Normrally wingovers will create high sink rates, up to 20m/s. This is crucial in order to keep the speed as sharp turns will cause your airspeed to bleed.Ridge lift is not powerfull enought to sustain wingovers. Keeping pressure on the prakes is only to sence dengerous airspeeds and will not help you when you run out of speed. Pulling the brakes harder on the outside when the pressure is low is dangerous. Continiue the turn, and let the wing gain airspeed.
I live in holland, and we have similar conditions, so I cant take this movie out of my head every time Im doing wingovers since the cause to me is not fully determined. All I do is to make sure the to keep the tension on both sides and flying the glider as a series of turns instead of relying on the swinging motion. In this way keeping the center of gravity directly under the wing, were in the swinging motion youre pulling the outer wing downwards. The loads gliders are not designed to take.
Lacking an airframe, all PG's are unairworthy. Something similar has happened to virtually every PG pilot I know. Before you try flying one of these things, search and watch this on YouTube:
Hace 3 años tuve un accidente muy parecido a este en un omega 5 a 40 mts de altura, dejándome muy cerca a un rotor de unas casas complicándome la recuperación de la vela, la verdad verlo desde afuera te vienen a la mente miles de soluciones, pero sentirlo y darte cuenta que la cagaste a baja altura es otra cosa, todos algun dia hemos cometido errores pero algunos lo hemos pagado con sangre.
can someone please tell me which paraglider is durable and good for beginners, also one that is suitable for powered flight and can also be flown well without a motor, thanks.
Lucky it was a sandy beach - He/she's probably done that loads of times before but not in those conditions or that site perhaps. Makes a big difference when you horsing about.
Im no expert but it just looked like he didnt use enough oposite brake to keep the tension and pressure in the wing as he was braking and weight shift left with such a degree of bank you need to use that right brak to stop the wing from collapsing.
man you pg pilots have some balls 100s feet up dangling from a bed sheet. ill stick to rigid hangliders thanks those collapses look rough hat off to ya
It's called ridgesoaring. The conditions sound and appear perfect. This pilot made a poorly timed wingover, just as easy to do in calm conditons. Ditch you motor & ride a 8m/s thermal to the moon, then see if you can make that statement.
He is a Swede from Gothenburg (as I self) age +50, 110kg! And it´s a brand new Mustang at that moment for him. He is almost OK now but his back take a lot of damage of course. The main thing is headwind 45 degrees angle and a low pressure wingover... say no more :(
I hope that you are better now, and the injures were not great. Can you tell us the amount of experience you have with wing overs, and flying time. Do you think that your weight shifting along with not enough brake pressure on right side were the problem?
Exactly same thing happened to me on a dune flight ... except I was higher and could reopen before killing my feet ! .. Pretty scary anyway. With such a strong wind, when the wing over isn't "facing" the wind, the air makes some pressure on the ..hum ... "wrong side" of the glide (extrados in French) .... Where was that anyway? looks like a great spot!

The safest paraglider is called a hang glider.

@winterka100 The safest hang glider is called a sailplane.
.... the only thing safer than that is flying in your dreams.

Best source for equipment information is your qualified instructor. Find one here:
usppa - org
ushpa - aero
That said, the Mac Para Muse 2 is great for beginners and has a riser with two hook-in positions for powered and unpowered flight.
macpara - com
But there are many other great wings. Just make sure that the one you choose is certified.

Definitely too much inside brake and not enough outside. At altitude you can dive and spin, but you have time to correct it.... That had to hurt.

I mean...Listen to all that wind in the mic. Powerless Paragliding will never make sense to me. Make your own perfect conditions...get a motor.
fdzwes 4 years ago
perfect conditions being loud as fuck and mind/ass numbing vibrations at 5-8am? sounds like a great sport to me. Free Flight rules. (yes, I do both)
SineCalvin9 4 years ago 4
We can perform a simple and effective test...
Check out youtube for accidents involving "Paragliding" then accidents involving "Powered Paragliding". Nuff Said.

IMHO PPG gets boring fast ... little challenge, you just zoom about. Same with water sports give me the sailboat over the jetski any day.
CornishColin 3 years ago 2
You call using youtube as a source of accident data "effective test"?
Do you think that if he had been using a motor the collapse would not have happened?

This is the west coast of Denmark at a spot called Loekken, you can go approx 10-12 km, the pilot is Swedish or German, and is still alive.
At the westcoast you should be carefull doing low altitude wingower, especially if the wind is comming at the hill at an angel.
