This song helped me through rough times in summer '05. I had just moved out on my own, just finished going through university full time & working, so I was physically/mentally exhausted, had lost my job and, & was fresh off my stepfathers death. For a few nights, I stayed up past midnight, stood in my living room with one lamp on, looking at a framed picture of both my stepfather & an eagle on a branch he had painted, & listened to this song. I started to feel better as a few nights passed by.

They can rock like no one’s business, but they don’t sacrifice melody, harmony, and musicality. Even something so “in your face” as “The Pretender” is still musical. That’s awesome, to me.
