  • как он говорит: спасибо!? тот же голос., что и сейчас...мммм это супер! до мурашек по коже :)

  • Depeche Mode were part of the electronic/futurism music ala Gary Numan, OMD, early Ultravox et al as pioneered by Kraftwerk. They weren't New Romantics, New Romanticism was a reaction to the nihilism and fashion of punk, using electronic music as part of the package but not as end in itself. New Romantics were generally Soulboys who jumped on the electro music bandwagon while it suited them.

  • I think the early periods of most artists is better than their 'grown up more serious' later stages, particularly the early hit records and naturalness of performance as opposed to the cocksureness of success and complacency of fame.

  • @flaxonx3 I totally agree with that! I happens so often. Alphaville might be seen as another example.

  • I love this era of Depeche!!! I love the sound they produced when they were just finding their rhythm and voice with these first records!!! Plus they just looked so modest and innocent!!!! Ahhh those were the days....the days before Dave wore nothing but black trousers with vests on stage and before he felt the need to grab his crotch every 15 seconds on stage like he does now....

  • Simply precious..

  • musica complicata per cervelli eccelsi

  • Why on earth are people fighting over what is more New ROmantic.

New Romanticism conjured up heaps of different things.

From Synth Pop to Tribal to Fashion and beyond!

Bands like Depeche Mode, Visage, Culture Club to Adam And The Ants, Duran Duran, Japan, The Human League all were radically different but all came from the school and times of the New Romantics!

  • the lads at there best

  • jaja.. que tiempos... pero muy buena cancion...

  • @MARISOLCENTENOZORRA ..pocos comentarios en español!! see you es un temazo solo par pocos conocedores

  • hermosa cancion!

  • For me -

    best DM song.

  • we misied the 80's,everyone who was teenage at that time misied depeche mode,80's was the best year's.

  • weird but i was 16 when this was a hit - there was a local girl who i was infatuated with , i knew she'd go out with me but i just couldnt' find the courage to ask her, best of it was she knew i was interested in her but she was as shy as me! this song just evokes all those emotions, hormonal times !

  • Thanks Depeche Mode for they great music and the big influence to later electronic music artists.

  • Great track. If you like this you should also check out Get The Balance Right!- another really great track- released on single and 12" but fairly amazingly never on the early albums.

  • The synth is awesome in this song

  • I LOVE THIS SONG SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH. YAY GO DEPECHE MODE!!!!!!!

p.s. This is my favorite song

  • @threelilkittens3 read me comment i left about my cat and this song.

  • OMG!!!

  • perfect song for being young and in love...innocent

  • this is the song to my life.bring back alan wilder

  • HELLO!!!

    HELP ME , PLEASE!!

somebody know if depeche mode do a video in colour green when the singer is sitting in a sofa and a lot of girls pass front him the song is something like " open your eyes and see yeah! open your eyes and see!"

  • @syrenytha- could be Personal Jesus but the lyric is "reach out and touch faith"- black and white video, Anton Corbijn, but think he's on a sofa with loads of girls about (they filmed it somewhere like The Chicken Ranch in the States)

  • @syrenytha A "green video' I remember for them ..Get the balance right", but I don't think that the lyrics say something like

"open your eyes and see yeah!open your eyes and see!"...Do you remember something else?

  • @ANDRES77 ...Sorry...it was "Leave in silence'"

  • LOVE THIS SONG wish i was around then, im only 18...and i think ive just discovered a favourtie band :D

  • Esto si que es hacer carrera musical. Madre mía que chavalines!!!

  • Dave's vocal was very good. they seemed to be a little stressed...Alan looks so fucking handsome as usual;P

  • pronto? parlo col dottor solazzo?

  • Great song.. Best depeche track ever!

  • all i want to do is to see you again, is that too much to ask for?:D

  • miming!! lol

  • Is it rare to see Wilder and the 'featured' tape deck

  • this songs in retropect is really a rebirth to the joy of Depeche in that the current underground scene is raging to New wave music. And even so, this song stands out so strongly. Its sosynpop yet so dark and moody. It made me love not just depeche but music on a whole new level. Thank you depeche, this song is now my ringtone when my gf calls me!!!!!! thats how much I love Depeche

  • i prefer personal jesus, very deep,i think mode have changed with the times, thats why theyve lasted nearly 30 years, you adappt and progress, there more of an album seller than a single seller, which is a shame, these four men are genious, the former alan wilder, fletch, gore and gahan should be more recognised in the music industry, all the top artist steel from mode for there samples!!!!

  • I agree Johnny

  • DM were, are & always will b amazing

  • deja la meme voix trop bon

  • Dave looks about 12 years old, doesn't he? And ah, the heady days when pop stars could wear polo/turtlenecks on tv and still be thought cool. I'm going to throw my hat into the 'I prefer the early years' side of the ring, btw.

  • LOL. How high up are Gahan's strides!! Good performance tho!

  • i love this song it's wonderful <3

  • Comment removed

  • Gonna love DM ALWAYS AND 4-EVER!!! This came out when i was like 12,still adore it..

  • now i know where lady gag gets the intro for poker face from

  • So typical of "artist" now. They aren't talented anymore...

  • I think that this New Romantic period for Depeche Mode - which produced this song and "Get the Balance Right" - was Mode's real golden era. Of course they became an international phenomena after they adopted a faux-industrial sound, which began with Constructions Time Again in '83, and was nailed down with Some Great Reward in '84. The story is an interesting tale of how the macho rock mentality has a very long reach - after all, New Romanticism was quickly replaced with more macho sounds..

  • @GoblinsFriend You're not entirely right although I think I know what you mean. Whlie I like most of their early "new romantic" songs, I don't think they make up the "golden age" of DM. In my my view they're a bit too sentimental and adolescent (I'm not saying this in a derogatary way). I also don't think you can say they adopted a "macho-like" attitude in the following. They have entered their most sublime and profound artistically period with the following albums.

  • @sgwolp, it is really a case of to each his own. But, just to be clear, when I say their "New Romantic period", I am referring to a very brief period around the departure of Vince Clarke. The early days of Depeche Mode were more Futurist than New Romantic. By the mid-80's there was a growing intolerance for all things New Romantic, fey, European, and the groups that came out of that period made great efforts to reinvent themselves, usually as something more ethnically generic and macho.

  • @GoblinsFriend As you saidit's a matter of taste. My favorite albums are "Music for the masses" and "violator". I my opinion these two albums represent their artisctic peak. I'm not as familiar with the bands artistic development as you seem to be, I always thought that this hard ,industrial sound just reflected Martin Gores interest in SM.

  • I love Music for the Masses and Violator, with Playing the Angel being their peak IMO. I'm not keen on their earlier albums so much, they've gotten much darker I think and I like it better.

  • @GoblinsFriend Thanks!! I was trying to remember that song....Get the balance right.

  • @GoblinsFriend i agree but when i think of the king of te new romantics (even though they deny this) i think of david sylvian and japan..that whole thing laster basically from 79 to 83

  • @GoblinsFriend this was their ELECTROPOP period. (not new romantic, do they even look like new romantics to u ? it's a geek look)

depeche mode was never new romantic infact they was in firm contrapposition to the new romantic bands (which dave gahan famously referred as "sissies" in an interview)

  • @animativ I did not say they were New Romatics, but that they went through a New Romantic period, exemplified by this song and Get the Balance Right.

Actually they were considered New Romantic in their earliest incarnation. And they did fit the category - electro, European, fey.

New Romantic, Futurist, Electropop, New Pop, Euro-pop. There is a great deal of overlap with these different categories. Depeche was and still is more New Romantic than many bands who were categorized as New Romantic.

  • @animativ P.S. they had a geek look because they were geeks. They did not have the beauty of Gary a Numan or a David Sylvian, or the daring style of a Steve Strange. So sue them. And actually, some of them are wearing distinctly New Romantic outfits.

  • @GoblinsFriend Shake the Disease in 85 and strange love in 87 were my favorites.

  • @GoblinsFriend

I agree, though I put "Contstruction TIme Again" in with the first two.

It was really with "Black Celebration" ("Some Great Reward" being a transitional album) that they started to (over?) emphasize the s&m erotic brooding sound.

  • @GoblinsFriend

interesting points. I never thought of that. But yes, their sound has changed a lot over time. Even Dave's concert singing has changed significantly from a smoother style to an aggressive one.

  • this is great, and reminds me/erinnert mich an den fruhen Achtzigen (Jahren)

please feel free to correct my German: ich habe nie die Moglichkeit mein Deutsch zu uben X

  • ALAN depeche mode needs you back!

  • Am I the only person who prefers the early Depeche Mode to the more "polished" albums? This to me is better than "Personal Jesus"...

  • I am with you! I can listen to these songs over and over and over again and not get tired of them. I listened to See you and It's called a heart like 50 times in a row )

  • I prefer the darkest DM from the latest albums such as BS, MFTM and Violator, however my favourite album is the underated Broken Frame.

  • @JohnnySwitchblade I agree with u,loove their really old songs..:)

  • @JohnnySwitchblade and? I prefer all of their albums...their older stuff is great but their more plished are great also..an artist always evolves..they are not going to remain in one hole just to please a few people on youtube 20 years later.

  • @JohnnySwitchblade I too prefer the earlier stuff, though I would not say it is less polished than DM's later material. I know what you mean though, and I think the problem that I have with the later stuff is that it has less soul - the guys had the formula down pat, and so come off a bit as hacks. (I know such a comment would infuriate one or two...hundred....thousand fans.)

  • @JohnnySwitchblade You ARE NOT the only person ... :-) ! IMHO "REAL DEPECHE MODE" start with "Speak & Spell" (with the mythic Vince Clarke) and End with "Violator" !!!! Then they adopted that "pseudo-grunge-dirty sound" (disappointing for me) with "SOFAD" and after that, well i don't know, their latest album are always well-produced but they lost their magic touch, became boring (most of their tracks now are downtempo, not-danceable...) I don't like them anymore :-( a question of taste ...

  • @JohnnySwitchblade No your not alone. totally prefer the early 80's peche..

  • @JohnnySwitchblade No, me too I prefer the early DM. Don't worry about that!!

  • @JohnnySwitchblade The earlier ones by them were much better , just my way thinking and memories of past as well;

  • @JohnnySwitchblade 1000% agreed and here is why...

dm was a synth pop dance band..and to me everything up to violater was great..but they changed thier sound..i thought SOFAD was a sell out because of the pressure of the grunge era synth became very uncool..now in doing this they built on thier fan base and were huge but..for us synth dance kids it was a let down and in my opinon the beginning of the end..when i saw how he looked in (ifeel you) vid i thought he looked silly i was tuned off.

  • for sure

  • @JohnnySwitchblade, for sure

  • @JohnnySwitchblade

I first liked the some more polished songs until they became famous and i got crazy by hearing people are people everyday... Now i prefer the earlier stuff with some songs from the 80s 90s. Best music of asrtist is always in their early years when they hav a future with a lot of fantasy ideas and experimental ideas. The older artist become the worser crappier and idealess they get. Same for u2 human league and simple minds. First stuff is brilliant for me :)

  • @JohnnySwitchblade I totally agree!

  • I disregarded their first few singles as I thought it was Thunderbird puppets meet Woolies Casio keyboards meet the Bay City Rollers. Then this rolled along. It was a haunting thing, of some considerable quality. And then, generally, after that they were a train on rails.

  • Message to the DM Boys (after hearing to the last album) - GET ALAN! You need him. Desperatly

  • you need to take some pills

  • It seems like you already did:)

  • to jest to

  • Really good performence by Depeche Mode.Just

Fletch usless us ususal.Perfect example how to get money doing nothing, how to get reach&famous been just friend of a one memeber

Look at that guy! He's have no idea what he supposed to do. FUCK!

  • Fantastic GRANDE DEPECHE MDOE

  • They still need Alan. Martin made the demos and Alan would hammer Martins rough demos into shape. He was the one that worked in the studio with the producer while the other guys were off on holiday. Now the Depeche Mode sound relies heavily on whoever is producing their albums. I always liked Alan's songs "In your Memory" and "Work Hard" they were b-sides but they should have made the album. Don't know how much Dave and Fletch contribute in the studio but it looks like it's all up to Martin now.

  • Dave at least sang at the studio, Fletch only critizised other´s work.

  • alan wilder was the talent at depeche mode !

  • Never liked Alan Wilder in the band, his singing was as flat as a fart. Much prefered it when Vince was in the band.

  • Whoooa bad comment!!!!

If Vince stayed, Depeche Mode would probably have not lasted this long. Alan gave them credability and was a fantastic arranger of music and could play alot of Depeche's melodies with one hand- he was that good! He wasn't a singer that was left to David and Martin.

  • Menuda joya... !!!! gracias por compartirlo en You Tube.

    Saludos

  • Did a gig in '91 at a club called the Hard Club in Soho. Fletch was there and thought we were rubbish. Ironically when the guy who ran the club told us my friend and I, who made up our band turned to each other and both said at the same time, "Excellent". Of course, because Fletch doesnt actually didnt actually do much more than manage and admin for the band then. Bless Him!!! We must have done something right eh?

  • Good quality..wish that Alan Wilder would come back

  • they were good live then as they are today:)viva depeche!

  • haha that spikey leather armband thing on Martin's arm... I think he had had this BDSM/leather fetish for a long time before he officially got into it in Berlin, he just kept it as a secret. :D

  • oh baby martin is so cute.

  • He looked better after the drugs

  • was there in my room watchin the tube every friday from 6 remember this song well

  • the bass lines are sequenced from anything 1982ish onwards, simple ass that

  • Like these vocals better than the original mix.

  • Depeche Mode are GODS!!!!

I just love the beauty and the melody of this song.

  • ARE GODS 4 SURE.

  • such a sweet face

  • no mate , he does NEVER play anything life , shame on him

  • look andrew dose plays live, you just dont hear it because its bass!

    omfg

  • He does play some bass notes live, but the main bassline is sequenced.

  • it's an electronic band, so why not. back then seqeuncing techniques would hav only added to the artful... ah crap... its late and ia m pissed again so basically

    WHY NOT?

  • Well, I have nothing against playing a bass synth live, so please don't bite!

  • did fletch EVER play anything live??? easiest job in the world hes got on tour!! lol

  • look if you new the history of depeche mode. you would probley understand that andrew plays bass on peano!

so you can hear everything he plays live.

    gee,

  • dedico esta cancion a mi amigo raul buelna diaz, que fallecio ayer y le gustaba esta cancion...DEPECHE MODE, NUMBER ONE

  • no you´re right, the first song remains me the intro from the demo in which THE GREAT Miki Chaves, on drums, interfear Martin´s cojonera for my pleasure, and your´s too lads

  • Martin didn't play the interlude!!! Am I wrong?

  • No, this came from tape.

  • It's Dennis!

  • I sometimes think how the quality of music would be now if Allan Wilder was still in the band :(

Btw, after 27 years Fletch still dances like that :P

  • Alan leaving DM is a blow DM never recovered. DM has been wasting albums and time just cashing out on their name ever since.

  • Ultra is still superb.

  • my favorite DM-Song...and "sun and the rainfall"....
