I think this man was SCARED because it was too real for him, Moana is not only beautiful but intelligent, talented and soulful but wasn't his pre-concieved "Ideal". She is also free spirited and independent who goes where her heart takes her, the girl he picked was a more traditional WASP type that he probably felt was more suitable to family, friends and society as a whole. Moana I believe truly loved him in a way that he wasn't ready for and he just couldn't deal with it...
