I was in a jam two weeks ago, and didnt have any small condensors, so i threw a single C4000B on the kit in Omni, and it sounded freaking goregous!!! Im gonna do that from now on! granted, i was in a live setting, but it was still a great sound
" notice im not laughing because that was not a funny joke" Hahahah just the fact that you said that out lud, was funny. hahaha its all good, good info video
it only looks like they are higher because I am shooting the video from low on the ground. I actually measured and set them up at around 5 feet! Hope this helps
hmm.. thats pretty much how overheads sounds alone .. which it is.. you're getting a little bit of blury sound on the toms.... but nice idea to just use overheads.. works pretty good in a cheap mixing.. and geners like early rock nw roll.. beatles like :D
... don't "x" me "y" but it works??? jeeeezzz that made me laugh to death... thank's for the vid, it's extremely useful. But please tell me what about that thing called "phase problem" which is supposed to happen when 2 mics are that close?, how do I know when I have it and how to I solve it?
When the polar patterns are too close to each other the microphones will pick up the same frequency at the same time. It's a distinct sound that you can't really miss. To sort the problem, there's a switch on the mixer to cancel the phase. If, for any particular reason there isn't one, lower the fader of one mic. Problem solved.
That's incorrect. You'd only need to do that if you were micing, say, a snare drum from the top and bottom simultaneously. The sound wave from the bottom mic would look like a miror image of the top mic, causing cancellation. You'd therefore flip the phase of the bottom mic - problem solved.
There is no need to flip the phase (or, more accurately, the polarity) of either mic when using the XY technique.
correct. No need to flip phase in the xy technique. The 3 to 1 rule is pretty good to follow. For every foot one mic is from the source, make sure that any other mic is atleast 3 feet from that mic. Maybe I worded that right? hahaha
Depends on the microphone. SM58s usually have about 3 inches of a cardiod pattern. It depends on brand and model really. I'm a live engineer, so I usually battle to isolate the initial attack of a sound. In the studio, there's more room to play with and less background noise, making it easier to use less mics. I understand the snare phase arguement happyronbin. Wasn't too sure on this XY business. Thank you for your help also.
i use those mics, they sound fucking awesome

A question, can you plug another mic near the bass drum because those mic get all the sound from up, and the bass drum doesn't sound very loud??
Mediicenlautyy 11 months ago

Thanks.

more bass drum.. but still perfect sound (:
MarkusGronroos 2 years ago
yeah! the overheads can be a good sound on their own, but a kick microphone would be ideal!
recorddrums 2 years ago
@MarkusGronroos i agree, blame it on two things at this point: Drummer's technique and kick drum quality and head type.

You say 5 feet off the floor that isn't very high. Maybe 8 feet or more but not 5 feet. Your picture surely shows about 8 to 9 feet above the floor.

georgie6699 2 years ago
Phase problems can occur when two mics capture the same sound at different times- try googling "phase cancellation" to find out more.
The XY technique actually eliminates phase problems because sounds hit the mics at the same time.
happyronbin 2 years ago
yes, happyronbin said it right.
QuickSkits 2 years ago
When the polar patterns are too close to each other the microphones will pick up the same frequency at the same time. It's a distinct sound that you can't really miss. To sort the problem, there's a switch on the mixer to cancel the phase. If, for any particular reason there isn't one, lower the fader of one mic. Problem solved.
MannGegenMann666 2 years ago
That shouldn't work, unless your desk / mixer has a phase switch on it.
MannGegenMann666 2 years ago
That's incorrect. You'd only need to do that if you were micing, say, a snare drum from the top and bottom simultaneously. The sound wave from the bottom mic would look like a miror image of the top mic, causing cancellation. You'd therefore flip the phase of the bottom mic - problem solved.
