Any reason you didn't use a relay (mechanical or solid state)?
I guess if you are wanting something like 20A@120V, you'd probably need at least a 9V supply to switch the cheap easily available relays, which adds a bit of complexity if all you have is 3.3-5v.
There are some great solid state relay circuits out there too. 600W isn't too hard. Especially considering you can obviously mill your own boards.
You're right. This was me acting out after taking a trip to home depot. I should have used a relay, and will probably switch to a relay at some point. When I don't have a problem to solve I create one. Ha.
@onshoulders No. You "should have" done whatever you wanted to do. I applaud this solution. The "same way" or "the proper way" aren't always the best. Even if they are, where the fun in that?
I was just curious if there was some underlying reason that you needed a light switch that I was missing. I'm glad there wasn't, and you just went with what you had available.
