mad westerners in search of the ultimate road trip, we travelled back from siliguir to benaris a different but exciting way to travel. But to be honest I would travel by road again it was truly a fantastic way to see India, glad you like it will post some more when I get time cheers pete
I specially enjoyed the part where you had the roadside meal at the dhabas. brought back so many momories. Personally I think proper Darjeeling is a very messy city, but if you to the outskirts it's so pretty that words fail to describe. And the best part of going to Darjeeling is the road trip. I will look forward to your future posts.
About this road trip ---> It's a wonderful one and thanks for posting. But who travels all the way to Darjeeling from Calcutta. Next time take a train to Siliguri and then rent a taxi (jeeps, landrovers etc.) to Darjeeling. It's much more comfortable to sleep in a train than bouncing your way through potholes and flood receded highways.
an annoying national trait but you get use to it and it probably saved our lives a few times their horn honking would rate up there with the Itallians cheers pete
Keep in mind most Indians drivers do not go thru a formal training as drivers in the western world. Most professional drivers are poor and learn driving on the fly. For instance people don't know to check blindspots or even to signal and change lanes. So by honking a horn you just let the (dumb) driver ahead of you that you are there.
Hi Kalyanc2005, sorry if I have offended I in no way meant to deigrate the drivers in India the driver we had on this trip was amazing his skill to be able to navigate an often treacherous road was truly amazing, I would have him drive me anywhere cheers pete
i have done similar in bihar, taking cars are much more luxurious than the local buses. well at least your were smiling in all your fear. hey at least you have stories to tell. once you start the climb just past siliguri it is all worth it.

Why is the driver honking the horn almost all the time? A national tradition?
