I am from Newcastle, Australia, it is car dominated here as well, and motorists are hostile. Most drivers dont even know many of the rules of the road, and many are aggressive.
We also spread our cities out to much and that urban sprawl creates a dependency on cars, and then cars create sprawl and the cycle goes on.
@nitramluap If you are talking peak oil, I think you are right, however when petrol hit $1.65 some people went without food rather then not driving. Also cars are also a pest, because recumbent bikes/ trikes make so much sense, but you tend to get a bit putt off getting one because of all the people swanning around the city in their SUV's. I think though a Velo might stand out better.
@KrunchyJD Oh yes, peak oil. More specifically, peak 'cheap' oil is what is going to get us all. Cars are a wonderful invention - and I do like driving them occasionally - but the way 99% of people use them really angers me... so wasteful. The velomobile does stand out that's for sure. I just make sure I don't creep up on stationary cars in the driver's blind spot.
Great to see streets I actually remember from my visit to Brisbane. But I must admit: I drove (and walked) there... You are right that riding with buses is awful. I do remember that from NL to. When I cycled to and from school some 35 years ago, we still had that in the Netherlands too. Glad those days are over. Hope you can say that too one day...
@KrunchyJD I wrote this out of anger. It would be good if Australia became as cycling friendly as the Netherlands, but I doubt it. I would preffer to live in The Netherlands, though, where I can ride my bike without the fear of some aggressive motorist trying to run me over.
@dregerclock Sure would... although I'd be happy to see just half of them on normal bicycles. Too many cars and the young generation love their cars even more than their parents. It's a worry. Almost all have one occupant.
Do you ride your velo to work?

@KrunchyJD Sure do, but not every day. Only one of my workplaces has a spot where I can park it safely.

wouldn't it be cool to see everyone driving velos and bikes through a street like that?
