Man. I kid you not, to me, Minnie Riperton's voice is THE BEST voice I've ever heard, point blank. The BEST. Better thank MJ's, better than Whitney's (Rest their souls, love them both). It is the best. And it's so sad that the only way I've ever heard it was in a recording . . . I'm 23, but I feel like her voice and songs have so much more meaning than anything out in the mainstream now. RIP MINNIE~
Finding reasons for every bad thing that befalls people is just another type of fetishism, and it's akin to idolatry; these people are so addicted to negativity, they have a 'god' for every misfortune and they're willing to look like the biggest, most craven jackasses just to prove every last one of them is real.
The only reality is altruistic love, as this documentary shows.
How awful that someone would look at this video and not cry but talk in a negative way about this beautiful angel. I just saw her tribute on an old Soul Train Tribute and decided to look her up because I was sad. I have loved her for years. I grew up in the 70's to her music and just melted in it. Her voice was like no other. She was just beautiful and I miss her so much. So she was black and her husband was white. So what. It was love at first sight and they loved each other.
Thank God there are people in the world that show the rest of the world what true love is; it has no boundries, it knows no color, nor social classes, nor weather you are rich or poor. It only knows what it is LOVE, beautiful people produce beatiful spirited children with no prejudice, just love. The people that hate is because of the absence of love in their lives.
@TheQuietStorm25 Luke, unfortunately we can only pray for people who persistently fuel hate and division. Trying to reason with them is futile, and only results in feeding their rage.
@DubUB2 you cnt pray to ah white jesus for me ...or the god of america for me ..its fake ........some damn god all about looooove dats dead cakes................let me ask you this what god are you gone pray to for me ehhh....which one theres many gods out here even gods pplmake up n dey damn heads

black and white it doesent realy matter look at mariah her parents are black and white.... it would be fun to see if minnie was still alive and she gave birth to mariah carey
@chunkiemunkiexd Only because it adds to her legacy that she also was not willing to let boundaries stand in her way to spread Love in the world. Unfortunately, there are still people in the world who seek to limit Love.
As Dr. Martin Luther King speaks so highly, very highly of love, we are all here because of Love; sometimes Love we do not understand but when you are Blessed to Exist in the World, that is Love, you have to catch the sunshine and run with it to where you want; Minnie did that in her music which loves and lives on forever ...
I know it's been many years since Minnie lost her life to cancer but stories like this makes me press even harder to be a great Mother everday, she inspires me and we never met! Continue to rest in peace, Love U and all u stood for.
My heart broke when I saw this clip. Watching someone you love pass away in your arms has to be the most painful experience for a human being. My heart ached for Richard, Maya and Mark. You can see the love that Richard has for her, it will always be there. I hope they all remember that she is a beautiful angel watching over them all, especially over her children and grandchildren. Love is a powerful force and it will never die. RIP Minnie. Gone but never forgotten.
I just don't understand how in 2011, interracial love is still an issue. Richard clearly loved and still loves Minnie. Someone please explain how skin color plays a factor in that.
I can't believe some of these posts..making this about race when you have a man and woman who TRULY LOVED one another! The love shown in just a few clips was very touching and sweet. The focus should be on this amazing woman's life and talent, not on black v. white.
@inuyashafan1235 from what it looks like in a couple of the wedding pics that the priest who married them was white, so it wasn't that they COULDN'T get married, they very much could, it's just at that time it was a little unheard of as it is now in 2010 its so common now...i think minnie and richard were a beautiful couple. Richard was a handsome man, I'm a black woman and I find him sexy, shoot if i was minnie i would marry him too but they were a very lovely couple though he really loved her
@inuyashafan1235 they were able to get married just like any normal couple were at that time, it's just at that particular time there were some places that had a thing against it, and some that weren't against it, just like with the gay marriage thing thats happening now, there are some places that will do it, and some that wont because of their own personal predjudice...
@whayes8084 why do you hate to see white men with black women?, what difference does it make, a woman is a woman, and a man is a man. and just out of pure respect for a lovely woman who lost her life to CANCER, keep your ignorant thoughts to yourself. It's one thing to have a preference, whatever that may be, but to say "hating to see one color with another is just flat out wrong" I'm going to need you to stop thinking backwards honey, this is 2010 not 1943
@Tgarland84 "keep your ignorant thoughts to yourself"
So in the alternate universe that you dwell only your opinion should be stated? The internet is a breeding ground for differences of opinion. If you can't handle it become an amish woman. I don't have to agree with interracial dating, just like you don't have to agree with me. Grow a spine and go back to believing in your made up white "god" named Jesus.
@whayes8084 WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOU STUPID FUCK-TARD!i can say whatever in the hell i would like, so how about this, if your ass dont like other peoples opinions, then maybe your dumb ass shouldn't be on youtube PERIOD! you apparently half assed read my comment, and already your ready to fire off without fully understanding what you said was wrong, and the fact that you put it on this video was wrong, it was disrespectful to Minnie!
@whayes8084 , and what in the hell are you talking about believing in my made up white "god" named Jesus! your talking like im one of these white racists on here, when if you had bothered to look at my profile, im very much black! WHY DONT YOU JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP, YOU DONT EVEN MAKE SENSE, YOU BRINGING GOD INTO A CONVERSATION THAT IS TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE! YOUR AN IDIOT!
I usually hate to see white men with black women. But honestly when I watched this on TvOne you could tell they were madly in love with each other. Cant hate.

Some of these negative comments on this video is very unecessary and disrespectful to this woman. SHE DIED OF FUCKING BREAST CANCER PEOPLE!!!! wake the fuck up!!! our Mothers, Sisters, Daughters....are dying from this to this day! and all yall wanna talk about is fucking race smdh...instead of criticizing this brilliant, beautiful woman and you dont even know her, why dont yall turn all that hatin ass energy to findind a damn cure for this disease thats killing off women!
why are yall still debating over this black and white crap?! LOVE IS LOVE!!!! Love over shadows everything! and they are a perfect example of what love is. Back and those days you couldn't just openly broadcast is as loosely as you can now, but they loved each other that tough that what anyone had to say didn't matter
Just like dianna she went for the white boy .I still love her cause we're from the same place. You know her knight in shinning armor fantasy.A jew in the music industry
@ronmartn i dont see anyhting wrong in that doesnt matter to me im mean my dad was with a white woman and shes kind to me plus i have sisters who r half white.
I wasn't too familiar with the life of minnie riperton, but I loved the songs that I knew of hers. After watching her on unsung, it just gave me a greater appreciation of this woman and her talent. I couldn't help but shed tears when I watched and I still do at times listening to her music.
@mushroomscouser AMEN, love is a many splendid things & we all should not have to be judged if we love a person who isn't our own race. We should be free to love a person because what counts in on the inside. WOW, this story touches my heart because I was young when she died but, I remember a mom gone from her young children & husband. My sister passed on 4-23-2004 & left a 9 & 16 year old. I thank God for the 40 years. Don't let a nything or anyone stop you from loving. Blessing to all.
@MBOYA22 You are a warm soul. I wish more black men could appreciate the Love I have for my wonderful black lady. We should all be free to Love whoever we choose. Increase the Love in the world.
@blutsturmer Its all in being realistic friend. While I believe many black women have been programmed not to truly support their black Kings, I truly love them for their strength and beauty. I am very intelligent so I know that their are others of other races who see what I see. I am hoping to See God in Heaven one day racism wont be the reason why I dont. I believe in love between A Man and a Women regardless of color. I didnt always feel this way. I only date black women but only God knows.
@MBOYA22 It is not programming that allows a person freedom. It is a freedom to choose ones own happiness. Many black women will never know Love or companionship because they are waiting for a "good" black man. This day will never come for some black women. There are 1.4 million more black women than black men. The numbers are just not realistic. Each should seek their own happiness and Love, by their own definition. Peace to you brother and Love to all.
I havent dated a white man before but i've been strongly considering it...i think its good to think outside of the box...and do something new...Minnie was long dead before i was even born,,,but my mom likes her and plays her music...and i really love her, and her music,,it's something addicting about her...makes you want to really get to know who she was
i think its absolutely dumb that yall are on this black and white bullshit still. men are men black or white, they have the same thing...they do the same thing. so seriously what is the point in making racial comments??...personally I think Minnies husband is sexy as hell..even at his age now...he's a very attractive man...shit i would holla at him to if i was around in the 70's and 60's
No thats the dude who used to sing with her back in the days!!! They were in a group called Rotary Connection. Thats where she met her husband. He was in the group too!!!
I wish I could have seen this whoe episode. My cable company doens't carry TV One. It's so sad. I know what it feels like to lose someone to cancer. My dad last year. June 10 would be his 59th birthday. I wish someone would find a cure for cancer. On a lighter note. Marc is looking handsome. Nice eyes.
i shouldve said, i dont like white men, SEXUALLY. i didnt complete that. serously, her husband still is fine. anyway, its sad. somebody finally spoke up about her music not being more that what it was. come to my garden is the cd i listen to to get vocal inspiration. ive taken a lot of her licks, adlibs, runs, riffs and all that jive <---haha. shes great
i dont like white men, but her ex husband was fine. something about him. anyway, i just watched this special. they played minnie. COME TO MY GARDEN- a vocal masterpiece didnt see the time of day. she used to sing her heart out and only 3 songs went mainstream. its sad
"Soul is not a thing, but a quality or a dimension of experiencing life and ourselves. It has to do with depth, value, relatedness, heart and personal substance."- Thomas Moore.
Both Richard and Minnie had that in abundance (and probably why you think he's fine :)

Both Richard and Minnie had that in abundance (which explains why you think he's fine despite his cultural background :)
Yes, That is Mrs. Thelma. Minnie's sister Clarice looked just like their mother. Mrs. Thelma was a very sweet and generous woman jsut like Minnie was.
what a beautifull flower that was planted here for us on this earth to see to hear & to love laughter she gave music she made as her gift she planted seeds that where watered by her love her children and those seeds will continue to grow she left us with apart of her "memories " with love & song she came from Gods seed and when the time was right to be picked God wanted his flower back but one day we who believe will see her bloom again in heaven one sweet day

She had an incredible voice and talent. She also had love and family. The rest of these posters need to have a seat.

black..white...love is love. Life is too short for any of us to get caught up in differences. All our blood is the same colour.

@MBOYA22 I agree. I just hate when black women push it in our faces sometimes. Those I do not agree with. This man in the video is truly generous.

@MBOYA22 You are a warm soul. I wish more black men could appreciate the Love I have for my wonderful black lady. We should all be free to Love whoever we choose. Increase the Love in the world.
blutsturmer 5 months ago
@blutsturmer Its all in being realistic friend. While I believe many black women have been programmed not to truly support their black Kings, I truly love them for their strength and beauty. I am very intelligent so I know that their are others of other races who see what I see. I am hoping to See God in Heaven one day racism wont be the reason why I dont. I believe in love between A Man and a Women regardless of color. I didnt always feel this way. I only date black women but only God knows.
MBOYA22 5 months ago

Wow, Umm...Too much of a spirit to linger. Iike that one!
Get what he is saying. Our Spirits r eternal and flesh isn't. That's why it's important to live as if where we r going is more important!

Nice eyes.

"Soul is not a thing, but a quality or a dimension of experiencing life and ourselves. It has to do with depth, value, relatedness, heart and personal substance."- Thomas Moore.
Both Richard and Minnie had that in abundance (and probably why you think he's fine :)

In the picture with Maya, is that Minnie's mother? Are her mother and father still with us?
mmemmorry 2 years ago
Yes, That is Mrs. Thelma. Minnie's sister Clarice looked just like their mother. Mrs. Thelma was a very sweet and generous woman jsut like Minnie was.
LuvNU75 2 years ago
Did you know them? No one answered the question if Mr. and Mrs. Riperton are still alive. I read where her sister Clarice passed away.

what a beautifull flower that was planted here for us on this earth to see to hear & to love laughter she gave music she made as her gift she planted seeds that where watered by her love her children and those seeds will continue to grow she left us with apart of her "memories " with love & song she came from Gods seed and when the time was right to be picked God wanted his flower back but one day we who believe will see her bloom again in heaven one sweet day
