Beautiful! In the documentary Back and Forth Dave called this "a love song to a dying friend" He wrote the song when Taylor was in the hospital. He is so amazing! :)
I know that in 40-some-odd years when this band is "old" people will look back on Dave and the Foos the way we look back on bands like the Rolling Stones now. Awesome.
@carlospv94 well I'd still consider this pretty modern and as the foos are still together I'd say we're really lucky that they are the few keeping music like this alive :) amongst the rest of the crap in the world like you say lol
There is only one true source of all music, all the rest is borrowed from the original and combined in different ways,.giving the illusion of copyright to certain individuals :)!
This song helped me through rough times in summer '05. I had just moved out on my own, just finished going through university full time & working, so I was physically/mentally exhausted, had lost my job and, & was fresh off my stepfathers death. For a few nights, I stayed up past midnight, stood in my living room with one lamp on, looking at a framed picture of both my stepfather & an eagle on a branch he had painted, & listened to this song. I started to feel better as a few nights passed by.
It was simply amazing how the peace and tranquility of the night, the simple beauty of one of my stepfathers' paintings, and this beautiful tune helped me feel better - how it all helped me mend. I absolutely love this song, and I absolutely love Foo Fighters.
@GJMSince1981 That's the amazing thing about not Just Foo Fighters music, but so much more underrated music in general. We can create these kinds of experiences that make us reflect on a turning point - we can really relate to these songs and understand. We can't relate to the garbage that we hear all over the radio about Fucking this many girls or throwing this much money.
I love this song. and everything else everything by the Foo Fighters. one of the few bands that actually write all they're music. Those kinds of bands are too few and far between. I have major respect for bands that write all they're own stuff and can actually make it sound good.
This is one of the few songs that just makes me cry. I love it, but it reminds me of the funerals of some amazing people I've needed to attend. This is, undoubtedly, the most depressing and heart-wrenching situation that I think a song can cover.
But it's one that needed to be written. Kudos, Foos.
It's been a while since I listened to this album but, everytime I hear this track it surprises me just how much I like it. Like a lot of people already stated; Foo Fighters are pretty underrated if it comes to the quality of their 'softer' tracks. A relatively simple yet beautiful mellow song.
everytime they show up when im listening to my shuffle songs i feel this feeling of.. i dont know.. i cant explain it.. almost a homey feeling.. its strange.
@Fluffiezz All disks, and dvds, compilations, and bunch of other stuff. in reality those disks are shared by my friends and me, coz we bought them with shared money.
July 23rd 2006 i woke from a 7 week coma after some drunken twat mounted the kirb and hit me.This was the song that i woke up to,apparentley i cant remember.Very important song for me this one.
thenextbest... I'm totally with you. I keep WAITING to get tired of their music, but every time I listen, I find something else that's like "holy crap" great. Just an AMAZING band - truly amazing.
I heard that Dave was suprised about the positive response they got about disc 2 of the album. I have to say that both parts of the album are very good, and I wonder where he got the inspiration :P. GOOD JOB FOO FIGHTERS!
No offence to your friend but she must be crazy! lol seriously there must be at least 2 or 3 songs she will like. Usually if people cant come up with a reason then they havent listened properly :D
it's the music of my last 3 years and i love to play that with guitar, especially in the final part, when there is the mini-assolo that totally gives you onto another planet...just like going over the sea and feel the breeze on your skin...beautiful!
I was expecting to like the "loud" cd1 better than the "quiet" cd2, but it turns out I really really really like the cd2 and even listen to that more than cd1! it's some awesome work, especially this song...
If a band puts out a song, it's their work whether, you think it sounds too 'Mainstream' or not... please, I hate people who like a bands first album, but refuse to believe any work after that 'betrays' the old album, This sounds like The Foo Fighters to me, damn it.
just as something that ive observed, anyone can get into foo fighter's famous stuff, like the pretender. Its not hard, but only someone who truly appreciates the Foo Fighters would choose this over one of their mainstream songs.
Forget about all this. This is still the mianstream stuff. Listen to the very first album, that's true Foo Fighters, that's what Dave intended the Foo Fighters to sound like seeing as he did everything. Guitars, Drums, Bass and Vocals.
This is not the mainstream.. Everlong, Best of you, The pretender is mainstream.. (a lot more btw)
Do you think that anyone would listen to foo fighters if they made the same tracks as they did in the first album.. bands evolve, get better, ... (splits up, gets together again and makes rubbish)..
i think dave does a pretty good job keeping the sound updated, and still FOO..
but this just shows that dave can do any type of music and it sounds great. i dont like country that much but if he wrote a country song and played it with the rest of the band i would listen to it. shit i would the album..
Intended to sound like? You guys don't really get what being a band is about. It's not about, "Oh, we want this sound. Let's limit ourselves to just this. Every other sound just isn't us." No. It's about the hang-time, the fun, the adventure of the world of music. That's why I love the Foos, Music is about self-expression. Bearing your soul to the world. And it's about never being afraid to produce something like a fucking piano ballad. Dave was finally able to rid that fear of his heart. Great
Chilled - perfectly stated. I feel like I just want to grab people and MAKE them listen to this band. I've been in music for almost 30 years. I've been a music fan for much, much longer, and I can't understand why people (more people anyway) don't GET how good this stuff is. This is CLASSIC - all-time stuff.
@BBCater hug you. My american loved one from Sarasota is on her way back to US and this OUR special song. Really, I don't know how people don't get how beautiful this melody is, drawing landscape in your mind. Probably they don't know how love is, any kind of love - for music or a special person, or either.
@BBCater I’m just going track by track through YouTube. Amazing work. That’s what makes Foo so incredible to me. They can rock like no one’s business, but they don’t sacrifice melody, harmony, and musicality. Even something so “in your face” as “The Pretender” is still musical. That’s awesome, to me. And then he turns out a work like THIS?!?!? It takes an artist, and Grohl certainly is one.
Got slightly side-tracked and was listening to Fleetwood Mac (trip down memory lane) and Alanis Morisette(most favourite female artist). Left this CD in the car, put it on today always totally blows me away! especially the 2nd C.D.
Foo Fighters can be intense and heavy in their music and sound great, yet they can also have a more mellow sounds and STILL sounds AMAZING! <3
