As much as there are those who want to retire this aircraft in favour of something more modern, the truth is that this is the best platform for this type of operation. Turbo prop engines are high-performance yet allow for slower cruising speeds and precise control of the aircraft during fire missions. The preference would be engine power plant upgrades, re-enforcing or replace existing fuselages, and improvement to their weapons systems. Like the A10, there is no substitute for this aircraft.

The C-17 as a gunship sounds like a good plan. However, the C-17 was designed to transport heavy objects at a higher rate of speed and altitude than the C-130. You need a platform that can remain steadily hovering at slow speeds around a killbox. The USAF has planned to supplement the AC-130 with a C-27J Spartan for higher priority missions. The thing about the C-130 is that despite being an old airframe, new versions are being built as we speak.The USAF will probably use a newer C-130J airframe

If moisture and electronic sensors were involved I could understand in some situations to tap something like that, but not this situation. What I think bothers me though, is this Howitzer isn't firing any faster automatically than it would manually since they have to manually load it anyways, and the news makes it sound like 'OMG the gun is borken this plane is falling apart! the problem is the C-130 is a very old platform, they need to make an AC17, jet engines and a much newer frame to work with.
i think they should make a boeing 747 gunship, 5 105 cannons 10 40mm boffors AA cannons and maybe an A-10's 30mm cannon or 2? sounds like a beast! the AC-747 make it happen!

I wouldn't necessarily have been seen on radar thanks to the already stated jamming that the US was performing at the time. Very few people would actually know all details of the mission.
@swertinge07 Being an AC-130U Loadmaster, i can say from experience that the 130 is the best choice of airframe for the missions we ask of a gunship. When you can land a big ass 747 on a street in Baghdad, come and talk to me about changing frames.. 130's all day!

The C-130 is one of the most successful, versatile and economical airborne platforms in our fleet- it has been in service in one form or another in the US military since 1953, the only aircraft that is close in age is the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress- I doubt the engineers that created these planes envisioned them still being in service after 60 years, but that's how we used to build things in America...

@13thmistral A project in the works is a Converted C-5, the AC-5 Super Spooky. and the same thing with a C-17 Globe master, dubbed AC-17 Spooky II. Both involve engine retrofits to allow it to fly slower than normal limits. This unfortunately causes higher noise and fuel consumption rates. Currently being tested at white sands proving grounds. I think ordering new AC-130U's would be cheaper and more effective.

@13thmistral theres already desighns for a new transport carrier to replace the older c5s which were use for the old m60 tank.. we dont use m60s any more so switching c5 to a gun ship might be of better use for it!

The AC130 was only a concept in the Vietnam war with a DC transport plane that had a "few" upgrades of 4 mini guns and starlight scopes. Now the grandson of that is the AC 130 spooky gunship.

The C-130 is one of the most successful, versatile and economical airborne platforms in our fleet- it has been in service in one form or another in the US military since 1953, the only aircraft that is close in age is the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress- I doubt the engineers that created these planes envisioned them still being in service after 60 years, but that's how we used to build things in America...

probably it isnt even available annymore in such a form
i think making one will aquire also a total investegatement because it sertainly will be an hell of an update, though they are bussy with it
i readed they wanted to adapt mc-130j's and upgrade those with some guns
just the way like they did with the c-130
but that idea was scraped
though they gonna order a new ac-130 variant ac-130j i thought

@13thmistral A project in the works is a Converted C-5, the AC-5 Super Spooky. and the same thing with a C-17 Globe master, dubbed AC-17 Spooky II. Both involve engine retrofits to allow it to fly slower than normal limits. This unfortunately causes higher noise and fuel consumption rates. Currently being tested at white sands proving grounds. I think ordering new AC-130U's would be cheaper and more effective.

i think they shoud have an plain that has those slow proppeler engines that the ac-130 has, but then some extra's for emergencies
in anny case, somewhere i hpe, if they ever gona use a c5 galaxy and put guns in that one, they will have some guns with autoloaders and modenr controls

@13thmistral theres already desighns for a new transport carrier to replace the older c5s which were use for the old m60 tank.. we dont use m60s any more so switching c5 to a gun ship might be of better use for it!

The AC130 was only a concept in the Vietnam war with a DC transport plane that had a "few" upgrades of 4 mini guns and starlight scopes. Now the grandson of that is the AC 130 spooky gunship.

I was imagining U.S using this plane against countries with heavy air defense systems.
Bare in mind that this mighty warplane costs more than $190.
It takes only a cheap SAM system to take out this plane especially due to its lack of stealth and maneuverability.
I'm not saying this plane is useless. It's just too expensive.
