  • 1989... best voice ever!!

  • its called puberty

  • it gets slower and slower every time haha

  • Ever since Black album (and when his vocal chords blew out) Jame's voice lacks the power it once had. I still like Metallica but the oomph his voice had is just gone... When I first was getting into Metal, I only liked Metallica because I hated Death Metal growls (not anymore) and vocal stylings, Hetfields voice was the only one that had that same intensity as death metal but you could understand what he was saying. Go listen to Leper Messiah and tell me if he still has that power, aged or not.

  • @koolmaaan I can't stress enough how your opinion is shared with so many people. It sounds like I wrote that comment. The whole Death Metal growl and not liking it then and liking it now. Epitome of a perfect comment.

  • Listen to Dyers Eve, then hate train...you can see a difference, yeah. I still like tallica tho

  • What an amazing collection of shitty, shitty audio samples.

  • 2009 and 2010 dont even have a scream sucks to be 50

  • If I had to choose between having Morgan Freeman's voice or James' Hetfield's voice, I would choose James. Because then I could sing to Sad but True. The only song's I can sing where I sound like James are Orion, Call of Ktulu, and to live is to die. I guess that's good though because to live is to die is my favorite song.

  • @MrLegoking97 I can sing Suicide and Redemption pretty well.

  • @k4den66 Nice.

  • @k4den66 haha, so you sing the guitar part?

  • Comment removed

  • @thedreamportal No, I sing Lars' parts.

  • @k4den66 oh yeah.

  • it isnt the "maturing" of his voice that bothers me it's the change in singing style, he went from being a "thrash" vocalist to a "rock" vocalist (he didnt have to change his style as his voice "matured")

  • @borumir he had to change his singing style since his voice blew out, he ahad to protect it more, but i agree with you, his voice during the justice tour was by far one of my favorite singing voices ever

  • Didn't he blow his voice around 1993-1994? After years of heavy touring for Justice and Black (Binge & Burge tours)? That'd ruin anyones voice, at least temporarily.

  • @toejam119 No, he blew out his voice while recording the song "So What", but what you said would very much take a toll on someone's voice.

  • i would happily take over the vocals for him :D

  • he stopped being all death singing around 98 onwards which is sad

  • Best voice 1989!

  • I like how all the examples kicked ass

  • The fact that he is still kicking ass on stage after 20+ years is impressive enough for me =P

  • Cliff :(

  • he is taking voice training so not to damage his voice

    its in a book...

  • todavia no le cambiaba la voz

    ¡¡¡

  • A lot of his vocal change has come from actual singing lessons he took in the mid nighties. He sings more from his diaphragm and not his throat now. It may now sound as good, but he may not be able to do it at all without it.

  • If only Kurt Cobain were still here with us so we can make a vocal voice change video for him too :'(

  • when u get older your voice changes so then it changes your voice kinda like steven tyler

  • "oh, it´s the age, that´s why" stop making excuses! Dickinson had a WONDERFULL voice till passed 40 (and he´s still has a extremely good one, despite he´s losing it a bit nowadays) listen to Dio! he had quite a good voice when he was 65 (sixty five!) and he was AWESOME till the age of 56, let´s say. Let´s also remember that these two examples had/have a greater challenge when it comes to live shows, which consumes more their voices.

  • @holymariner1 But they are SINGERS!

James old voice was about random radical awesome screaming, thats why he lost it, because someday he would lost it for forcing his voice.

  • @holymariner1 OMG hahaha I wanted to write down the exact same thing. But there are other factors like alcohol and drug abuse that can destroy a voice. Ronnie is amazing, still had the same strength in his 60's as he did in his 30's! That is a professional singer who knows how to use his voice. I don't think James ever thought of himself as an amazing professional singer and I don't think anybody thinks of him that way.

  • '89

  • see he still had some in 2009 but then what happened 2010- present is just bad

  • Metallica still RULES!!! I could act like a man and SHUT UP! I STILL love my METALLICA, I covered my notebooks as such, Pantera, Slayer, lil DimeBagD, awesome bassist. RIP!!

  • 89-91 were the best years of vocal for there style ( in my opinion) but james started to take care of his singing technique during the making of black album.. this is pretty much why his voice went soft and smoother... less throaty in my opinion :/ it sounds alright now but i dont think it will ever suit the old classics like it use to :( \m/ but METALLICAS still awesome live !!!! KILL EM ALL BITCHES R.I.P CLIFF!!!! (sound of pulling teeth)

  • better 1991

  • OH SHIT Lars got much worse

  • @CorazonDelLobo As an absolute metallica fan, I couldn't agree more :c

  • all of you guys talk crap about James and his voice changes but look where he is and look where you are? on youtube because your not as talented so shut up

  • They also play in E Flat these days when they used to play in E, makes a big difference.

  • you dumbasses, its called better production which comes with more money, jame s voice for the most part has never changed. but the ability to record better has changed...

  • @TheDannyhyde

That is bullshit. His voice has changed a lot. Just listen to all the concerts and live bootlegs from the 80's. It has very little to do with production.

  • hetfield suuucks!!!

  • James Heitfield is just a big ol homosexual

  • @DoubleAAmazin3 LOL you're right!

  • yeah, '09 an '10.. what a different

  • '89 fucking fast!

  • @QuarterForce lars and kirk were doing coke... lol...

  • 83 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1:10 WTF is he saying, lol

  • Comment removed

  • My god was Seattle 89 one hell of a show

  • sad but true... but thing is.. that he has to sing this way now.. or he''ll lose his completely being old and stuff...:\

  • yeah when i was 16 i could have done anything with my voice, now im 20 and my voice is just naturally lower, its called getting older

  • 84 to 91 :)

  • I like his voice 84- 86 sounds more raw and angry.

  • wn cualquera que cante por 30 años y casi 3000 conciertos en 1 año tiene la voz pal pico wn ya te quiero ver tu cantando 24 horas seguidas haber como te queda la voz

  • His voice on Kill Em All is the best. A lot may not agree, but that screech that he used to do was ace listen to No Remorse. I think we can all agree that his voice now has gone to the dogs.

  • Too big of a jump. 1991 to 2009 lol?

  • the quality of the recording definitely affects it...89 clearly was the best, i mean, it was their pinacle...no big deal...still good

  • Guitar Tuner! 1984 Em 1990 Em 2009 Ebm or Dm mmmmmm....31 years of work!!!!

  • 89 and 91 are the absolute best

  • What would be if he would roar like in the 80s every evening, 2 hours? He wouldn´t have a voice anymore.

  • jeez that voice has done some work.

  • 1989 the best obviously! Years pass for everyone. Listen to Bruce Dickinson from his early days, his voice is very different, although he is still an amazing singer!

  • is it me or do kirk hammets teeth look like there 5inchs long

  • i think his voice was really good at 1994-1999 period.

  • hehe i love how lars is no more able to play that solo part anymore.

  • actually i like his 2010 voice. It's a pitty they suck so hard today

  • Old James sounds like shit, I miss teenage James voice.

  • It's called vocal maturity. I don't know how old the person who posted this video is, but if you're under...say, 25 years old I'd like you to make a recording of your voice and put the recording somewhere you can find it in 10 years. Listen to it then and see if you don't notice that your own voice has changed since you recorded it.

  • @d3mon64157 I guess you kind of miss the point. Of course my voice would change, I'm not saying it wouldn't nor am I saying the change in Hetfield's voice is good, or bad. This video is just showing the change in his voice, not asking which year is the best, or anything like that.

  • @dOnTtReAdOnMETAL I thought he explained though that the reason his voice changed drastically was because he blew it out while singing in japan i think.

  • @dOnTtReAdOnMETAL Dave Grohl's voice changed even more.

  • @d3mon64157 it called be a poser jajajajaja shitfield suck!!!!

  • @d3mon64157 It's called blowing out my voice and giving up and forgetting about thrash.

  • @d3mon64157 my voice has changed from not being able to hold a tune to actually being able to half metal sing...in the space of 3 years...thanks to me trying to imitate bruce dickinson, jack black, dave mustaine and hetfield :) they're the reason i can actually sing now :D

  • @d3mon64157 Also voice changing is no excuse to become so shitty at what you do.

  • @d3mon64157 yeah but james did blow his voice while recording so fucking what

  • 1:09 Dee de dee due dee de dee that drives you fuckin' mad! xD

  • Sad but True

  • Quality Change AND he is getting old.. ops... mature...

  • Wheres 96-99? I think he had the best voice back then.

  • Why use a picture with Cliff for the 1991 photo? He died in 1986.

  • Hm I have the feeling his roughness decreases since 2008 Oo

  • lol kirk hammet mouth you see at that time 1984 you say where is my horse xD but kirk hammet had a great voice and make great solos along lml

  • this is bs.he screwed up his voice singing so what.hes getting old.check out Rik Emmett of Triumph from their first album to surveillance album.then just a few yrs back they had a reunion show at rocklahoma in 2008.I heard his voice live I about freaked.Wondering what happened to his voice. It comes with age..check out Don Dokken even his voice is fried. the singer in petras voice is fried. If everyone is bitching about voices then SING IT YOURSELF.If you cant do better then SHUT UP!

  • @Voiceinthewoods i dont think his voice is fucking up at all, its just awesome

  • @Voiceinthewoods his voice is pretty good now though

  • james has a really cool guitar in 2010 x)

  • 91

  • After the ...And Justice for All album James went to singing lessons, because he had destroyed his voice by singing songs like So what?

  • by 2020 he`ll sound like willie nelson.

  • This can only mean one thing. James Hetfield died and was replaced with an imposter.

  • 1991 and a picture of cliff xD

  • @Pwnuinwow Haha, woops. Didn't notice that!

  • @dOnTtReAdOnMETAL unless ur telling us something we don't know

  • @Pwnuinwow well he always was with them.

  • back then JH was a teenie, he just became a man !

  • Age is not an excuse. Lemmy from Motörhead sounds still fucking awesome after all these years. Even Bobby Blitz from Overkill sounds totally fucking metal after all these years!

  • 89/2009/2010 are the best in my opinnion

  • yeah he sounds ok now, took him a while to get his old voice back. not bad. it's the late 90's and 2000's where he sucked bad.

  • he actually sings really really good nowdays...he's not using his ''classic macho hetfield'' voice anymore, but that doesn't mean he can't sing nowdays, it's just different approach 'caused by aging and change of technique...

  • Age and ruining your vocal chords twice will do that.

  • Can't hold a tune.

  • i lov 89

  • every time i watch videos like this makes me feel sad i wasn't born earlier to witness the Master of Puppets himself at his prime ,,, that is '89...

  • his voice is fine

  • best 89 - worst 1995 - 2011

  • hetfield cameltoe at 0.56 haha. kidding :P

  • When most rock stars get older, they can't hit the high notes, nor go as fast.

    Perfectly normal.

    Sad, but true.

    (Pun intended.)

  • @georgef551 he a thrash vocalist not a rock star you poser.

  • @VictimRattlehead

Why does he have to be a poser because he clamied that James is a rockstar?

  • @MackanThrashingMad he's a metalhead, a thrasher, vocalist , rhythm guitarist. rock star is a media wrong definition.

  • @VictimRattlehead

I know but why is he a poser cause he said so?

  • @MackanThrashingMad i've just said. if you dont understand i'm not wasting my time finding the right words.

  • from 91 to 2009 lol wtf

  • notice how 480p is worse than 360p LOL

  • He blew his voice after the black album

  • WOW it's so much slower in 2009 then 1989. I knew there was a difference but... this is crazy how slow it is.

  • They slowed the song every year ....

  • That's not a voice change... it's Your Quality Change LOL

  • i like 89 and 91

  • 1989 fuckin PWN the rest

  • '09 is just a slower version of '89

  • everything was at its best in 1989

  • adrenaline starts to flow

    youre thrashing all around

    acting like a maniac !!!!!

  • 89 is best!

  • @zombislayerpwnsnoobs Late 80s and early 90s

  • sound is following age,,, james is getting older,, so his voice,,his stamina cant compared to when he still young/full of energy,,and,,,dont compare people from different generation....that really not fair...how coma U compare lars VS joe Jordison? or james VS someone else younger than him??...come on,,,,grow up man..

  • Obviously 84 sounds better koz that's how it sounds on the record

  • 1984 is the best.

  • 1:34 We all need a hammet? D: :D

  • The 1984 one sounds most how it should IMO.

  • watch?v=knXE_S9a0GU watch this...not only is it fucking epic, but i think that it also shows a part of the reason why he lost his voice.

  • he missed the 92 concert and any other versions inbtween it lazy.....

  • @seloo96 LOL they still played it in the 90's

  • 91 is best.

  • @seloo96 u mean the picture?

  • fuckin sad

  • 1991, picture with Cliff Burton?

  • @Zyklon92

    That's what i thought too...

  • @Zyklon92 NO SHIT do you call urself a metallica fan? -__-

  • His voice changed, get over it already. Music still kicks ass

  • @rutelover exactly and I'm sure all tht alcohol abuse didn't help

  • I still think he sounds the best on Black Album but that may be due to the higher standard of production

His voice didn't really bother me until St. Anger: it was around that time that some live performances just started sounding embarassing. Hence the downtuning...

  • @shwilly they have been using Eb live on every song since the release of load. even though load, reload, garage days, and st anger were the only albums that werent produced in standard E tuning.

  • R.I.P james voice

  • get over it... you expect his voice to stay the same for 30 fucking years?

  • 89 james to 91 is the best but he is still fucking awesome is JAMES FUCKING HETFIELD

  • 89-91 - God James voice

2008-now - OMG James voice come back :D

  • damn you fools

'84 is the most dirty and the most thrash version

    it is just great

  • in this video, definately 91. he sounds like in 89 but with more control over his voice. however i think his voice peaked in 1997

  • My favorite is 91

  • 89 and 91:

    JAMES = GOD

  • in my opinion 1986 was the best, but there isn't any good footage of that year

  • Couldn't you have started with 1983's 'Kill 'Em All' instead of 1984's "crappy bootleg"? :P

OR even a BETTER bootleg from BEFORE 1983...

  • rong pictures to the years

  • Even with the guitars tuned 1 step down it's hard for him,but who cares? JAMES IS A LEGEND \M/ ACTING LIKE A MANIAC,WHIPLASH!!!

  • but metallica still here

    remember that

  • @raw2is2jose thats fucking right

  • Whats the name of the song 2009 style?

  • also gets slower...=(

  • @Alhambrattp Metallica till black album kicks ass.

  • Best 1989 or S&M

  • The problem is he lost his voice somewhere in -89-90 and he had really been singing after that. Before it he was screaming more than singing...and it was way better then....

  • eh he blew out his voice in the 90s and decided not to growl live anymore, so it sounds more melodic

  • yes his voice has changed. it's been nearly thirty years.

  • Yes Jame's voice has changed, but these reasons may contribute to the over 1,600 concerts these have performed in and the grueling tours that they do,or maybe the alcohol.......come on people, everyone ages! Still the greastest Heavy
