Wow the 2.0L sounds way different than the 2.5L, this is an amazing time with a 300HP car. The ring tends to favor high HP cars because of the long straights.
No dissrespect meant at all as that was a fantastic lap, but as Tommi is a rally driver would a touring car driver or F1 driver be quicker on a road circuit?
This is a stock 2.0 Turbo Jap spec STI with a roll cage being driven by Tommi Makinen World Rally Champ and one of histories best ever Subaru STi drivers. The car has no engine modification and is the exact same model on sale in Japan.
This Impreza has been especially handcrafted for the Nürburgring, with special engine, turbo, suspension, body parts, electronics, etc. – it has absolute nothing to do with the Impreza you and I can buy. With all the very expensive modifications required to achieve the 07:55 lap time Subaru just emphasizes how lame the stock version is and that the current STI offers no substantial improvement over the previous models. Just forget the STI, his time has come to an end.
I just bought a 2011 STI sedan and i have know doubt that this car could do this time in stock trim... This car is a rocket ship on rails!!!!! I have a vid of it posted in My Videos... Take a look!!! :-)
a nurburgring specialist could get this around faster still... hard to believe the heaviest impreza ever made is tht fastest impreza made despite having 20 or so more horsepower..
That 5th to 2nd was planned, did that to slow down with braking style. You can easily tell just by him leaving his hand on the gear shifter. You don't drive that long and not know what gear you want & it wasn't 4th he was looking for.
this guy is a fucking hack.... didn't flat shift once, and almost blew the motor when he put it into second instead of 4th and it zinged over 8k rpm.... them sti's like to be tossed on dirt but on pavement they don't.... car has way more time in it in my opinion...

@menglee .....mmh its hard and cruel but its possible......since u can rip up a stock miata NB Roadster to almost 110 km/h on 2nd gear it should be possible to shift back from 3rd to 2nd while going approx. 125 km/H......but still the engine won't be to happy with it....but i think he did a mistake on that one cuz he wanted to shift into 4th
@menglee It's not a regular transmission, it can take a lot of stress, the modify the hell out of that car before they race it, and second.... he did it for a reason, it he didn't down shift he probably would have taken the corner too fast and bam, theres the wall.
@menglee If thats a stock car he fucked the trans, what happens is when you switch at really high rps for a tranny it breaks off the little | | | | id show you a picture if i could and then it eventually becomes ____ broken off and you have a missing gear...
going down to 2nd from 5th while going ~120kph is by no means good for an engine, but he quickly corrected, so little to no damage was done to the motor. If you leave the RPM's up like a dumbass then yes you can blow up your engine but when you quickly correct it's very hard to do serious damage. correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm right
theres not too many people that can make decisions on lines like this.there is a reason why tommi looked like he could have done better.(this is for the haters)if you can do better get ahold of the whole scene you have posted bullshit on and see if you can do about it other than that quit insulting an artform get a life grow up if you think you have what it takes to beat a professional put op or shut up poser
I wish we had this higher reving 2.0 Liter engine in our STi in the states, you can tell the car is designed for it. Most likely explains why US version is slower.
Thumbs up to Subaru, obviously the engine and drivetrain are build strong. I guess there are not to much cars that take a 1500+ rpm overrev like it is nothing and just keep on going full power.
Little wild driving style Makinen got, specialy how he uses the inside of some corners... but hey, he´s a rallye driver and they sometimes tend to beat the crap out of theirs cars :)
Does anyone know what tyres they run for their timed lap or are they required to run factory fitted? I noticed they fitted a Racing seat which is technically a performance enhancement over the factory car
@god084 factory tires are used and it isnt a racing seat it is just a different 4 or 5 point seat belt so the driver doesnt go flying around. not an performance enhancement at all.
@andelliotsaid Watch the over video 2011 WRX STi sedan attacks the ring. Same car, same driver yet it shows full racing buckets in it. I also doubt you could run a 7.55 with factory brembos which I also suspect have been upgraded to a six pot caliper for the fronts which can also be seen in the other vid. Is there any where I can find more accurate info on the car setup? Seems hardly fair not running the car in 100% factory minus a harness as it is a safety issue.
@Apoelultrassk8 i just purchased one to check it out. i usually practice runs on Fuji speedway and i have to agree. i like the feel better4 than the evo X (on GT5). never drivin either in the flesh yet
just wondering. i was watching the brake and throttle response meters. i didnt notice a heeltoe downshift but it sounded like he was doing it anyways. does the car have the same synchrorev system as the nismo 370? or is it just not showing up on the telemetry
Do you know what is wrong with this STI? People complaint about the Hatchback. So, what did Subaru do? They added the trunk and the wing. It just doesn't look right. It seems like the Subaru engineers didn't spend any time to design this car. The best year are the 98, 99, 04 to 07 models. BTW, Newer doesn't necessarily means better. After 07 models, Subaru hasn't brought back a new STI that makes everyone go Wow.
It has the engine out of the JDM R205 that produces 320hp also. No extra go fast parts. It has a mix of all stock parts we can all get. Very impressive for a production car with only 320hp. I think that time is unofficial but it's got to be close to the fastest production time. Anything under 8:00 is fast in my book. I don't like the new Suby but at least the 2011's wider body is in the right direction.
@Tr1pLeC Then why would you look up a video of this so called "weak piece of misery?" Let people buy what cars they want to buy and respect their decisions!!! Do you think it makes you cool because you have a fucking Accord that can somehow beat this STI around the Nurburgring!?!?!?! NO IT DOESN'T BECAUSE IT'S AN ACCORD!!! AKA THE MOST BORING PIECE OF SHIT EXCUSE OF A SEDAN ON THE CAR MARKET BEHIND THE CAMRY!!!
The car he is driving is not a production/stock spec WRX STI. It is a prototype with upgraded performance. But i too dream of a day where a stock WRX STI can lap the ring with the same time as a f430, 911 turbo and c6 z06. But thats just not realistic without upgrades. :(
I heard that the car had only racing seats and racing seat belts, nothing else done to the car. I red it from a Finnish magazine. Tommi Mäkinen is Finnish and I believe that they would have mentioned if there was anything else done to that car. (Of course I'm not 100% sure 'cos magazines can exaggerate)
car had bigger turbo and better suspension too. They wanted to beat the '04 STI so much they had to put upgrades :P I really wonder what was the setup of the 04 one that did 7:59 and with which driver. 04's will always be the fastest in my eyes
It's too bad there's nothing like that Nurburg ring in Quebec... well, if anyone knows about that, please tell me... I live in Quebec city and we got Circuit Sainte-Croix Riverside-Speedway which is pretty neat though, but nothing like this awesome Nurburg circuit! 20something KM in a bit less than 8 min is freakin incredible!!
@philacoudre kmh , this is a japanese car.. and how could it possibly go at 230 mph :P ? sick ride anyway, for having one myself, i totally recommend buying from Subaru
The mustang could never beat this for a simple reason, it is not built for that type of driving. Horsepower means nothing if you're car is not designed to corner well, which the mustang cannot do.
yea, lets indeed see that, I would REALLY like to see the Mustang get a better time. To bad Ford isn't doing it. Actually better yet lets see the Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition around this track. That would beat the STI, I am sorry.
my dream car is a subaru impreza wrx sti. but i am also a ford man. i do think the new 5.0 would be faster, but on this course? im not sure. think?! AWD vs. RWD. and to that comment, there is no way a mustang handles better. obviosuly, you'v never driven one. they ride very roughly, and plus, th gt500 shakes while idling. so i think that saying the 5.0 gt handles better, is a false statement
TOo bad this is a Japanese prototype and not the usdm production car... people are so hyped about it but they think its way better than it actually is
Its pretty much a production car. This one only had minor upgrades, which btw are less than what customers will do to these cars when they get em. They usually go for 500whp engine upgrade. Better brakes, suspension. Etc. The car here is still only 305hp at the crank.
@83ls i know people will put major upgrades in their sti but they cant drive like this guy. yes the usdm sti has 305 crank but this is basically a jdm sti spec c (WAY faster than the us one...why its rhd). it has better suspension, brakes, aero, has a rollcage not to mention a 320hp 2.0L with a much bigger turbo than the us sti (better top end speed)
@okami11408 subaru did have the 2010 sti in a automatic, dual clutch set up, but was only available in japan. but the manual could be stronger in the long run plus not to mention easier to maintain.
I get my new 2011 STI next month. I think I will probably baby mine a little more than he does in the video. BTW, I am so excited that even though I am in Brazil on vacation right now, I can't stop thinking about getting my new car.
wtf 1:40???

Funny thing is that Tommi has driven his whole life wheel on the left side!!!
In Finland we have the wheel on the left.
Of course real driver can drive from both sides.
mikohirv 1 year ago
The car he is driving is not a production/stock spec WRX STI. It is a prototype with upgraded performance. But i too dream of a day where a stock WRX STI can lap the ring with the same time as a f430, 911 turbo and c6 z06. But thats just not realistic without upgrades. :(

@Ferraritestdriver

@mikohirv
car had bigger turbo and better suspension too.

20something KM in a bit less than 8 min is freakin incredible!!
philacoudre 1 year ago
whoa... that was just mind blowing! man.... Is the speed-o-meter in km/h or mph?? I'm freaking amazed anyway! That was incredibly fast!!
My next ride will probably be a Subaru.
philacoudre 1 year ago
@philacoudre The steering wheels on the right side so probably Km. He's up in the 200's on curvy roads and 90 on turn. So yeah
vboytan 1 year ago
@philacoudre kmh , this is a japanese car.. and how could it possibly go at 230 mph :P ? sick ride anyway, for having one myself, i totally recommend buying from Subaru

i know fuckn moroni i was answering to someone asking if it could be mph's. km/h = kph : | . read before posting ! or just dont post at all

The mustang could never beat this for a simple reason, it is not built for that type of driving. Horsepower means nothing if you're car is not designed to corner well, which the mustang cannot do.
clos4672 1 year ago
yea, lets indeed see that, I would REALLY like to see the Mustang get a better time. To bad Ford isn't doing it. Actually better yet lets see the Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition around this track. That would beat the STI, I am sorry.

wow the better

mustang pffffft never loll
alainlezouf 1 year ago
@alainlezouf
actually the new Mustang is in this ball park.
The 2010 Camaro lapped the Nurburgring in 8:20, even the Cobalt lapped it in 8:22, both those times are faster than an Evo, 370z or 2002 STi
SuperColossal33 1 year ago
my dream car is a subaru impreza wrx sti. but i am also a ford man. i do think the new 5.0 would be faster, but on this course? im not sure. think?! AWD vs. RWD. and to that comment, there is no way a mustang handles better. obviosuly, you'v never driven one. they ride very roughly, and plus, th gt500 shakes while idling. so i think that saying the 5.0 gt handles better, is a false statement
ToddJamesForet 1 year ago
I don't think that's a mis-shift,
it looks like he does that on purpose because the revs are low enough to shift down a few gears at that rate.

TOo bad this is a Japanese prototype and not the usdm production car... people are so hyped about it but they think its way better than it actually is
LVSpeed 1 year ago
@LVSpeed
Its pretty much a production car. This one only had minor upgrades, which btw are less than what customers will do to these cars when they get em. They usually go for 500whp engine upgrade. Better brakes, suspension. Etc. The car here is still only 305hp at the crank.
83ls 1 year ago
@83ls i know people will put major upgrades in their sti but they cant drive like this guy. yes the usdm sti has 305 crank but this is basically a jdm sti spec c (WAY faster than the us one...why its rhd). it has better suspension, brakes, aero, has a rollcage not to mention a 320hp 2.0L with a much bigger turbo than the us sti (better top end speed)

Manual > Automatic
okami11408 1 year ago 3
@okami11408 subaru did have the 2010 sti in a automatic, dual clutch set up, but was only available in japan. but the manual could be stronger in the long run plus not to mention easier to maintain.
grungemaster06 1 year ago
@okami11408 better gas mileage too!!!

I get my new 2011 STI next month. I think I will probably baby mine a little more than he does in the video. BTW, I am so excited that even though I am in Brazil on vacation right now, I can't stop thinking about getting my new car.
