Joni is Goddess. I love her and her music; it has accompanied me for the last 42 years. The garbage that they are pushing now is not music and certainly not art; it's manufactured noise produced to make money.
@HumongousJohnson I appreciate your sentiment, but don't write off contemporary music. Your phrase "it's manufactured noise produced to make money" is exactly what our parents said about Joni Mitchell. Every generation has its wondrous talents and its poseurs, and remember, for our generation there were 100 Andy Kims and Gary Pucketts for every Joni Mitchell. Check out Kathleen Edwards, Sia, Tori Amos, Over the Rhine, and many other contemporary artists. Discover new horizons!
Joni Mitchell is such an inspiration. She never asked for any one to pay attention to her like "artists" do nowadays, she just gave her heart and soul with her music and people loved her for loving what she did. I hope eventually more musicians will be like her. You go Joni!
One of my proudest moments was listening to "For the Roses" at age 15 (having never heard of Joni), and just KNOWING that this woman was for real, a rare talent, and a genius. I'm 32 now, and I've heard every fucking songs she has done, and there literally isn't a bad one. She rivals (if not surpasses) Dylan in lyric writing, and competes with opera when it comes to emotional impact. One of the all time greats, in this writers opinion.
This is probably the best video of Joni singing I've ever seen. You feel as if you are sitting there on the river bank with her listening to her play. I wish there were more videos of her singing her music like this one!
@Mousey77027 I'm getting this way too. As I learn more, and as I just fell for someone, she is right there singing in my head, songs I hadn't heard since I was a girl. I feel so lucky... you must be too.

.... oh lord, just get her beautiful smile and simple joy , her unguarded generosity of spirit at 1.46 - she just floors me! She's like that river and the bright day around her - an extension of it all - just simple, shining flowing joy ...........
... far as I'm concerned Joni just embodies everything that women of a younger, manufactured generation are not, bless em. Such vain n shallow pop wannabees just have no clue as to the degree of self sacrifice and focus it takes to achieve such noble standing.

Again, well said. She is a gift from above (whatever/wherever that may be). True music flows from the spirit within, there is nothing deliberate about it-as we see here. Even "mistakes" while playing are beautiful and part of the experience. Pure benevolence.
I had to laugh. Yr so right and you write like you really mean it.
"You can't stop her". No, you can't.
This is a twisty complex tune which is completely mysterious. I've been playing guitar for 30 years now and I know that I will NEVER write a song like this or play with such subtlety. This is truly emotional music.
When I first began listening to Joni, my family asked me if I was "ok". So many find her music depressing or melancholy in some way, and I never have. She tells of the reality of life in a way that appeals to those who have felt it in a fashion similar to the way she has. I know of no other musician who plays from their heart the way she does, except for Nick Drake...and this used to be "pop" music, along with so many other geniuses. I am 30, and I regret my generation.
No. I think she was always considered unique, as was Nick Drake. I'm much older than you, almost as old as Joni, but I agree. This is not the music of her 'generation', or of yours. This is OUR music. Melancholy? It celebrates the human experience against a natural world that often doesn't, being much larger and mostly nonliving. Like Drake, I think every note she strings and plucks celebrates our place in the universe (our real place). Thats not depressing. Indeed, its almost defiant.
@coldoldrice Hi...great comment. She is all those things You say. I'd urge You not to regret Your generation. There are Joni's in there too. I've noticed many great people in Your crowd...You guys are great in Your own way. In fact, many can be found here in Youtube land....Blessings, Michael
@coldoldrice It's like you say it's from the heart and emotional, I connect to songwriters like this because I too have a heart and am emotional. People have said it to me because I like country music, not modern country music perse but the old stuff and there like that stuff is so depressing and gloomy and i'm like no its uplifting because they are expressing things we all come up against, its spiritual music
Pure majors are like major colors; they evoke pure well-being. Anybodys life at this time has pure majors in it, given, but theres an element of tragedy. No matter what your disposition is, we are air breathers, and the rain forests coming down at the rate they are, theres just so much insanity afoot. We live in a dissonant world. It doesnt make sense to make music in such a dissonant world that does not contain some dissonances. - Joni
Listening some time ago to her younger version of "The Last time I saw Richard." a friend told me to try a relatively speaking, newer version of hers. Now normally I dislike it when even the original artist starts mucking about with what I consider a perfect song. Well . . . wasn't I surprised! Her voice was very different and music very soulful jazzy but, Mein Gott und den himmel! It was like being rocked in me mum's arms again. Now I've 2 Jonies to listen to, instead of the one. Sweet! :o)o:
I feel like she wrote this song for me--hitting the highway at 3 am Sunday mornings, in the summer time, home-bound or still road-bound--it didn't matter--I was just so perfectly free in those moments, in the dark, with the dawn barely breaking in the rear-view mirror.
once in a while, i will sit and listen to my joni, my beautiful angel, and cry to her music. For some reason, her sound makes me sweetly melancholy. I am happy in this state and do it for myself every once in a while. Oh to find someone who would sing me to sleep like this.
je suis tres triste. une fois j'ai adore cette femme mais aujourdhui j'ai appris que elle a vendu sa fille quand elle avait besion des drouges. peut etre que elle prenait de l heroine.
That's a gem. Paardewijf! That's funny. I once heard Joni described as a cross between a carthorse and Garbo, so I guess you're of roughly like mind. But what does 'naatje' mean?
Joni is the antithesis of today's processed pop and style-over-substance approach in the music industry. Watching how good Joni plays and sings makes you realise how bad the state of music is right now, where true musicians and artists are few and far between.
There's still a lot of great newer talent out there today. Check out the coffee house series, house concerts, and other smaller venues. Sometimes we think all the new music is bad because we see so much of the overhyped, mass marketed crap (Britney Spears, et. al.). That stuff is strictly for kids. And it's not all there is.
Funny thing is, that's what people said about the Beatles, the Stones, Hendrix, and the rest of their generation -- they were the "shit" that no one could believe anyone would listen to when there were great artists like Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo to listen to.
Good point. Yes, there are some legitimate artists out there getting a lot of hype. Not everyone who brings in serious money is a poor musician. John Mayer and John Legend may stand the test of time. As for Britney and most of the others, well....
Just let this one into your mind right now and see what your heart and mind do with it for the next two weeks. How deep and wide are we humans? Joni helps me see.
That's funny! One little wrong note on 1:43. I've never heard her making mistakes, it's always so perfect! Nice to know that even the BEST make little mistakes, she can laugh about it herself. It's so pure!! :) She's my musical mum!
Joni is Goddess. I love her and her music; it has accompanied me for the last 42 years. The garbage that they are pushing now is not music and certainly not art; it's manufactured noise produced to make money.

Who Dordsediekie or me? I wasn't, btw, merely passing on a comment from elsewhere.

That's a gem. Paardewijf! That's funny. I once heard Joni described as a cross between a carthorse and Garbo, so I guess you're of roughly like mind. But what does 'naatje' mean?
fendweller 2 years ago
It means you're an idiot for dissing on Joni's looks.

Joni is the antithesis of today's processed pop and style-over-substance approach in the music industry. Watching how good Joni plays and sings makes you realise how bad the state of music is right now, where true musicians and artists are few and far between.
BravoGustavo 2 years ago 21
You're exactly spot on.
It's too bad. But boy are we lucky to have Joni and her peers. (Neil Young, Paul Simon, Beatles, Hendrix etc)
It's amazing to me that anyone even listens to the shit that's out there today.
Especially when there's such great talent to compare it to.
DaveKear 2 years ago 11
There's still a lot of great newer talent out there today. Check out the coffee house series, house concerts, and other smaller venues. Sometimes we think all the new music is bad because we see so much of the overhyped, mass marketed crap (Britney Spears, et. al.). That stuff is strictly for kids. And it's not all there is.
LAdave65 2 years ago
Funny thing is, that's what people said about the Beatles, the Stones, Hendrix, and the rest of their generation -- they were the "shit" that no one could believe anyone would listen to when there were great artists like Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo to listen to.
OldDunc 2 years ago
Good point. Yes, there are some legitimate artists out there getting a lot of hype. Not everyone who brings in serious money is a poor musician. John Mayer and John Legend may stand the test of time. As for Britney and most of the others, well....

That's funny! One little wrong note on 1:43. I've never heard her making mistakes, it's always so perfect! Nice to know that even the BEST make little mistakes, she can laugh about it herself. It's so pure!! :) She's my musical mum!
