I went to your site and tried to figure out how to read your lye calculator. I'm not sure how to read it. If the range is between 4.2 oz and 3.8oz I should try for 4 oz and stay in the middle?
@lil5firecracker5 if you mean the amount lye is between 4.2 oz and 3.8 oz... if you want a harder bar that might be a little more harsh you would use closer to 4.2 oz... if you want a milder bar that might be a little soft (though most likely not if you use coconut and palm oil) then closer to 3.8 oz.
Using 4.2 oz of lye means you want to convert ALL off the oil to soap. Using 3.8 oz means you want to leave some oil behind to give a little moisturizing effect for the skin.
In the video you only ad Palm, Coco oil, Soybean oil and Coco butter... but the metaphysical farms calculator shows you added beeswax and castor oil..... Did I miss something?
this is one of the best videos ive seen. lots of clear information and you didnt skip any steps. any beginner can follow this and have no problem. I can't wait to watch your other videos. I wish you much success!
I don't understand why people would need to put LYE in their soaps. I know that LYE is a harsh chemical. It was an ingredient that was use in my hair processing product, but putting it in products to use directly on the skin seems dangerous. Isn't there something else that can be use to replace that ingredient?
I dont really understand, why you need so many types of oils, is that not unnecessary? If I want to keep it simple can I just use olive oil and lye and some essential oil for scenting? A noob asking :)
@orgay3 you can but the soap will be soft... the different types of oils give the soap different qualities... palm and coconut oil make the soap firm... olive oil makes it good for the skin... caster oil makes nice bubbles... etc etc
But there is nothing that would prevent soap being made from just olive oil and lye
I think it's great you are teaching safety. I am noticing that there are countless soapmakers online 'teaching' but, not using any safety precautions or explaining how dangerous this can be if not done correctly. We have a responsibility if we post. Great Job.
I love this video but Its really hard to hear you over the music. Good call warning about the glass exploding I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere yet!
I think you can as long as the mango is dried (anything organic and containing water will rot during the curing process) and ground finely - big chunks would not feel very good when you're washing your face/hands! Good luck.
I believe you get a glycerine layer when you render impure fats. Since this fellow is using purified oils, the soap should be homogenized when he finishes the process.
dear sir, i notice that you add about .5oz (half) of frgrance oil to 34oz batcht . i add about 1.5oz to 16oz batch still they not throw scent i use fragrance oil from wellingtaon what is your brand ?
I'm not sure what soya milk is... but I would suspect you can. You can use ketchup, apple juice, or tea... so I'm thinking any liquid will work. You'll just have to experiment :D
If you can't pour the mixture into the mold. Sometimes (because of fragrances usually) the liquid will seize while mixing. You can still use the soap (if you mixed it enough beforehand) ... it will just be very hard to make smooth in the mold
I found that as you were explaining important info. The music burning down the house drained your voice out.I was not able to hear your instructions clearly and I had to keep backtracking.Maybe if you just have it softly playing in the background.
I thought it was kind of funny that "Burning down the house" was playing during the part that if done improperly could potentially cause an explosion. (water into lye) How ironically appropriate.
Thanks again! I did do the tongue test as well, I guess I just got a tart taste instead of a sizzle. I did also test regular bar soap from the supermarket and got the same reading....I will try the drops, they will probably give a better reading.
It takes about 4-6 weeks for the soap to be completely done. Until then it might show a more basic ph. I usually test it with my tongue... if it burns... it's not ready :)
If you continually find the soap to be too high in lye... you might consider using a higher discount (10-13% instead of the 5-6% I suggest)
I like your video you actually make it look much much easier then most of the women make it look, though I think half the time they make it look much harder only because they want you to ask them questions lol
Honestly dont you think that making homemade soap is much more expensive then buying it. When you add the costs up it really doesnt save too much money at all does it?
Yeah... the discount is anywhere from 5-13%. So what you are doing is discounting the lye... letting the lye work on the oil you start with and then adding the held back oil at the end so you are fairly certain that it will be left unchanged and just in the soap.
Yeah it is great video with nice, natural explanation, Dave, I would really like to see how it looks when it is dry and ready for use. Thanks for nice vid.
I was able to understand most of what you said, but the music did drown you out in several places. Thanks for your help.

This has been one of the most thorough explanations I've seen yet. Most demonstrations leave me confused because of the editing.

Does the glycerine layer come out on top of the Lye-water mixture after it has cooled down? is that layer to be removed before you mix in the oils?

dear sir, how to determine the amount of fragrance oil
thusitha2007 2 years ago
There are free calculators on the Internet for that. But usually for batches the size I make about 2-3 oz.
daved314 2 years ago
Typically, I use .5-.7 ounces of fragrance and/or essential oil for every 1 pound of soap.

how do you know how much oil to be added when superfatting ?
tommye87 3 years ago
when you use the calculator it gives you a "discount" of lye.... and you can hold back any amount of oil for the end.
daved314 3 years ago
ok so you dont add all the oil in the beginning and the discount is that the 5 % ?
tommye87 3 years ago
Yeah... the discount is anywhere from 5-13%. So what you are doing is discounting the lye... letting the lye work on the oil you start with and then adding the held back oil at the end so you are fairly certain that it will be left unchanged and just in the soap.
