Woaw, il vend du rêve notre bon vieux Candeloro. Incarner comme ça un personnage de l'histoire dans une chorée, c'est magnifique. J'adore à 3:36, cet enchaînement de coups d'épée imaginaire, c'est juste grandiose !
he was a showman! for me, he is the best from history... the others are nice, but boring in comparison with this! best regards, Philippe, from Romania!
This has to be one of the most delightful performances seen on ice. What's different is that it appeals to everyone. Even if you are not interested in ice skating one bit, you can't help but be charmed by this!
I remember watching this back then. He was the best - raised the bar. And can you imagine how much Japanese poon-tang he probably hit while he was in Nagano after that performance?
I met him in Gothenburg, back in 1993... WOW! What a character! Charming, handsome and a devil on the ice... My oldest son, born in 1994, was named after him, lol. I remember sitting in fron of the telly, watching this, screaming and yelling when I saw he got the bronze!
je suis canadienne, et j'adore ce patineur...un des grands artists (et je mets l'emphase sur le mot ARTISTE) du patinage...quand il le fait, on voit absolumment son esprit joyeux et creatif
@0vershade Lost? Todd Eldrige was all set to take the bronze. Phillippe skated and knocked Todd off the podium. NO ONE expected Phillippe toi get a medal.
@0vershade I agree with you, but those missed jumps were not the reason he "lost." He was already in fifth after the short program, so he would have needed a minor miracle to pull all the way to first. The fact that he got to third was pretty stunning. Plus, even if he had been perfect, no one was going to beat Ilia Kulik that night. Kulik certainly did not have this level of showmanship and drama, but he was flawless. One of the most authoritative wins in the Olympics.
I remember this! Oh, i loved the program, cheered all the way..and wished he was foot perfect. Sadly, that wasn't the case. But the choreography.. the details! Amazing!
I remember this - big hit with the ladies! The judges were less impressed. "Not that challenging technically"...but the artistic impression carried him through. As for "man-like skating",well,he wears knee-length leather boots, and his programme is dancing and romancing with the ladies and swashbuckling sword-fights with the bad guys! That's about as Errol Flynn as you can get on ice!
There is a reason for his costume! The music is taken from the film D'Artagnan, who has been in former times one of the famous musketeers. Candeloro tries to give a better interpretation to this music wearing this costume, I think he did it very well!!!
On comprend la raison du ALLEZ PHILIPPE! vers 4,20, vers la fin il semble épuisé, son coach sait qu'il va peut etre se relacher, mais ça ne suffit pas. dommage! Je ne me lasse jamais de revoir ce programme!
the thing I like the most about this programme is that it's a real man-like skating. even these days, perhaps you see technically excellent skating, but too many men do girlish programmes. And I just love how he enjoys himself on the ice.
Thanks for uploading this! This was the best men's long program at the 1998 Olympics imo. My favorite by far. And to me-one of the greatest ever. The best routines don't always win.
Quelle performance adorable!
I TOTALLY agree with you! His performance and his charisma won't be surpassed, by no one! I saw his performance 10 years ago, and I still remember it. It's just perfect! :) Unique and Original. Specially in the Gala! xD
i met philipe candelero! at this 1 place called the cube! he is so hot! and i told him i love him in french!he sed "you speak good french!"!!!lol! im drop dead serious! i wanted his autograph, bbut we had to leave before i could get it! :(
I've only watched a bit of figure skating in the past, mostly at the Winter Olympics...but Candeloro was the only one that I always remembered. Technically there were better (though not many...) but artistically he was a champ. The 'Candeloro Spin', the bunny hops, the facial expressions and body language...such a fun guy to watch.
Ole Phillipe could sure pull it out when he needed to, unlike some of the more-credentialed skaters. I always loved this program. Tres Bien! (Not sure if my French is correct, but I tried!)
In fact, he won bronze in the end, but neverthless, it was a huge success for him. Even almost 10 years after watching this gives me shivers...Brilliant!
That is quite a great skate!!! What is the music though? It's not the 1993 version by Michael Kamen, I have that soundtrack and this sounds nothing like it LOL.
Thanks very much. Yeah when I heard that he was using "The Three Musketeers" I automatically assumed the Kamen version was it, but obviously not. Phillipe is very talented to skate AND compose though!
noone plz get me wrong but he is one of the skaters who doesnt seem like gay :) he is handsome and charming. also this d'artagnan show is unforgettable.

And yes, this is how men should dress, not lace and silky weird stuff they put on these days.
He lost because he missed those jumps and his pirouettes were low, but man! what a show!!!
