I am a huge fan of Tommy Bolin but this is kind of tragic. He is perspiring heroin and booze at this point. This is like a video of the best Deep Purple tribute band ever.
MrTMarshy, Yes, you are most correct...this was one of the shows where Bolin could barely move his fret hand. Look and listen to the solo (if you can call it that) on this tune- Hiway Star. He barely moves his hand at all. He shot up some dope, fell asleep with his arm folded behind his back. Woke up after several hours of NO blood circulation. Wham-instant paralysis!!!!!!!!!
Tommy Bolin just can't cut it can he? Was this the tour when his hand was paralysed? Generally, I think this is a bit embarrassing. I agree with what people have said here - Bolin, Hughes and Coverdale don't do much for the mk2 stuff. Should have stuck to mark 3/4...
I'm a very very big Deep Purple fan ever...... but in this Live Album, in this formation.... DP looks like an amateur band.....very poor....... Mark II is the best ever.....
You people are brutal-sad story about Bolin-this is history...take it or leave it-your negativity will eat you alive-go watch something you can be positive about-didn't your mother teach you that? If you do\n't have anything nice to say-shut up!
After ya do it in front of 20,000 people, have an account $50, Mil. Then say, "Oh dear, how awful. Listen to Made in Japan!" Synthesizer was a new word in 1975 most folks today wouldn't even recognize devices used in 1975. Imagine standing in front of the stage, watching a guitarist using a bow intended for a Bass Violin on his guitar to produce that long low organ-synthesis that seems to run right through you, while singing. It took work, a lot of work, yet they pulled it off. ;-)
@MOSKII58 Bolin nodded out from smack and slept on his left arm in a weird position for like 12 hours totally cutting off the circulation. He could not fully open his hand - hence the basic bar chord playing - He couldn't form them because his arm and hand were whacked out.
Respond to this video... Bolin had a different guitar for each song - each tuned differently so he could bar the very rudiments of Blackmore's intricate playing. He played as well as he could in that condition. He was actually a good guitar player and this is poor example but sadly the best video one of this grouping. He died not long after
Don't forget they all were on very dirty stuff, I mean cocain, heroin, they did not know where they are! You can say "It's not this and it's not that" Whatever, the band went through various changes, but still it is the rockest band in the world. Check out Black Country Communion, that's something too. PS: Don't respond, I won't respond
@5jerry1 they are having fun instead of singing AND having fun. Thats how you lose power and concentration for good singing. But if they are serious they are amazing, especiali David and Glenn
After reading so many negative comments,I think alot of people have never been to a live concert before? You guys that grew up with MTV are used to seeing and hearing pristine performances on TV. Real LIVE concerts aint like that. Purple had bad nites like everyone else, but they were the KINGS of live concerts in 70's. Stones,Aerosmith,Who,I've seen em all live, and they are terrible. If you didnt know the songs, you wouldnt know what they were singing. DP is great here, absolutely great!
Bolin (RIP) played virtually just one note the whole solo. They should 've got Ace Frehley in, he could have done better. And Glenn Hughes - wailing unintelligibly. I think the people climbing on stage probably wanted to turn the microphones off. Lord and Paice playing alone would have been a huge improvement. Tragic end to a great band.
I liked the album "Come Taste the Wine." Wasn't that one with Tommy on it? Oh that revolving door of a band Deep Purple! I agree that Coverdale was too heavy handed on most of the DP material. I won't even mention his WS career... Let's just be glad Ritchie left and formed Blackmore's Rainbow! First concert I ever went to :)
It's one thing for Coverdale to butcher his "own" material, such as Burn and so on... But now I perfectly understand why they never did "Child in Time" with this lineup....
Fucking crap. Bolin couldn't play for shit. Coverdale proved to be a wanker with poxy Whitesnake. Just aweful. Made in Japan. BEST live album by anyone ever.
This is when Deep Purple were morphing in a blue-eyed soul band with Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale. Ritchie Blackmore got fed up and left - and who could blame him. This sucks!!!
Possibly the worst rendition with the worst guitar solo in history. Now I now why Jon Lord was so despondent as they toured - "destroying Deep Purple's reputation everywhere we went". I know Bolin & Hughes were coked up. Shame they didn't go to another band and f*ck that up! The audience deserve better than this sh!t.
@Rammbock well, its pretty simple...you didn't give an argument so why should i ground one? afaik hughes got far one of the most brightest vocal techniques in the rock history since he is way old and stills sings awesomely. and for the record i'm a singer too so....on the other hand if you take, lets say, gillan or coverdale or plant or almost every other rock vocalist they actually definitely shouldn't sing. listening to gillan nowadays is something really, REALLY awful.
1. "Hughes is an awful singer" = subjective OPINION.
2. "You know shit about singers" = JUDGEMENT of potential objective FACTS (you need arguments).
3. OPINION =/= FACT.
Got it?
On another note: Hughes is a nobody, only DP fans and die hard rock freaks know him. If you speak about vocal techniques... Pavarotti, Shajarian, Tom Jones etc. are truly special singers. Hughes is not even as powerful and distinguished as Gillan in the 70ies. Above-average, catrate like.
@leostera But let's not argue about opinions here. I totally agree with you about Gillan. He should have stopped the moment he could not sing Child in Time properly anymore. The whole lot of Deep Purple seem to have missed that dignified moment a band, a TV series, an athlete, politician etc. should stop. They just keep playing on and on with almost no creativity left. It's a sad thing to watch once celebrated people degrade themselves. The problem is: hard rock fans never grow up.
Oh dear, oh dear. If you want to hear a ruined Highway Star, then you got it now. I don't know if Tommy was high and couldn't play the solo correctly or he wasn't good enough... but this isn't what I want to hear.
those die hardfans doesnt troubled always deep purple is great highway star with bolin is great too he does , dont forget it he is model in the rock music
IMO it's quite a good interpretation. coverdale is really good at this gig (he is better here than he was in 1974), hughes is obviously drunk, only the guitar solo sucks ass (compared to ritchie's), but the rest of it is good and powerful.
I agree! Tommy was a great guitarist, but he and Hughes ruined Deep Purple at the time with their drug and alcohol problems. Thank God we got Whitesnake and the MK.II reunion in '84. Anyway this was great. 'Come Taste The Band' is a good album, but the MK.4 lineup was never made to last. Great on record, not so great live...unfortunatly.
