I perform many C-section every year ( about 50-60 ) and, by my experience, the 2 key factors making them successful are:
1 - Duration of surgery: If you're able to perform the C-section under 40 minutes time ( from the anestesia injection to the last stitch ), the successful rate boost hugely up.
2 - Blood : Less blood out the vascular sistem, less adesion and less chance of peritonitis.
And use only instruments you really need. I never use needle holder; wasting a lot time using them.
Why is it that you can do a surgical procedure in the abdominal cavity on a cow on an open meadow with a bare minimum of a/ntisepsis and the animal does fine afterwards, while when you'd do it on a human this way the poor critter would die of septic shock before the week's over?
If the calf is dead, You got a good chance to pull it out natural way, when You first push back the front legs, force out the head alone, and decapitate the embryo. Then repose the rest of the embryos body, pull the legs out again. The greatest diameter of a calf is front legs plus head. Try to pull out the embryo now. By this way I avoided several C-sections.
@TheVethunter True. Have done it many many times. But as you tell me I see you are a beginner. That is theory but a C-section i make it in 1hr. No forceps, no knives, no cutters, no excessive blood. Good try but experts know what to do.
@cartonvera I respect Your decision for C-section. My proposal is no theory. I have done that at least a dozen times avoiding complete embryotomia or C-section. And please do not call me a beginner without knowing my experience.
most of the time when that happens they are normally dead or die after, i had a cow who got in calf when she was 3 months old the same happened to her baby was too big couldnt give birth we couldnt give her a c-section it was almost dark and did not have ne light so had to put her down, we did not let her get in calf so young we had a bull from nextdoor that jumpped the fence to get to her so we could not stop it
Is this Surgery worth it, you know what I mean ?

The calf was dead because the farmer bred the heifer too young, she was not large enough to carry a calf and give birth, shame on him!

@JudgeSK did you go to the farmer and ask him? or how did you get your info? you really can't judge based on others mistakes

I was wondering why you didnt do a foetotomie it was already known the calf was dead? Would be less risk for the cow i think.
