This is good, I am still trying to convince my "older" collegues to consider online media channels as a form of communicating to our target audiences, yet the good old media release always wins. I will be playing this to them tomorrow!
This is so so true...if you are a small business, why bother spending your time persuading a journalist to write about you, and persuading them to write the things that you want, when you can just go direct to your customers yourself.
I agree Jeremy. I have referred to blogs for certain advice and tips but a little skepticism is always on my cards too..I've done some research on whether people trust online information.. quite interesting.. majority do!
His points are valid however I don't think this spells the end of media relations (as David would call it) as an important element in the marketing mix. Certain media channels maintain high trust relationships with their audience, whereas most stuff I read from companies or blogs I take with a dose of healthy scepticism.
It's the way to go; directly talking to your customer provides many benefits. The customer relationship that grows is stronger and more durable then if it where formed through the medias eyes.
Aha,the use of social networks brings a lot of PR internally within a business.Perhaps this could be a new direction or line of business for PRs is one that simply creates well aligned connections? It's already happening with some well connected people who are effectively utilising their networks to drive both their primary buisnesses and to help others and profit from this too. I had a cracking conversation with Mike O'Neil from Integrated Alliances about this yesterday.
In this regard, what the web has done for business is truly liberating. Now that people can speak directly to the public there's no more having to kiss up to journos ... well, less of it anyway!
I reckon most PR people are still a bit old school when it comes to differentiating between the two and understanding the concept of how they both work and they really need to catch up!
Good point really! 6 months ago I would have been one of those people that thought media relations and public relations were the same thing. Now after knowing the difference, really it is just common sense.
Got so blunt here sir.

Yeah and they might twist it into something completely different.

Seems to me that David could teach traditional PR people about effective media relations and how to communicate.

I really wouldn't have known the difference myself, but it does seem quite obvious after hearing this.
