ive trained No-gi jiu jitsu for 3 years, and just started training in the Gi. It's a huge ego check to be a white belt and having to go through each stripe ceremony before ranking up. Then gets even worst wen people think im sand bagging it.But, i love training in the Gi and look forward to my promotion when ever it comes
Hey Kenprimo, Ive been training no gi for 7 yrs now, 1 to 2 days a week, my game is pretty good, Ive tapped out blue belts and purple belts along the way, but still haven't gotten my blue belt, is that normal because I train no gi?
What do you do when you have to wait over three months for a bankart repair to heal? Not to mention I needed the bankart repair after dislocating my shoulder in my first tourny. Sucks ass. All I wanna do is train but even if I try to scratch my nugget with that arm I risk ripping the sutures in my shoulder socket.
Guess I could work on leg flexibility, have any stretching exercises you can recommend?
what i find is that when i miss a position or dont do a move correctly or even get dominated i still learn a lot , so if u think of it that way u never really lose
Ken, I'm a purple belt now (reached it in 2010's end) and I've always thought about what you said in this video in a similar way, but I've never heard it from my master or any other Black Belts I know. Thank you so much for clarifying my mind, you've made me feel even better about BJJ and it's just priceless. I always thought that way, BJJ is an art, not Gladiator's stuff. Sincerely, from your eager watcher from Brazil!
Well i'm a blue belt here in brazil , and so far for what i've seen it's all about desire , also i think when u get a black belt , u get a big responsability with it that u have to deal it !
Excellent, excellent advice! One could substitute the terms "ju-jutsu/jiu-jitsu" and "black belt" in this video for just about anything one wishes to master and the level of mastery he or she wishes to attain and the advice would still be great. This reminds me of the Japanese proverb, "Shoshin wasuru bekawarazu," or "Never forget the beginner's mind."
@DireSpring i don't agree! there are times when you can LET your sparring partner tap you out! however you should not use 0 percent defence when they are attempting the tap out, but maybee about 20-30 percent if they are a beginner. However if you are two partners around the same level, then it wouldnt be wrong to never let em tap you out, but thats just then.
@kenprimo hey ken ! i see you do some simple basic technique videos ... i had one question ... if your about to pass the half guard into side control and the opponent is push your hips back with his hands , what do you do ? this stopped my last week haha im just a begginer . hope you get this even though this is an old video i might post again on a different video . thanks keep up the tips !
what? you mean some people have an ego in BJJ, cmon man thats not possible, lol, all kidding aside, I cant agree more with what your saying, your right on target, especially with training partners, it shouldnt be ego, it should be all working together to make that school stronger and more technical, etc
dude ! your brilliant! our gym has a sign saying CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR. And my favorite question to ask students is whats your weakest part of your game?and then start them from there.me and you are on the same page.
I agree 100%

How long does it take to earn a black belt if you train everyday?
undeadpresident 7 months ago
@undeadpresident 5.5-7 years with a GOOD coach. If you train hard 5 days a week, and are regularly on the medal stand at tournaments.

Working on a black belt... no ego...
hah.

Great advice in bjj, any martial arts, and life in general. Having a well checked ego (conquering the self) cultivates a healthy mind. Thanks, Ken

Great concept, people should check their ego at the door the minute they walk into a place, otherwise they'll never learn.

I agree with most of this, but you should never "let" anyone tap you out. That's not fair to them

If you want to go deep in this "ego" subject, try this books:
"Baghavad Gita" - The bible of Hinduism
"Tao Te Ching" - The bible of Taoism
"Dhammapada" - The bible of Budism
"Zen and Martial Arts" - by Roshi Deshimaru
or ANY book from Sensei D.T. Suzuki
Everybody needs this books!
