@WFIST Every pitch source on their entire album, SONOSings, including this track is voice generated. The section you refer to is actually a human voice going through an octave pedal. The particular pedal they use has a very smooth low end EQ which gives it a sound very close to an electric bass. I saw Sonos use these same effects live on stage at their CD Release show last September in Los Angeles and got a chance to speak to them about this very topic.

@Cbell567 Viewing your site which looks like a thoughtful tribute to the Jackson 5 it's clear that you are a huge fan who will only ever be open to their version. But if you pay attention to the lyrics, you'll see that the Sonos version accurately reflects the plaintive nature of the meaning behind the words. Barry Gordy wrote the song, the Jackson 5 did their upbeat pop version of it, and Sonos has turned it on it's head with their arrangement. A plain copy of the original would be a waste.

Thanks for taking a second look. I think everyone agrees that the Jackson 5 version is killer, and no cover will ever erase that song or its impact on people. What Sonos has done takes nothing away from the original version - if anything it moves away from it completely to create something different. Have a great day!

Sonos has reinvented the song. It's not meant to be a copy of the Jackson 5 version. This song was written by Berry Gordy's "The Corporation" . Michael Jackson had nothing to do with its composition. The Jackson 5 did it their way which was phenomenal, and Sonos has reinterpreted it their way which most critics and music fans agree is a brilliant reinvention giving a completely different feel which actually matches the lyrics. Instead of throwing profanity, open your mind a bit and enjoy!

I'm going to get voted down for this, but I mean it purely constructively. I've listened to this album for a few weeks now, and my only complaints are (1) an enraging amount of swooping (2) over-sibilant-izing every s and especially t [when you say "tsoo" instead of "two"]. A lot of white kids who sing pop do both of those so eh. But the music would do so much better without. HOWEVER your arrangements are /superb/. It's so fun to keep an ear out for how you've parsed/arranged the songs. KUDOS!!!

The performance is great the singing very expressive, but a shame they amputated the fantastic descending bassline which is this tune's signature

Including that bassline would have made it impossible to for them to reinvent the song. It would have simply been a lame copy of the Jackson 5 version (which everyone agree was phenomenal). What Sonos has done with this song is universally acknowledged by music critics as brilliant. Google "Sonosings review", check some reviews, and you'll get an idea of what I mean. Try to make some room for this - such expressive creativity should be encouraged.
