Full sus in nice, but id say a hardtail is more than adaquate at cannock, (especially on a student budget) this year I rode the Megavalanche in Alpe du Huez in 2:38 on a Kona Blast 09 deluxe (hardtail) with some rockshox recon 6" forks on. Having said that after about 25K i had to ease off a bit because my legs were dying :)

Nah, geometry didn't feel like it changed much going from 4" to 6", but the difference going from dart 2's to recon airs was massive on the shock absorption over small bumps, as for stress on the frame, I still ride the hardtail 40ish miles a week round town and its still going strong, so im hoping not too much stress!
I now have a full sus as well to play on the bigger stuff, and i'll admit since I got it, the hardtail hasn't had as much use (especially as its slightly heavier) :P
DHing is easier to do with full suspension but it is doable with a hardtail but you have to look out for those bigger jumps and try to avoid the biggest ones
nice, i'm bit of an all rounder (in the m-bikeing area) and try my hand at a bit of everything, but i can feel myself leaning towards downhill, but damn my injury rate! kewl video!
