top tips thanks, if you get chance will you have a look at some songs I've wrote to see what you think, most of them are written about my personal experiences, I've not been writing long. anybody else I would welcome your opinions thanks.
My biggest annoyance...singers who write a poem and hand it to me saying they wrote a song telling me to put music to it...hello, me writing music to go with your poem does NOT mean you are a songwriter...learn to play an instrument or at the very least, have a melody in mind for your little poem.
Nice well thought out tips. Especially the last one, another way I like to express it is this way. What do diamond miners find mostly by far in their work? "dirt and rocks".
But if they let it depress them they would never find the diamonds.
So you're right, get good at pulling rocks out and don't worry about how many diamonds you find, they'll always be rare, but then they wouldn't be special otherwise.
This Chris Martin lookalike seems like a really great guy. I knew all these things already (I also learned them the hard way). But it was still very fun to listen to him speak of this topic.
I knew some of this already, but it was still pretty helpful. Thanks <3 But I do have one problem...I need help getting second opinions from people who will be impartial, and thus honest! So if some of you could please go to my YouTube channel (click on my name) and comment on how good you think one or two of my songs are, and what could be improved, that would be great! Thanks!
First tip is good to hear, most of my songs are very personal. Very nice, I do save my lyrics in my computer, I also save a "rough draft" acapella version. I have forgotten several by the time I get somewhere I can write it down, it is annoying haha
You are a very good song writer, mine are mediocre at best he he. Yeah, most do not make it to the final stages.
Great tips- I've been there and done that on some of those things where I lost my musical ideas. It's pretty frustrating when you lose something that was amazing the first time and you didn't record it!
I went into shock when he said he doesn't like Harry Potter. People who don't like Harry Potter exist? The convo in my mind went .. and you have read Harry Potter and you are sure you dont like it? This baffles me a lot.
One of the reasons I write songs at all is because I like storytelling (for the audience). I think the genre of young adult talking about her life is pretty much covered. I have been writing storytelling songs for years, which cater to an audience's liking but also fulfill my creativity as a songwriter. Maybe I just don't have the guts to talk about myself onstage, but I think your first tip isn't helpful for people who would rather tell a story than make a self centered song.
And just to clarify- I don't think songwriting that is about real life is BAD, but I think giving advice to people to write for themselves alone isn't good advice. I think new songwriters should explore varieties of their creativity.
I don't think he was suggesting that songwriters should only write songs about themselves and their experiences, but that they should make sure they write songs that they enjoy. As you say, it's really important to fulfil your creativity, and if you were writing songs that didn't do that, just to please your audience, then that probably wouldn't be your best work, and nobody would be happy. But it's definitely great for writers to explore varieties of their creativity =)
As ghostwritten has more or less said, what I meant by my first tip was that you should write songs that YOU want to write - don't feel dictated by the wants and needs of your audience. (Obviously that can include songs about your own life and experiences if you're so inclined).
Great tips! A lot of these apply to other arts as well -- writing (or painting or composing or acting or choreographing) for yourself, saving everything, the value of simplicity, sharing your work, and not everything you write (or paint or compose etc.) will be good.
i know exactly what you mean. I have tons of Photoshop files of half-completed projects are the probably never going anywhere. But your tip about saving everything is definitely a good one!
those are some great tips. I def. still have songs that are constantly coming to a crashing halt.... the worst is when you start off super excited about them and THEN come to realize they're absolute shite. haha
Very helpful- thank you! I think it is also helpful to establish how many hours a day to song write and to study songwriting.

I agree 100%. I'm a writer, and I was thinking the same thing throughout the video. It's all excellent advice for any creative pursuit.
Great job, Paul.

I feel a lot of this goes with writing stories, not just songs.
Though arguably songs are stories. But with guitars.
But still. (:
