First you need a TV, DVR (or anything else), DVD player with a blank DVD, 2 RCA cables (Red, White, Yellow). Have one RCA cable output from the DVR to TV then have the other RCA cable output from the DVR to DVD player. Change the TV input to the DVD Player screen then on the DVD player change its input (not the TVs input) to the DVR screen then insert the blank DVD and press record when ready, after your done press stop to finalize the DVD when your finish.
dvr=waste of money...why pay for that...there is a way to record what ever you want for free and burn it or throw it on a flash drive and do what ever...just dont tell your cable company
But if you have satelite or cable this might be a problem. Appears you need another set of cables to go from burner to tv so you can see what you are burning.
That is actually a "composite" hookup and not a "component" hookup as was mentioned in the tutorial. Also, it should be noted that composite is only good for Standard Def shows that you've recorded. If you would like to make a DVD of HD shows (which would be downconverted to the standard def DVD recorder anyway) It is recommended to go component, if your DVD recorder permits.
It would depend on what model DVR you are attempting to transfer to a laptop. Currently the Tivo brand DVR records in a proprietary format just as the DISH and DirectTV Motorola DVR varieties. If you are using the Motorola with Satellite, chances are you are S.O.L. However, if you are using a TIVO, I believe they have something called "Tivo to go" that permits transfer of their files in a limited capacity.
I have the recalled durabrand DVD player shown in the thumbnail!

I'd like to see how this would work with a Motorola DCT6416 to an external burner or external HDD.
