that no-warning battery death, (and longevity of battery life) is a deal killer for me. Ill take an invincible casio anyday. Whats with this fascination for negative displays anyway..
@devtank1 It does have a low battery indicator but the one I my watch seems glitchy. (It turns on about a week before the battery dies but then turns off again.) I just keep extra batteries on hand. They about 2 minutes to replace, which you can do in the field. (The back unscrews with a coin.)
When my Casio died it was dead for a month before I could get it to a shop, as the battery is not user replaceable. I have to say, I prefer the field-replaceable battery of the Suunto despite its shorter lifespan.
Can you tell me if there is any difference in contrast between the diapositive black display and the brown-yellow display. Like wich is best vissible during day time, low-light conditions and no-light conditions. And does the backlight looks clearly enough on both of them?
@Nikudes Yeah I know, and now I'm also looking for the orange strap old version(brown display). It says on the Suunto site that they don't make it with brown display anymore. But I found a webshop in my country (Netherlands) which may still have an old version, and for a decent price.. I am currently waiting for their reply on that. But the light brown strap will not be a problem over here, there are many shops that still have that. Just hoping I can find the old orange black version.
@hurmzz This wasn't an out-of-the-box color combo. I bought the orange strap, orange screen Suunto Core and replaced the original strap with a brown, light elastomer version. It looks like neither the orange screen Core or the brown strap are currently available though. The closest combo might be the Suunto Core All Black with the black light elastomer strap.
@UnivoxMax Technically, yes, but the watch's 30m rating represents its absolute, one-time test limit in a static environment. There's a good article on Wikipedia about water resistance, if you'd like to read more. I generally go with 1/3 of the rated depth for real-world use, although the Wikipedia article says watches rated to 30m are not suitable for swimming. The Suunto manual, however, says the maximum service depth for the Core is 10m which translates to 32.8 ft.
@bezgeo85 Hi, sorry for the delay in responding. Batteries seem to last six to eight months. But I don't find this a big deal. They're very easy to change. The countdown timer actually has a 99 minute maximum. The only thing I usually time are parking meters, so that's enough for me. For a two hour meter, I just set for an hour and reset for another hour.
Hello friend! I really like the watch. But I would like to know the following. There is a need to remove it from the wrist to measure the temperature of the environment? Thanks! Thanks!
@GuiuFlash Yes, the heat of your body will effect the temperature reading but that's true for any watch that measures temp. Take it off and after 20 min. the temp. reading will be correct. Best, Nik
@nikudes thanks for replying, hope you enjoy core, from what i see cpre is the top of abc watches, the only problems i found is some quality issues or software problems, do you find any problems with it? is there any fear for swimming or snorkelling? something i should know before buying? thanks in advance
@bezgeo85 No, I haven't had any problems. If any come up it's possible to reset the watch by pushing and holding down all four "corner" buttons. Swimming or snorkeling has been fine. Just remember then watch can only handle depths of about 30 feet, but that should be plenty for snorkeling. If you wear it in salt water, just rinse it well after use. Best, Nik
@bezgeo85 Hi, the watch still works as new. It hasn't been getting super hardcore use, just daily wear and occasional camping, mountain biking, snorkeling. But I've been very happy with it. It's an easy watch to live with. The display can be dim in low light but I don't notice that issue often.
@nikudes These watches barely hold up to daily use. The bezels wear from contact with clothes, the bands are crap and the crystals seem to scratch with air contact. Other than that they are great watches. Get a Pathfinder. My PAG40 has survived 2 tours of Iraq and years of harsh training evolutions in the Military. I have owned both. The Suunto is best if you only use it for bicycling.
@mecover I appreciate your service and your feedback. It sounds like I can stick by my "Suunto Core is like an Audi. Casio Pathfinder is like a Toyota" analogy.
I'll buy the orange version of this one on the strength of your review. I will buy the black strap too! I'll keep my Panerai for the office. Great reviews, thanks.
Good review. Call me picky, but the smacking in-between sentences drove me crazy. Were you eating laffy taffy or something? Yikes. Something to be aware of. Thanks for taking the time to show us a great watch.
One thing that I'm wondering about is that your Core seems to have orange screen, while the one I've just ordered seems to be grey. Know something about this?
@MrYoungmerlin Yup, you can do that on the compass screen. Set a bearing and it will guide you. My other video, Suunto Core Review, shows this feature.
but I also get the imression that you're one of those pesudo sportive ppl who think that if they buy pro sport gear that they belong to the sportive scene. You seem like one of those hikers with high tech equipment. Enjoy buying high thech equipment that'ts far over your standart and pretent that you actually need it.
It has a depth meter but it's only good for 30 feet, so only for snorkeling. You might want to check out my videos on the Citizen Aqualand 20th Anniversary model. It's an analog/digital dive watch with a lot of functionality. And it's rated to 600 feet.
I've heard alot of reviews saying that this watch needs to have the battery replaced alot like every three weeks. Also that people have had problems with the watch freezing up as well reseting on it's own. Have you had any of these problems?
Nice videos, thanks heaps. I just got my core today. do you know if you can set the temerature. Mine is telling me that is is 30deg/cel but i know it is 15deg/cel in my area...
You're welcome--glad you liked. The temperature sensor on the watch will be affected by your body heat. There's no way that I know of to compensate for that. If you want it to show true temperature you have to take it off and let it sit for about 20 minutes. I mainly use the temp. function at night when I'm not wearing the watch, like how cold is it in the tent, etc.
Hi there, nice review. I heard of lots of problem of the Core as far as the overall quality and battery issue go. It's a great design and good looking, but I'm a bit hesitatnt to make my purchase due to so many deregotory comments around. Personally, do you have any problems with your watch? How long have you been using it? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hey man thanks a lot for all the videos on the core. I was just wondering if it has a rugged feel to it. I want a watch that i won't have to worry about no matter where I go and that won't scratch or break too easily... Thanks again
No worries, glad they're useful. I'm not sure about the scratch resistance. If ruggedness is a priority, check out the Casio Pathfinders. They have a similar feature set, seem really rugged, and cost less than half the price of the Core so you may wince less when you scratch it. Or buy the Core and wear a sweat band over it. ;)
Got my B/O Core just few days ago and the same light brown band for it as well. Looks just right. '09 version so the contrast was already set to 5, pretty spot on. And loving the "darkness" of the display. It's never bright, but always readable and with light it's the same; enough to see but doesn't screw up your night vision etc.
But yeah wanted to say thanks again for the vids! Helped the decision to switch to a newer Suunto.
I have. It helps a little. In case anyone else is interested, there are directions for how to do this in the comments section of Part 3 of my Suunto Core vs Casio Pathfinder comparison.
hi im thinking of this sunto core black or a sunto core stainless steel with leather strap or the casio pwr 1500t which should i get i like the casio has solar but i know the features on the sunto are better please help..thanks
It really comes down to how you're going to use it and personal preference. I'm not that familiar with the 1500 but from what I've found online... Do you need a tide graph, enhanced water resistance and moon phase? Then go with the Casio. Do you want a slicker look, a menu-driven display the ability to log and playback your altimeter readings? Then go with the Suunto.
First of all thanks for the vids about Suunto CORE. They've been most helpful and entertaining aswell.
Been using the old Observer by Suunto myself over a decade now and thinking of changing to CORE and these vids are spot on for the info.
Question about the daily alarm sound though. Not the reason why to buy (or not) this watch but with Observer the sound is so quiet that it's utterly useless really. And haven't found a video or any actual reference point how's it like with CORE...
The alarm works well. It always wakes me up and sounds pleasant too (a loop of three beeps descending in pitch). It even has an optional 5-minute snooze function. It's a really good, well thought out alarm.
Same - have a Observer for 10+ years, two bands later and a lot of hard use., great unit. The function vids for the core are outstanding, Suunto should provide your link, may sell more and cut down on calls.
