  • that tang has an insane down bend

  • Ah, don't wear shorts when fencing :)

And yes, fencing, with FIE equipment, if you want to be committed to the sport and compete as private club members instead of just school club members are pretty expensive. I know I spent thousands of dollars on new swords (i personally used bf. much sturdier.) and helmets, lame, chest protector, knickers, etc.

  • does it hurt

  • @masterofcola only if you dont parry or the other guy doesn't hit properly :)

  • saw this guy last weekend!

  • gr8 :)

  • I so badly wanna do fencing lol looks pretty hectic XD

  • same! hope its not too expensive...

  • This Benoit fellow looks very young.. he should be some 28 years old, if this video was made the same year as posted.. looks much younger

  • I give lessons with my adult athletes in thier shorts and t-shirt. I got taught by this method too and as long had control of the blade and distant it worked fine.

I always enjoy fencing coaches at work, you can learn so much.

  • Epée or Foil?

  • Epee.

  • What do FIE regs have to do with lessons?

As someone wrote below, don't apply your three-hour beginner's class experience to what you are seeing here...

  • -As a coach you get given a rating from 1-5 (In GBR anyway) and If you are 5 in al 3 weapons you re a proffessor of fencing.

-That is not the kind of lesson that anyone here (except me :P) would ever get. This isn't cos it's complicated but because it is fast. Benoit is an excellent fencer. I am a foilist but recognise good fencingI am going to be in the British Youth Championshipd for all three weapons very soon :P.

  • Aye, my old coach was Prof Bert Bracewell! Yeah, him!! Haha, but now I have another who actually has few enough pupils to care for me :P

I qualified for the U18s Men's Epee BYC for East Scotland but I had to pull out cos I dislocated my wrist :(

And yes, if you're good then you don't need protection in personal lessons - I don't wear any but the mask but mine aren't quite as fast as this!

  • I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I would like to contribute to the discussion about correct kit when training. There is nothing wrong whatsoever when training to wear only, lets say, a mask, glove, t-shirt, shorts and shoes. Generally one shouldn't get injured if it's only a lesson or generic training. I think the issue here is that this appears to be more like a bout than a casual lesson and personally I'd feel far safer wearing full kit if I were the student.

  • It's not a bout. It's a lesson between a world-class coach and his world-class pupil. They've probably been working together for a long time, and this is where it has led. They can do it this speed, yet it is still just practice. And yes it is safe for them. If it looks dangerous that is because people don't have the requisite experience.

  • I make my beginning fencers wear full kit in lessons because I like to hit them if they don't parry properly. The advanced people can do lessons in t-shirts.

  • omg lol i love the people critiquing one of the greatest French Fencers alive... please, keep what you learned in your three hour class to yourself when talking about a professional

  • ya i think he is, the bell on the epee is supposed to keep your arm from being hit, but like that its an easy target : /

  • @ wellitsali & andreraf

the high guard position is characteristic of a lot of french epee fencing. i developed it myself when i was there for two years.

it came from my coach's preference for direct straight counter attacks in line - rather than full classical parries as in the german/hungarian style. the high angled guard position allows you to move directly forward along the arm to hit. watch how smoothly and quickly janvier lands his lunge attacks along the line in the final two attempts.

  • si it jsut me or is the guy in white have a bad hand posture.?

  • not a bad lesson/practice. but i've seen and been in better

  • No need to write lesson/practice, it is a lesson. If you're from Canada then I find it very difficult to believe you've had a better lesson than this. Sicard is a great coach. He is better than both the current and previous national epee coach for Canada (Salomon and Konczalski).

  • Most of the comments here appear to be by people with little to no experience in fencing. This is a great lesson.

  • i agree but have seen better

  • OK guys maybe should known that maître sicard is one of the master of the french national school.

He has trained fencer like Flessel.

The guy is F.Janvier a member of the french national team.

  • lol, sicard's footwork is pretty bad yea XD and they're not wearing proper clothing and i haven't even started fencing

  • lol, professor of fencing eh? did he have a hard time making a proper living?

  • its a coach not a proffesor like in a lab lol

  • I'm appalled at the blatant disregard for safety.

  • Excellent!

  • I fence without my jacket. You're fencing for an hour straight with no breaks. It keeps you cooler.

  • It could have been idiot if it was'nt the French team's coach with one of the best french fencer!

They can control their actions, I'm not in the french team but I often take a lesson without jacket, only with under-plastron, glove and mask(and I'm a women...)!

When you're in national team you take very long and hard lesson as a consequence you can't wear all your equipement!!

  • It's still a stupid idea to do that. Many people have been badly injured from this sort of thing. The slightest slip of the coaches feet for example could cause him to hit his student harder than he intended. plus it would invalidate any insurance! Absolute minimum in the UK is plastron, glove and mask (and chest protector for women) and U16s must wear full kit. breeches dont have to be worn for lessons but are recommended for epee lessons!

  • Many? Fencing has one of the best safety records of any sport. Golf is statistically a more dangerous sport!

  • @indy2512 Dangerous is when you fence vs novices who have improper technique and no accuracy.

  • @indy2512 there are more golfing people, IDIOT!!!!!!!!! Learn MATHAMATICS!!!!!!

  • If the rules have not changed the black is reserved for the coach. What idiot coach would ever let a student fence in short sleeve T-Shirt? A small accident can cause injury.

  • are you an expert?

  • I an not an expert. I have learnt swordsmanship from my grandfather since 12 years old and have fenced for about 30 years.

  • Erm, the French national épée coach. That's what idiot. I would be more worried if he couldn't control his actions such that a student would really be in danger.

  • Sure, because no fencer has ever made a mistake.

  • not bad.

  • No, many women fence today.

In the 19th Century, there was no sport fencing, for men or women. Women did take fencing lessons back then, often in a skirt and not with other men students, only their coach. They did not duel as much as the men did either. But nowdays women fight men in fencing a lot. And they can beat them too, and get beaten.

  • Is Fencing only a mens sport?

  • No, it's a women sport too!

  • Someone said it was, and I thought it was unfair, so I just wanted to know (this is still same 1985BFS person)

  • Here this happen?
