soap opera fields right now). Anyway, I will always love this song no matter what. :)

  • awwweessoooome...

  • I feel I'm a sprite, dancing in Tom Wait's garden after midnight... really I'm in the sweet, sweaty, living room of my apartment, dancing with ebb and tide just in jeans, barefeet and bracelets... and closed eyes, emotion...

Tom carries a song like an emotion you weren't sure you wanted anyone to know about, and drags it lucidly but wet, down a mountain of hope... into a question mark. Leaves you there, walks off stage... I will appreciate his existence forever.

  • @generationbexx Nicely put!

  • @generationbexx really beautifull words.... with tom, plus your words... you fuckin' made me cry... ;')

this lil' things makes the human world huge...and bring hope to the frustrated hearts... thanks.

(sory 4 my awfull english... I'm happy there's this internacional language called emotion ;)

  • @generationbexx I love your words and for me tis exactly the same-his impact on my life and the thanks I have for every song wereso beautifully and eloquently expressed in your post. When I hear the lyrics "I must be insane to go skating on your name and by tracing it twice I fell through the ice of Alice." I truly am lost over there in a world only Tom waits could create for me to inhabit with him. Splendid stuff.

  • @generationbexx

    I can do that too:

Beneath the shadow of wisdom, lies the essence of poetry. Where the old tunes of eternity ring and fill the drunkards mind with hope. Along the path of vanity and egocentricness, one can only find the treasures of solitairity. Therefore, he wonders for the rest of his life...

In Holland we call that Pseudo-Poetry... It sounds asif there is a lesson or a point. But there isnt any...

It's just a collection of fancy words and overusing words that describe emotion

  • @Loupland There's that kind of poetry. And then there's the other end. "Clouds. Fluffy." There's a song that I think's funny: Damn Girl - "I'm tryna find the words to describe the girl without being disrespectful." A writer pointing out in his own song that he can't think up lyrics. I would have written, "The chick has big knockers."

  • @Loupland Oh, I'm sorry. That song is called Sexy Bitch, not Damn Girl. I think he could have used the word "knockers" in a song called Sexy Bitch, but I'm not a lyracist.

  • @Loupland

    after considerate thought:

It sounds as if you might be too invalidating an atheist, to describe how someone shares an experience as 'meaningless poetry'.

Event to relax on others' humanistic traits, efforts to reach out and express, and connect with an impossible global entity in something so beautiful as Wait's artistry.

As you and I both understand that when we die, we cease to continue our lives, making others' seem pointless is too cruel for meaning.

    *!@ Dutch pessimists.

  • @generationbexx

First of, I called it Pseudo-poetry. It means FAKE-poetry.

I read it a couple of times. Because the words seem astho they tell me something. After reading it a couple of times, i found out it didnt say anything at all.

If you're here to tell me that it actually DOES make a point. Could you please explain your words? Could you share with me the deeper thought and the poetic meaning of certain words you choose. Because im pretty certain there isnt one.

  • @generationbexx

Therefore, I dont feel that its an effort to reach out or express or connect to waits artistry. I believe it was a couple of 'pseudo-poetic' sentences following up to eachother. To fool people into giving thumbs up.

But if you beg the differ, i kindly ask you to explain the poetry. Cause if you really meant to be poetic, i dont want to offend you or anything.

  • @generationbexx

And now, here I am, as audience. Asking the artist, you, to clarify the words he wrote.

Now it seems that you cant explain it, because you choose to call me godless and a pessimist. As if its even relatable. Also you start to poeticly describe the situation instead of telling me the point of the first 'poem'. Also you say i make YOU seem pointless, because i criticize a poem you wrote in, probaly, 5 minutes. I never meant to give you the feeling you didnt matter in this world.

  • @generationbexx yes im now in your room with you .hope you dont mind ..i'll just sit in the corner ..ahhh thankyou whiskky and lime is just nice yes please on the rocks ,,,mmmm now lets just chill ..:)

  • @generationbexx nice visual and lyrics generationbexx thank you .

  • @generationbexx you paint with a friendly flower....

  • damawynarebeli efeqti aqvs am simegras ... :X chemze magrad moqmedebs ... <3

  • "and so a secret kiss, brings madness with the bliss"

  • how can some not like this!!?? i love love looove this song!

  • "and by tracing it twice, i fell through the ice of Alice." Genius.

  • I could listen to this song over and over again.

    In fact, I'm going to.

  • My name is Alice... People always think about Alice in Wonderland when I introduce myself... But for me the name Alice can't mean anything else but Tom Waits ♥

  • @ripouland It's actualy the same thing. It describes the "thought to be" feelings Lewis Carrol (the writer of The adventures of Alice in Wonderland) had with the girl Alice Liddell, the underaged daughter of a collegue.

  • Creepy!

  • Dumpert !

  • No one evokes a 'mood' like Tom Waits...this is awesome..

  • This invokes great emotion.

  • beautiful

  • This song is almost too sad and beautiful to bear.

  • this is beautiful, i love you alice!

  • if tom waits wasn't around to croon with me in the wee and ungodly hours of the night i doubt i would be alive. no man can put the struggles of my soul into expression like him. he is blues inaudate.

  • I amsadinastrangeerlandyeeti haveettearsss

  • What a fucking genius.

  • soon im goin to work with one of his old photographers, lookin so forward to hearin some firsthand working stories.

tom waits is the best there is out there.

  • @akpresse Keep us informed.

  • A video response to "who the fuck is alice!

  • I like the way Mr. Waits' songs engender thoughtful responses (mostly). It's a great tribute to the quality of his muse.

  • WHO THE FUCK IS DIANNA AGRON

  • Tom Waits is a lyrical genius -

    someone who can create soundscapes

    not only in his music,

    but also in his lyrics.

    He's got SOUL!

And the music of a man

    struggling with his soul

    can't help but be beautiful.

At least not to me ~

    .

  • Just here, this exact square of floor (well trodden) is where I come when it rains like the world will end, when all my loves are unrequited and when my wine has gone, along with my freinds. When I make promises to myself I have no intention of keeping (like never again) and I sit and drift like this.

  • I must be insane to go skating on your name and by tracing it twICE I fell through the ICE of Al-ICE.

A poet, a story teller, an inventor, a musician, a genius, a magician. That's Tom Waits

  • It makes me grin to imagine Mr. Waits' response to anyone who would spend time arguing about his music. Music unites, if you let it.

  • Sandman Slim

  • ya'll should stop giving a fuck about what other people feel while listening to this song. it wouldn't be beautiful if it affected everyone the same way.

  • @StevenZB1 well i do apologize for my rather depressing comment, but with all due respect, this song is to me anything but uplifting. and i never said this wasn't beautiful, au contraire. Oh well, have fun cutting yourself and all that

  • tell me is this the blues or jazz? please educate

  • @TheMheadCondition first. Good question. Jazz is the answer to your question.

There is a school of thought which states Blues is a form of Jazz . . .I don't feel that does justice to The Blues.

This is a jazz format (if there really is such a thing)

  • @the42voice Wow bad call. Blues is about hardships in life. Jazz is about finding conformity in chaos. Jazz is each instrument doing its own thing but some how finding a common ground with the others playing. Tom Waits is in no way shape or form Jazz. I wouldn't even call this the blues. This is just a man telling a story through his piano to which I drink heavily too.

  • @somethingnewcxb I agree that Tom Waits is an artists' artist

  • @somethingnewcxb It's still jazz though

  • @somethingnewcxb labels make people happy. they can leave the thoughts behind and move on to further alphabetizing

  • @alittlelamb sent me here. Thanks, Dianna! BTW, love Tom Waits' Don't Make Fall In Love With You , as well.

  • i like listening to this whilst rotting away in the corner of a forgotten classroom, stare out the window into the dark landscape of this lonesome city and it's grey skies.

so i thank god for tom waits

  • @chernobylzeug I want to cut myself after reading this comment. Fuck. This music is supposed to be beautiful and uplifting. Oh well, have fun with looking out of the window in the corner and all that.

  • @StevenZB1 how is it supposed to be uplifting? its supposed to be beautiful yes, but its also dark and foreboding and sad and sultry.

  • @chernobylzeug

    "God's away on business" : )

  • How beautiful can this be ??

  • make that 9 people dead inside lol

  • my name is Alice.

  • dianna agron has amazing taste

  • @renatastarzforeve21 What do you mean by this?

  • @renatastarzforeve21 how is she connected?

  • @floyded2 she had this playlist and this song was on it

  • @floyded2 this is the last song on the playlist she made for celebrityplaylists .

  • @renatastarzforeve21 She does, doesn't she? I'm so grateful for it too, she gave me all this new awesome music I wouldn't have found otherwise.

  • Maybe the best damn Tom Waits song ever!

  • tom in wonderland. beautiful.

  • yeah i listened to this song cos its my name too, i love the song but wouldnt want to be like this alice. i read somewhere that hes singing about alice in wonderland tho, random ...

  • @bluefreedomtrue It does indeed refer to the famous Alice, but it's not so random. This album is actually supposedly a "soundtrack" of sorts, composed of songs Waits and his wife wrote for a stage production done in collaboration with Robert Wilson that was loosely based on the relationship between Alice Liddel (the real-life Alice from Alice in Wonderland) and Lewis Carrol who was rumored to be obsessed with Liddel.

  • @gigantecrunch yeah i saw all the alice liddel videos that were recomended with this song, and that makes more sense. i just pictured that disney alice in wonderland which doesnt really fit this song ...

  • this is pretty fuckin' neato!

  • I listened to this because my name is Alice lol. I'm now in love with his voice!

  • Замечательно!!!!

  • his voice makes me want to cough, not saying that it's bad

  • Muy buena .....traducida al español en .... la lluna a la finestra

  • ppppppppppppp

  • Muy buena .....traducida al español en .... la lluna a la finestra

  • Muy buena .....traducida al español en .... "la lluna a la finestra"

  • something magical always brings me back to this song.

  • I dig this song on a personal level b/c Alice is a family name.

  • And I must be insane

To go skating on your name

    And by tracing it twice

    I fell through the ice

  • I'm in love with this song, I know it's not about Autumn, but still it reminds me of it, can't exactly point out why. A bit melancholic, I guess, in a nice way. Thank you, Tom Waits, for singing this song.

  • Piękne. Przypomina mi się "Ruby's Arms" z płyty "Heartattack and Vine" (1980) i w ogóle klimaty "świętej trójcy" płyt Waitsa z lat 80-tych, które najbardziej lubię i do których mam ogromny sentyment ("Swordfishtrombones", "Rain Dogs", "Franks's Wild Years"). Fortepian, bas, delikatna perkusja, liryczny saksofon i stłumiona trąbka - miodzio!

  • Wooooow... this song is brilliant!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks Tom...

  • Most wonderful my Awesomeness! Thx for posting!

  • Yeah it's good. But it's not his best like some people have said.

  • @rsclutch1990 what would you say is his best? just out of interest

  • @WeirdAndGeeky Rain Dogs, without a doubt. Every single track is a classic.

  • @rsclutch1990 Well, that is all a matter of opinion. Personally, it's not my favorite either...but to say that it's not the best, is only your opinion. It could be someone else's favorite.

  • THIS is a perfect song...Measure all pop and standard lyrics against this ruler.

  • What a wonderful album! In my opinion, the best of him

  • really one of his most beautiful records.....especially table top joe

  • chet baker with tom waits!

  • @betao1970 No way, I was just listening to a Chet Baker song and I noticed the similarities in Awesomeness as well

  • @LadyeXo

    I Definitely Agree with betao1970

  • this song makes me cry.

  • My name is alice :)

  • I fuckin' love this album. Poor Edward was the first Waits I ever heard, this song the second. Reeperbahn, Watch Her Disappear, Fawn, and Fish and Bird are still favorites of mine.

  • 8 people are dead inside!

  • @BluesBusker or they just dont got the song, because they cant think of alice :)

  • @BluesBusker I think your right .Pure genius Tom is the master of lyrical hypnotism!!!

  • @BluesBusker

    9 :( (I feel a bit sad for them)

  • @Goog4YourMood i agree. I feel sad for anyone who hasn't heard Tom Waits. It's like an initiation into life!

  • Is there a more poignant song than this?

  • im a real big fan of tom waits but this whole album i think is shit....maybe i just don't "get it" but some of the tracks sound like straight up noise...

  • @ButteryGoombaZappa i dont really like this album either. the title track is amazing and kommienzuspadt is fun but the rest is a snooze

  • @ButteryGoombaZappa Um no this song is not shit! My name is alice btw lol

  • I love Tom Waits.

    I love Alice.

I love Tom Waits and Alice!

  • Sometimes this song is hard to take. This is one of those times. It's dreamy weather...

  • i love alice.

  • Hmm... New love, this song is great. And I am afraid of writing an exclamination mark.

The song is just not made for exclamination marks. It's made for short senteces.

    Poetic sentences.

  • wowwwwww stupenddddddddd

  • how have i NEVER heard of this man before? i mean, yeah, i was born in 1990 but still...shame on the people i know for never mentioning this incredible music to me!

  • @hellspark :-) Try also Swordfishtrombones, it's wonderful!

  • @hellspark i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee him! i happened to find out about him because of a family death! we made a mix CD dedicated to my uncle when he passed away and this was on it!!

  • @hellspark man, we are the same age... i heard about him recently too.... idiotic world!
