i just found in a book in an old book i got two articles about man o war one about his death (the day it happened) then one about the statue that was built in his honor please message me if u have an info on how much they might be worth i am just curious :)
he is my BOY! Love him! Of course there is Secretariat and Ruffian....but before them came MAN O WAR! He is truly the king....he will always be...kudos to those who came after....but...MAN O WAR came first....he led the pack....
My baby boy's great, great, great, great grandfather! Identical spirits. Cloud Breaker never gives up on life, after leaving the track to get beaten and starved he's happy with his new owner, and healthy and fast as ever :)
There is far too much made about that 100 length win. He raced a replacement horse by the name of "Hoodwink" who was brought out of the barn after the scheduled horse (yes, it was a 2 horse race) was scratched. In reality, Man O' War beat a horse who hadn't been trained or prepaired to run the race.
Pt.2 - "In my opinion the greatest of them all was Man o' War. I rode Upset when he beat Man o' War, the only time Big Red was licked. I laid a trap for him as he came up on the inside and I got him in a pocket. The rules forbid that today. If I had let him out of the pocket he would have won by six lengths."
Pt. 1 - I don't know why this story is never mentioned but in the November 9, 1959 Sports Illustrated there is an article titled "The Question: Which Was The Greatest Race Horse Of All Time?" In it Bill Knapp, the rider of Upset (and the great Exterminator) gave this story - (please read Pt. 2)
My riding trainor was lucky enough to own a stallion that was a direct decendent of Man O' War. His name was Hero ( i don't know his registered name) and he looked exactly like him too. he never did too much riding because he had straight ankles and wasn't a very graceful horse. she couldv'e gotten it fixed, but it wouldv'e been a ton of money and it didn't hurt him at all. Sadly, he died at the age of 11 from a heart attack. he sired 3 beautiful fillies though.
Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Phar Lap and all the other champion Thoroughbred or Quarter horses were definitely fast, but I personally think Man O War could of out ran them all. He was like the foundation of all thoroughbred race horses.
a dear freind of mine .. had to put her horse down on new years Eve she was related to Man of war thru In reality
she was only five years old and had a great season in Louisina last year-her owner had hoped to breed her this year...
she had been treating for pneumonia.. and then got colic
she put up a brave fight for along time i saw her run on Christams night.. she looked great.. its heartbreaking.. but watching this video made me realize whata great heart she had as well
What impresses me so much is that Man O' War and Secretariat were winning on oats and hay. Horses these days get fed a diff ration of feed and still cannot out run horses years ago.
Wonderful horse, great video, but I surely could have done without the image of the great champion dead in a coffin. Having just lost my own horse at age 35, I would much rather see them alive.
@Valkyrie91a At least Man 'O War and Secretariat are buried whole.I saw M O W's grave at the Ky Horse Park ten some years ago. They also had statues of the two big Reds and M O W was bigger.
I love Man O War but I hate when they change things. Man O War did not start backwards. He started sideways like alot of them did back then because of the rope starts. Also he didn't lose to Upset by a nose. He lost by a 1/2 length. That's official. Man O War was up on the pace halfway through the race just couldn't get to Upset that day. Cheers to Man O War and his great life and career!
this video while good is filled with so much false/incomplete and inorrect urban legend it ridiculous. The guy they keep talking to is just quote urban legend. If you want the real story in more depth than you can imagine possible... read the book Man o' War by Dorothy Ours.. she took years to right it and has got the true story after her years and years of research within the industry
Oh where's the rest of the video! Thanks for posting this..I only read about his legend in books as a child..just a beautiful horse..reminds me of Secretariat. Big and built.
great video..I find it touching that Man O' War's faithful groom, Will Harbut, died about 30 days before Man O' War died; some say from a broken heart. Truly, Man O'War "wuz da mostest hoss" as Will used to say...
Man O' War....truly "he wuz da mostest hoss". I find it touching that Man O' War died about 30 days after his faithful groom, Will Harbut, who uttered those words, died..some say Man O' War died of a broken heart...
cf1970, many, many thanks for posting this. Didn't know too much about this wonderful horse until I saw your post, and I love him! My heart will always be with Secretariat, because I am old enough to remember watching all of his superb Triple Crown races. Now thanks to your video, I have another marvelous racehorse champion to cherish. Thank you again!!
Thanks very much for posting this incredibly rare video! As big a fan as I am of Man O'War, I'm a bigger fan of Saratoga and just glimpsing what it looked like as the horses headed toward the track some 90 years ago was truly amazing!
I own a Thouroughbred gelding who is a descendent of Man O War. He never raced but I am sure he would have won. He is a true black with a marking very similar to that of Man O War's. He is 17.4 hands high, His name is Comanche Gunnman
I can't believe I only just thought to look up video footage of Man o' War, given my obsession with this amazing horse. Thanks for posting the video. I'm off to look for the book, now. :)
I saw MOW's grave at the beautiful Ky Horse Park a few years ago.Tour the place someday and see the museum too.I wasn't able to see Secretariat's as you have to make a reservation to see the grave at the farm and we didn't have time. The farm is two some hrs from Lexington and we weren't gonna be in that area.:(
In my opinion Man O War is the greatest stallion and Ruffian is the best mare. They both rule and I love them both. This has taught me even more about him, thank you.
Along with Secretariat and Eclipse, this is one of the horses I would've loved see run live. He should've ran in the Kentucky Derby, so America would have 12 Triple Crown winners.
Thoroughbred breeders should start breeding sturdy builds and strong legs like Secretariat, Man o' War and all those old time great horses had. Too many breakdowns on tracks these days..
Legend. I am not a horse racing fan but I think pretty much everyone has heard of Man O' War and Secretariat. I heard he had a helluva sense of humor too.
He was the greatest - I have loved this horse all of my life and can't get enough. So, how does one buy the video--I had no idea the History channel had played this.
I explained where I purchased it over a year ago. Please read those comments. You're absolutely right, I have posted other videos from this same DVD. It was a great buy.
As legendary in the states as Phar Lap is here down under, enjoyed this clip very much must buy the book.We all love a Champion don't we?Man O' War Immortal!
Carly, what is this from? ESPN or something? I don't see any of those rare RACING MOW films that I thought ESPN had access to.
Also curious because some of this is misleading. It's safest to say MOW (and others) were left standing at the start in the Sanford, possibly backed up or skewed. Also, "older horses" is misleading as he only ever met Sir Barton once, the only elder. (He did win the JC Stakes for elder, but none entered the race.)
As mentioned above, I posted this video from the History Channel DVD included with the book ¨The Most Glorious Crown.¨ It`s very affordable at 25-30 dollars. Yes, there were more than a few mistakes on the DVD, which is disappointing considering the terrific content.
Only two horses in history had it all...Man O' War and Secretariat. You can't compare other horses to these two legends. They were physical perfection.
One quibble: at 1:29 a horse who's not Man o'War (who had a star AND a stripe) nuzzles a jockey who's not wearing Sam Riddle's silks, yet we're supposed to believe that this is Man o'War.
Good eye; the horse at 1:29 is definitely not Man o' War. It really is a bad error by the producers of this documentary. I never realized that booboo when I was busy posting it. Thank you for noticing.
It is pointless (although at times fun) to argue about who was better than who. Man o' War's impact was felt all over the world. He played a part in Britain finally abolishing the ridiculous Jersey Act. Which basically made almost all US TB's non pure bloods in the British stud book. They finally gave in when US and French breds(they used some US blood) were coming over and winning top races in Britain. Funny thing was that was why they did it the first place, they feared we would clean house.
For many people who know nothing about horse racing, all you have to do is mention the name Man o' War,and they will know exactly who he was. He was an American icon. He was also a very influencial sire(contrary to some who critized Riddle for keeping him a private Stallion),Man o" War's blood is still instrumental in the modern Tb. That along with his race record makes him a true TB God.
Such a beautiful horse!!! What a joy to watch. There is no other animal as graceful and beautiful as a magnificant horse!!!(except my German Shepeard!!):o))))Had to say that he is sitting here right beside me.lol Love this story and video...thank you.
man of war is my horese great great grandpa on his mothers side then on my dads his grandpa was northern dancer. so u would think he would be a great race horse but sadly did not meet the times by 2 seconds. hes beautiful and looks exactly like man of war. i love him though an dhe has the personality and heart of gold. =]
Thank you very much. I just found out my 3 and 4 year olds are descended from Man o' War, so this is thriling! I really did not know that much about him (other than he was a famous horse) before viewing your videos. How cool!
Just think, it will soon turn 100 years since Man O' War became champion and hero and there has been no other horse as close to perfection as Man O' War. Thanks for posting this priceless video.
Alright, I can appreciate everyone's passionate opinion about whether or not Secretariat or Man o'War was better, but that is not what this particular video is about. wow are all these acctuall photos and if they are where did u get them... i love Man O' War he is my favorite horse of all time... oh and where did u get the audio i would love to have it
This video is from the History Channel DVD included with the book ¨The Most Glorious Crown.¨ It`s very affordable at 25-30 dollars. You can buy it online at AmazonDOTcom.
i looked on amazon and i found the most glorious crown but it says that its the story of the triple crown winners ... man o war never won the triple crown
Of course Man o' War didn't win the Triple Crown, but the book has nothing to do with the DVD. Man o' War was included on the DVD because he was a magical horse and an integral part of racing history, hence the bonus History Channel DVD "Win, Place, Show: The History Of Horse Racing".
I agree; the footage is absolutely wonderful. It's from the History Channel DVD included with the book ¨The Most Glorious Crown.¨ It`s very affordable at 25-30 dollars.
How many hands was he? 16.5 or 17??? Sec was only 16.2. Man O War was absolutely beautiful. Love the head shot and the confirmation shot at the beginning.
This is wonderful, new footage. He is SO amazing to look at, majestic! I love the first few seconds, you get a real good luck as he moves and turns his head toward camera, of his muscular shape and form. Beautiful !!
They better make a movie about him.

Of course Man o' War didn't win the Triple Crown, but the book has nothing to do with the DVD. Man o' War was included on the DVD because he was a magical horse and an integral part of racing history, hence the bonus History Channel DVD "Win, Place, Show: The History Of Horse Racing".
Take care.

Hey CF,
How many hands was he? 16.5 or 17??? Sec was only 16.2. Man O War was absolutely beautiful. Love the head shot and the confirmation shot at the beginning.

Hi Shell. Man o' War was also 16.2 hands and weighed roughly 1125 lbs in his prime, while Secretariat was pushing 1200 lbs.
I agree with you, Man o' War looks absolutely stunning; truly a magnificent specimen.
Have a good week!

This is wonderful, new footage. He is SO amazing to look at, majestic! I love the first few seconds, you get a real good luck as he moves and turns his head toward camera, of his muscular shape and form. Beautiful !!
