You see? This is why I can't like "famous" guitarists like John Mayer. We have people like Robben Ford, Chris Cain, Volker Strifler, Buddy Whittington, Jack Pearson, and Redd Volkaert running around making unreal music. Sadly, they don't get the recognition they DESERVE. They are playing on a level so high that most don't have a clue. I wish it was....like it was back in the old days....when the cream would rise to the top. This is how is supposed to be done.
Stratluver, the guys you cited are awesome guitar players, no doubt. But I do not agree with you: Chris Cain is a fabulous blues guitar player, I think everybody that have seen him perform live would agree. His tone, feeling and sense of improvisation are unique. That makes him "great" to me . Anyway it is useless to compare musicians this way .
I hate to sound like a dickhead but I really don't think anyone up there is great ,good yes but not GREAT there is no Johnny Winter,Rory Gallagher Mick Taylor Jeff Beck,SRV, Albert Collins,Freddy King,Peter Green or even a young Clapton up there, instead there's a bunch of competent players going over the same tired ground and not bringing anything new to the table, sorry guys
@stratluvr Clapton,Taylor, and peter Green can't be everywhere, these guys fill in quite nice. These are some young guys and I think they are great anyway, way much more than competent. And all forms of music also go over "the same old ground" eventually. They all get a thumbs up from me....my 2 cents.
This, of course, is not a rehearsal, but the real concert, held at the Sierra Nevada Brewery when the Ford Band (with Streifer and Cain) were doing the series of tribute shows to Butterfield and Bloomfield. I am one of those folks dancing in the audience. With the horn section and keyboardist added, and back up singers, this group was absolutely fantastic. This full band was at the Fillmore, the Santa Cruz Blues Festival, and the SF Blues Festival. Great stuff live, let me tell you.
This absoluely an AWESOME video. I've seen the Ford Band and Chris Cain live and I'm astonished they aren't as big as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin or others.
I agree with you: Chris Cain is awesome, and the Ford Brothers cook with significant energy. But your first sentence is silly. I've been at live shows by James Cotton (in the mid-1970s), Bonnie Raitt, Albert Collins, and Buddy Guy that hit a whole other level. Check the videos of Muddy and his band, mid-1960s, on a Canadian TV soundstage. This stuff is very good, but hardly worth your hyperbole.
Just doesn't get better than this. Robben Ford, Chris Cain and Volker Strifler on guitars. Mark Ford, the baddest harp player in my book - DAMN I wish he would either play more or teach me!
I remember hanging out and seeing Chris play back in the 80's in Las Gatos and the surrounding bay area. I also remember going over to his Mom and Dad's, sitting in his room and jamming. He was, and still is, a gracious person to the max, and like Pat Ford said: the best straight ahead, in your face, true to the bone, Blues player out there today!!
@ 0,39 - where is Robben Ford?

Music Man 110 RD Fifty vintage amp
Chris Cain plays a 1970's MusicMan 110 RD 50 amp on tour right now. I saw him last night in Arcadia, CA and talked at length about the amp.
tootsle2 4 years ago
thanks harpandrew
can anyone comment anything else about the amps?
zardast 4 years ago
volker strifler is using a two rock amp
chris cain a fender 4x10,it looks like a sr
robben ford a fender 2x12,looks like a the twin or tr.
it's very difficult for me to watch white letters of both fender amps
zardast 4 years ago
the fender 4x10 is used by Mark for harp (effects on top)
Chris Cain uses the small amp between the twin and the super

Two Rock is a California amp company that makes Dumble style amps--they're expensive!
Nowadays, they're finding their own voice.
