  • i use those mics, they sound fucking awesome

  • WRONG that was a funnny joke!

  • They cheated, they put a mic on the snare! Hahaha

  • That ride sounds awful but the XY technique captured every flawed overtone.

  • what microphones are you using?

  • @MattTisbert Is a Audix F15 i have the same ones..

  • what sound editing software would you suggest?!?! PLEASE TELL ME

  • A question, can you plug another mic near the bass drum because those mic get all the sound from up, and the bass drum doesn't sound very loud??

  • so dont u use a mixer to connect the two mics into your pc?

  • i have those same mics!

  • that sounded like shit. i hope you have more where you add mics?

  • May I ask you what's the difference between this technique and using just regular overhead technique (one mic left and one right) ?

    Thanks.

  • I have those oh mics, i dont use them, i bought better ones, but i have those... from the audix pack.

  • u mean i gotta buy cables?!!!! 0.o

  • I nearly died laughing with that "x me y" joke. You were so serious.

  • XXXXDDDDDd Don't X me Y.

  • nice technic!

is the playing at 1:10 recorded with the overheads only?

  • that's pretty sweet, but how do you actually RECORD the drums? what do you use, don't laugh at me, im completely new to this haha

  • @muffinsNsausage wikipedia

  • dude i gotta try this...thanks...

  • I was in a jam two weeks ago, and didnt have any small condensors, so i threw a single C4000B on the kit in Omni, and it sounded freaking goregous!!! Im gonna do that from now on! granted, i was in a live setting, but it was still a great sound

  • I think adding one more mic for your kick would complete the set up and give you a better sound

  • the fact that you said it wasn't funny made it funny.

  • i like 1:31!!GOOD BOY!!

  • I think the example sounds not very good.

  • um.. there was a mic on the snare when they were giving the sound demo? does that mean youll have to buy a mic for the snare too?

  • I need mic stands now

  • Don't x me y, I lol'd harrrrd!

  • not XY... capsules werent at 90' the mics were

  • is it a joke or not???

  • but you have a mic on the snare drum....

  • @calk1993 symbols...

  • Hey, how can I use that technique to make my bass drum more pronounced? In the vid of you playing it didn't sound very evident

  • ur funny :D

  • EPIC LINE IN YOUTUBE:

    "don't X me Y, it just works!"

  • don't X me Y

  • thanks for posting this recorddrums im gonna give it a go

  • you're welcome. I will be posting close microphone technique soon. Then you will be able to do multi microphone recording!

  • more bass drum.. but still perfect sound (:

  • yeah! the overheads can be a good sound on their own, but a kick microphone would be ideal!

  • @MarkusGronroos i agree, blame it on two things at this point: Drummer's technique and kick drum quality and head type.

  • AHAHAHA, THAT WAS A FUNNY JOKE.

  • " notice im not laughing because that was not a funny joke" Hahahah just the fact that you said that out lud, was funny. hahaha its all good, good info video

  • Feet off the floor! Are you kidding?

  • whos feet are off the floor?

  • You say 5 feet off the floor that isn't very high. Maybe 8 feet or more but not 5 feet. Your picture surely shows about 8 to 9 feet above the floor.

  • it only looks like they are higher because I am shooting the video from low on the ground. I actually measured and set them up at around 5 feet! Hope this helps

  • hahhahahaha

  • X an Y and with a Bass drum mic would be perfect

  • what do you actually plug the mics into tho??

  • haha that's what I'm always wondering too..

  • dont x me y it just works , notice im not laughing, it wasnt a funny joke

haha omg that was funny lol

  • ahhahah i made it up on the spot!

  • lmao. I'm laughing so hard right now, cause it was such a terrible joke, but you said it so seriously.

  • hmm.. thats pretty much how overheads sounds alone .. which it is.. you're getting a little bit of blury sound on the toms.... but nice idea to just use overheads.. works pretty good in a cheap mixing.. and geners like early rock nw roll.. beatles like :D

  • what sucks is it sounds like midi

  • hahaha I love midi.

  • lol dont x(ask)me y(why)

  • I cant hear bassdrum but still good vid 4/5

  • yeah! That will come in another episode on how to record the Kick!

  • this guy should be a comedien!!

  • I am. Check out my other youtube page. QUICKSKITS

  • LOL

  • ... don't "x" me "y" but it works??? jeeeezzz that made me laugh to death... thank's for the vid, it's extremely useful. But please tell me what about that thing called "phase problem" which is supposed to happen when 2 mics are that close?, how do I know when I have it and how to I solve it?

  • Phase problems can occur when two mics capture the same sound at different times- try googling "phase cancellation" to find out more.

The XY technique actually eliminates phase problems because sounds hit the mics at the same time.

  • yes, happyronbin said it right.

  • When the polar patterns are too close to each other the microphones will pick up the same frequency at the same time. It's a distinct sound that you can't really miss. To sort the problem, there's a switch on the mixer to cancel the phase. If, for any particular reason there isn't one, lower the fader of one mic. Problem solved.

  • That shouldn't work, unless your desk / mixer has a phase switch on it.

  • That's incorrect. You'd only need to do that if you were micing, say, a snare drum from the top and bottom simultaneously. The sound wave from the bottom mic would look like a miror image of the top mic, causing cancellation. You'd therefore flip the phase of the bottom mic - problem solved.

There is no need to flip the phase (or, more accurately, the polarity) of either mic when using the XY technique.

  • I see where you're coming from. Thanks :-)

  • correct. No need to flip phase in the xy technique. The 3 to 1 rule is pretty good to follow. For every foot one mic is from the source, make sure that any other mic is atleast 3 feet from that mic. Maybe I worded that right? hahaha

  • Depends on the microphone. SM58s usually have about 3 inches of a cardiod pattern. It depends on brand and model really. I'm a live engineer, so I usually battle to isolate the initial attack of a sound. In the studio, there's more room to play with and less background noise, making it easier to use less mics. I understand the snare phase arguement happyronbin. Wasn't too sure on this XY business. Thank you for your help also.

  • yeah pdw i have that exact kit :o

  • Its a great kit. I love the kick drum on it.

  • hahaha no dude...that became a funny joke when u said it wasnt...haha

  • i love it fast, easy and good

    thanks

  • don't x me y :D thanks for the instructions dude, ill try it the next time i track drums.

  • cool beans. Its simple and fast to set up!

  • will it work with any mic?

  • wheres your other tom at

  • good catch man. hahahahah

  • lol i was about to ask that too

  • would this work good with two sm57's? and an sm58 at the snare?

  • Yes it would. You will get a different sound with a different mic. Mess around and go with what sounds best to you man :)

  • x me y.... lol xD

  • HAAAAAAAAAAHHAHAHAH!! Notice Im not laughing, cause that was not a funny joke.

    I love it :)

  • lol @ xy

  • hahahahah
