  • is it fixable?????

  • How do you yaw it, aileron control?

  • with out the tail roater i was wonderin if it flys kindy like a r/c plane because ive been trying to fly a helicopter for a while and i just cant do it and it looks like that would help.

  • How does it work? Because of speed?

  • Holy molley how long have you been doing Rc?....... Look at all those planes in that garage. Do you do Rc lesson's anytime of the year? I knew that you were into flying but I didn't know how much!!!

  • dave, you inspired me to make a HYPER MSR. i have it done but i need to film it. ill have it up by friday if you wanna check it out and subscribe if u want.

    -michael

  • my god 1st landing was beautiful

  • ...

    Great video Dave.

You inspired me to try this with my Honeybee helicopter.

The HYPER HONEYBEE is now flying with my fleet of helis.

Thanks for the support and sharing your RC knowledge.

    Eric

  • Great Idea! Love your videos

  • you should open up your garage as a museum. kids would love it.

  • Hey what happened to your hand ...did you try to put a steak knife first ..instead of a plate? lol try a spoon first next time heheheh

  • i tried putting a small plastic plate on my broken Picoo Z and it work great

  • omg Dave is a good person who would think such a thing

  • All of you guys want to start rumors about him being a pedophile you all are stupid as the day is long. Dave is a great guy. Just to prove it, search his videos you will notice he teaches a science class about helicopters. Now how could a pedophile do that? You pol are stupid and ignorant.

  • good idea I shuld try it. But how/were did you get the orage things on its skid landing? BTW I got the same heli =)

  • seems like it only work, cause the rotors are spinning fast , with bugger all lift, you couldnt make it like a glider , there is not enough inertia in the rotors and the pitched angle that the rotors sit on isnt right, but the video is very impressive - im a gyro pilot and there is just a few things that really seperates both the helicopter and gyro-

  • dang that thing is fast

  • if u can land it like a plane can u take off like a plane?

  • With a large rotor span (maybe 700 size) and light enough, Would it be possible to make a sort of heliglider that would slowly autorotate and "glide" around using hardly any power with a notar ?

  • the ugly thing in that is the balloon like thing in the landing skits

  • its like sort of like a gyrocopter, in that it has to fly like an airplane.

  • Cool Dave. Two questions: 1. Why the bandaid? and 2. What happened to your Cookie Duster? ha ha - Partok81

  • Hi Dave:

That is pretty neat...who would have thought the mod would change it into an airplane. Your turns looked like you had a rudder. Were you using the right and left movement (slide) to iniate a turn?

    ET

  • Someone is posting comments that this guy is a convicted pedophile..

There is a news report on google that states that he might be.

  • Really? Which convicted pedophile did you hear that from?

  • @printrjm

Your thinking of the Dave from David's Farm

  • Good God Dave! Is there nothing you CAN'T fly??? Man! You are fantastic, and I really enjoy your inquisitive and funny antics! Keep it up! You're a wealth of knowledge and entertainment!

Clear Skies (for flying and star gazing)

    Bobby

  • why did you (nightflyyer) ask kiosho to make the hyperfly vs. other companies

  • Dave i have one more big question. When you go to turn the heli how do you keep the level in the turn?

  • Great video Dave! Excellent desing and I love these will it fly vids, alsways fun!:) 5/5

  • Nicely done, didn't realize that would work on the Falcon 40,lol................Bob

  • excellent work!

  • nice, shame i have a coaxial heli

    i wanted to do this

  • Why not get an FP one! do you need any excuse? :P

  • Those are Pontoons I made. Search the thumbnails of my videos at the right of my home page and look for the video "Stealth Helicopters, you cant fly them if you cant see them" . I show how to make them.

  • awesome Job!!! thank dave for trying it out... i was wondering if it is still possible with the Helis of today. :D should try it out sometime. ohhh does it work with some wind??

  • so let me get this straight, you can steer it left and right and vary the intensity of the turn by varying the throttle? Like a storm launcher?

  • In reality, you do not need to touch the throttle to make the turn. It will fly around very nicely. But if your a heli pilot and have a speed control on it, you will learn how to back off the throttle a bit here and there to make sharper turns. SLs turn by varying both motors speed.

  • Can it take off on the ground to

  • No.

  • It makes perfect sense but I still find this hard to believe. Nicely done!

  • Thanks. It works for sure and very nicely as you see.

  • Excellent video Dave us that are new to the hobby don't even realize what it took to get to the point that the hobby is at today.

Thanks for sharing. Please keep up the concept and story videos I really enjoy them.

  • Thanks very kindly for your comments. I appreciate that.

  • Ok thanks dave . Your videos are always great

  • Thank you sir.

  • Haha, it worked! (I knew it would.) Nice job, Dave. 5*****

  • Thank you sire. I appreciate that.

  • @NightFlyyer Dave I Really Like Your Videos

  • so you have to lan d it like a plane

  • You saw how I landed it, and that is like a very short field landing. It lands like a gyrocopter.

  • good video

    5 star

i am going to try that with my honey bee fp v2

  • again dave we dont need no stinkin tail rotors

  • Great video Dave.

    5 Stars ~ Eric

  • THanks.

  • Dave you are the legend I just bought another old land rover if i handed you enough cash i'm sure you could make thet fly!! love your vids cheers Nick

  • Haha. Flying land rovers....... Doou want nitro or electric? LOL Thanks.

  • Unreal. I'm still trying to hover my Falcon 40 and you're flying it without the tail rotor!

    Semper Fi, Dave!

    Geaux Saints!

  • Haha. You cracked me up with that comment. Thanks kindly.

  • Love the experiments keep it going !.

  • Thank you very much. I will try.

  • Well it worked but you new that all along super dave .i wanted this helicopter but could not find a uk distributer for it ..it flyes very well 5*

    ...{"_*}

  • I know, I knew, but the exhilaration of trying again was great and to see it fly so smooth, I wished I had this airframe for the original 30 years ago. LOL Thanks kindly.

  • You already tried that, with your hummingbuird, thats just a immitation of it

  • Yep, I don't have a Hummingbird anymore, so this was just as handy, and definitely fun.

  • I have part of a hummingbird, some spare links and a spare tail rotor, shame to waste them, might get one of those falcon 40s then!

  • Go for it. Flying something is better than flying nothing.

  • Yet again you never disapiont with your video's Dave ;-) it just goes to show what you can do when you put your mind to it = 5*

  • @startazz Thanks so very much. You know I like to try stuff that folks say wont work and that is fun. I appreciate your comments. Thank you again.

  • 5/5 amazing innovation you tried on that heli!!!

  • @Markustim0 Thank you very kindly.

  • Dave.. you never disappoint! Quite an innovator, in fact, Thunder TIger should have named their Innovator after you, lol! I am always awestruck with all your talent and skills.

  • Me and my father flew helicopters with counter rotary rotor (Like the Ka-52) and then suddenly his upper rotor stopped working. So he landed nice in full spin

  • WOW. Well that makes sense since the 2 rotors counter act torque and spin. He is lucky. There aren't many real counter rotating helis, (due to certain phenomenons causing blade strikes), but the Russians must;ve figured it outwith the KA-52 Thanks for the comments.

  • Yeah, they make the rod to the bottom rotors hollow so they can but the rod to the top rotor (which is smaller) through it. Quite clever, by the way what is your favorite Real heli?

  • So what I gather is the lip on the plate creates an airfoil shape and generates force that counteracts the torque of the main rotors. I'm horrible with helis, so my question is how do you know exactly which way to mount the plate? which way does the lip of the plate face?

  • @BRANDORC The lip faces to oposse rotor torque depending on the rotation of the blades. In this case the deep dish part is on the right side. Idealy the plate should be symmetrical, but I had to cut it to keep the blades from hitting it. It is the weathervane effect that has the most power in forward flight, not the airfoil of the plate.

  • very nice job Dave, it works very well, 5 stars

  • @beverke7 Thanks very kindly.

  • lol dont get ol' Herb started on it being a helicopter or plane now, thats been discussed to death.

Keep at it buddy, lots of fun!

  • could that take of like a airplane to.

    that would be cool

  • @pilotdynan Only handlaunched.

  • That's interesting - it became an airplane!

  • @Vik13vik Thanks, basically a flying machine for sure.

  • Awesome Dave. Your ingenuity and your tenacity created this great video. The new and old working together. It just don't get no better than this. I fully understand the concept and it does work. My brother has a Falcon 40 and mybe I will try this concept on his bird just to get a jaw dropping reaction! LOL!!

  • @standhd I totally appreciate the fact you understand this. I dont know why it is so hard to get the point across, but for sure, most will doubt it will work and when you fly it around, you will blow them away. Just keep it moving forward at wide open throttle and it will fly smooth as you see it here. Thanks.

  • you may or may not remember me contacting you reguarding bringing back the hyperfly .. i would love to see a BLUE THUNDER notar .. i did contact kyosho and got a reply if we all contact them they may rerelease them !!!!!!!!

  • @Bthackrey Fantastic. I would love to see that.

  • Another thought, did you find the center of the plate well? Because there's a geometric way of doing it involving a compass and straighedge. All you do is draw two lines that touch edges of the circle of the plate. Then draw a perpendicular bisector on both of them and where both of the perpendicular bisectors collide, there you go, the center. It sounds like alot of work but when it's done its super easy. xD

  • @josephgrovers i jus studied that in geometry!!! lol..

  • Me too xD that's why i know it so well.....for now.

  • @josephgrovers Yes, but placement is not that critical on this simple weathervane, so I guessed. It works fine though. Glad your learning geometry. My dad was a Geometry teacher. Thanks.

  • Yes, and he can proudly proclaim that he kicked Joe Namath out of his classroom twice for misbehaving! LOL! (I love that story!) Guess "ol' Broadway" wasn't paying attention to his Geometry, was he? LOL!

  • That's amazing, its like a plane.

  • great job Mr. Herbert, do you have to keep pushing forward on the stick to keep the heli in forward flight? that's cool how you can slow the thing down a lot, cool concept too, anyway great job on the video and flying.

  • Thanks kindly. Yep, just be aware of pushing foward to fly and it will really do a nice job. Thanks again.

  • is the falcon 40 a good learning heli? since it is fixed pitch

  • Yes. Learn on a VW, and if you never crash it, then get the Porsche. This is a nice VW.

  • Another Notar Video! You are a genius mr.Herbert! But can this be adapted by a Real Heli? By using wheels and launch like an airplane or by using a tail-turbine like MD 500 that can be shut off when travelling and be on again when just hovering?

  • Thanks. The drones are launched and caught with nets. They are kinda like Benson Gyrocopters, which also do not have tail rotors, but need forwards speed the same as this.

  • so keep it on full throttle? i might make one of these

  • Yep. Try it for fun.

  • Flew my first night-flight the other day!! Check my videos!

I enjoy walks in the park more and more as I get older. I still love the freeway!

    P.S.

I wanna be a "Spark Star"!

    XP

  • Haha. Fantastic. Congratulations. Keep it up.

  • i have been to that museum a few time i havent seen it what section is it in

  • The AMA history of Model Aviation display. I flew it for the whole staff in the parking lot before it went on display.

  • ohh man, you literally trip me out.

So is it safe to say that it flies much like an airplane? Ohhh man I am so tempted to give this a try with my falcon 40. I can fly planes, but not heli's. HAHA!

  • it flies really close to airplane and you just steer around with the right stick, till the battery starts getting low, then land. The Falcon 40 is a perfect machine to try this on. As you see it is nice and smooth.

  • Real nice, that Heli flew wonderful!

    .

    ~DLPlanes

  • Thanks very much. I appreciate that.

  • Very impressive. Thanks for posting such a thought-inspiring video.

  • Thanks kindly. That is the purpose for sure, to let people know they can do anything if they are not afraid to try. Who knows what you will come up with.

  • That looks rlly fun and easy to fly!

  • Thanks. It is (for me)

  • So its easier to fly than a standard heli????

  • Well, if you can fly a plane in forward flight and be able to fly it back to you, this is just like it. In the air, the elevator makes it go up and down and ailerons make it roll left and right. The tail just follows the heli like a weather vane and it is very smooth.

  • wow

Your the man Dave. This is way cool.

  • I really appreciate that. Thanks.

  • Cool :)

  • It impresses me everytime I see your tail-rotorless idea. It's one of those totally-outside-the-box ideas. If I understand it correctly, would the heli go into a spin if you tried to take off from the ground, and it needs the airflow over the plate to "lift" against the torque of the main rotor?

  • Thanks so kindly. Your right, but in forward flight the airfoil of the plate is only about 10 %, the rest is the fact that plate just stays back there following the heli like a weathervane.

  • Wow a Notar is like a Airplane

  • Very true. Like a Benson gyrocopter, only with powered blades.

  • u cool

  • Thanks kindlyt.

  • clearly you didnt watch the video, please try again

  • We have came a long ways since then. Stuff we have now makes it hard to comprehend what we used then. lol

  • Thanks so very kindly. I think we should never forget, cause someday, we may have to start over, ya know.

  • Very nice Dave. I remember when the Hyperfly first came out. I was very excited that there was a 2 channel helicopter at that time. That was Years ago too!

I think many are not understanding the point of this video not knowing the history of this design. This is more or less taking a modern helicopter and flipping back to a working 20 something year old design made for simplicity. Back then helicopters were very hard to fly even more so than today and this gave a chance for a taste of helis

  • You are so right, and I truely appreciate your comments and understanding of the theory. With a little practice any rc pilot could fly this machine that looks like a heli. Thanks you.

  • you should keep the tail rotor on for take offs and landing but then disable it once in flight. shouldn't be too hard with a computer radio and will increase you flight time on any heli

  • @mattman1515 Gosh, I was trying to make it simple. Not many can even fly a helis, let alone know how and when to turn on and off a switch like that. LOL.

  • @NightFlyyer true but i just think it would be fun for those of us who do know how to fly both helis and planes. like a 2 in 1 aircraft

  • hi Dave so this thing cant hover at all right ?

it has to be constantly moving right

  • @AuroraCypher Well, I can land it within 3 feet with no wind as you saw, but again this was not designed to hover! In a 5 knot wind, it can be made to hover, if you know how.

  • Very interesting Dave. ( :

  • Thanks kindly.

  • The other day A friend of mine and I were talking about taking a trip. He talked about the corvette museum I said ya that'd be cool but I wish I could go to Iowa to Dave's museum of r/c aeronautics. You should sell tickets and have a bud light conession stand. Build it and they will come. Corvettes are cool but I don't need to hit the powerball to fly a falcon.

  • @covertyankee Haha. Thanks kindly. Yep, I love Corvettes and for those who cant come directly, I make these videos. I am pleased by your comments. Thanks.

  • The new Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY?? I went by there last Nov. but didn't have time to stop in and check it out. It looks VERY cool from the outside. You can see lots of Vettes in there through a huge window.

  • BTW, I have seen Dave's museum of r/c aeronautics, which is just as cool as any car museum could be. Plus the admission is free! LOL!

  • can i be able to make a smaller one of these for a airhogs rc heli?

  • @Camaroson2008 Unlikely, as they do not go fast enough forward, but give it a try when the tail rotor quits.

  • it would be neat to keep the tail rotor on the back so you could control the rudder, do good forward, and hover!

  • The reason I did this 30 years ago, before computers was to make a 2 channel forward flight helicopter, not to hover, so RC plane pilots could fly without learning to hover.

Otherwise, I just put the tail rotor back on, ya know, since they work better today than they did 30 years ago, if you saw my above video response video. LOL.

  • no, I mean it would be cool to keep the airfoil and prop on to have the best of both worlds. It would be cool to see if that would work. Do you think you could do a quick video on it as a response to this one?

  • If that could deploy and retract...that would do wonders for flight time!

  • There's an Idea, but more than 2 channels would be required. I tried to make this simple.

  • IT gonna snow in illinois again!!! lol 5/5*

  • Thanks for reminding me. LOL

  • Awesome Dave! Can you show us a transition into a hover?

  • Yep, when it is nice enought to fly outside, as it needs the wind, as I said. Otherwise, see my other Hyperfly videos, where I even launched it off my catapult launcher.

  • Hey, Dave great to See you making videos again i missed you.

I wanted to Know in your videos you mention a ETRM, What is it exactly? Thanks and great video as always 5 Stars!.

  • Thanks kindly. Electric Tail Rotor Motor. I coined that back in the early '80s

  • Just guessing. I'm assuming End Tail Rotor Motor. Since he unplugged it at the beginning of the video power isn't used to spin that.

  • @powerman2442 Correct. I coined them ETRMs, Electric Tail Rotor Motors many years ago.

  • nicely done dave, i can see whre the hyperfly was made to fly alot like an airplane to ease the transition in the early days, watching how the falcon 40 banked with the plate on the tail it looked nice and smooth like a co-ordinated turn with a plane....

  • @qsecgtyhd Thanks so very kindly for your comments. I appreciate that. Yes it is a very nice flier.

  • Hey nightflyyer, could you put up a contest? Really would love the enter if so.

  • @ParkFlyyer Thinking about it, so stay tuned.
