Dawkins never said there weren't other reasons. He just cited the two most common reasons for doing so. He also made no ethical judgment for doing so.

I'm sure someone has already brought this up, but Dawkins explains this further in his book "The God Delusion". There IIRC he refers to adoption as a "blessed mistake". He believes that the urge to adopt is an accidental effect of the urge to care for one's own children. This makes it a 'mistake' in the same way that sex for nonreproductive reasons is a 'mistake' because the urge to do it is a side effect of the urge to have sex for reproductive reasons.

You should explain why he's saying this, he's not saying that it's a human misstake as in that it's a bad act of a human being to adopt a child. He's saying that by nature we're not supposed to adopt.
When we adopt we're not letting natural selection go on as it should. In the animal world this child would die because it parents did.
But we humans adopt this orphan child. thus that's artificial selection in a way. And that's "wrong" in the way i mentioned above.

You can't talk about natural selection when it might be human selection; i.e somebody killed the parents. Second, almost anything we do goes against natural selection. Like curing diseases. And building homes instead of letting 'nature' decide who survives or not. Or using fire to survive in cold temperatures.
