mmmh I tried that in 3ds max 2010 and I put Matte/Shadow material on to the plane, but I get a totally black plane. The receive shadows box is checked, so what else could be wrong?
@deimos2k6 Hey, I got the same totally black plane the first time I tried this. So I did it my way and got it to work. Check out my tutorial on my website and let me know if it works for you.

Nice stuff man. Helped my out....haven't used Mac in years...needed it today. Needed to added only shadows and not the plane.....worked a treat.
PS: Was using max 6.....all good.
