Sorry, I had just woken up and I was sick, so my brain wasn't working too quickly. And as far as the passport thing goes, I think the percentage is probably lower. 15-20% or so. We don't get out much. We have two options: Canada and Mexico. Canada is similar to the U.S. and Mexico is a third world country, so there's not much in the way of travel over here. That's why we don't know anything about the rest of the world. Just what's on the news, which doesn't have any international stories.

Ok. I'm an American-born Colombian/Irish person from Los Angeles, CA. I agree with you mostly. Honestly, it's not 90% of people that do not obtain a passport. There's plenty of more people that have one. The thing is though, is that this country is so large and there are so many things to explore that it's not really that much of a necessity to travel internationally. You could spend your whole life traveling around the United States but never see everything. I respect every nation by the way.

im not sure how england defines war, but for us, iraq is a "police action" the rules of engagment and mission is different, vietnam was a "conflict" also different. the ak47 fires a 7.62 x 39 mm, opossed to the 5.56 x 45 mm which is what most UN military's use. Soooo in fact the ak has more stopping power than an m 16 or g 36 or galil or the styr or most anything eles and cost a tenth of the price, and more reliability with less stopages after 6000 rds. rate of fire slower but thats better....

It is ridiculous. A lot of Europeans are completely biased about us Americans. They view us as all being ignorant but they are just as ignorant about american culture. Maybe it's the media that tells them about all of the bad things that happen in America. The stereotypes must go, they make me want to vomit

It's not just american that get stereotyped, it's every country and culture. And yes it is the media's fault. I mean if you type in (insert country here) stereotype, I will guarentee it will be what you think.

It's not like America gets scrutinized much anymore, it's more Islamics and Middle Eastern people then Americans as far as I'm aware. The only news Ive heard in a while is an accidental killing in Afghanistan, thats about it really. Us British arn't all sterotypical, just most of us.

(this carries on from the last comment I made) Like the hurricane's in Texas and New Orleans. I think there was something about Cuba being on fire and something about Haiti as well. Shit loads of news on American politics like Obama,(personally I think McCain's too old). News all over America, news about house prices going up here as well as gas and food and petrol. Also, all the news about other natural catastrophes in other countires.I think the American people should know about everything.

I found this quote from another site that explains the root issue perfectly. "Most Americans are profoundly ignorant of geography and dont give much thought beyond their immediate frame of reference. Before you think that means Americans are chauvinist, keep in mind they dont give a shit about the next state over, or even next city, much less another country. Well if that is true then it truly is a sad world we're living in. No wonder there's so many third world countries in this day and age. It's also quite sad that the only time something horrific happens like 9/11, that people will take care of each other no matter the age, race, religion or social class. When I see things like that happen every so often, I don't feel so sad about the world today.
But everything does boil down to what the government will tell us.

Well, our government is probably responsible for much of the problem because they tend to manipulate the media for their own selfish reasons. They like to insulate us from the rest of the world so they can tell us what they want us to hear and leave the rest out. When fascism comes to America, itll be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross — Sinclair Lewis. And due to McCain targeting the super-religious people in the South and Midwest areas who are also "flag-wavers," I don't doubt it.

So basically, the "International" news that we do get is talked about for maybe 5 or 10 minutes out of an hour and is talked about like you would be talking about how you tied your shoes this morning (not much emphasis on it unless it directly has an effect on the U.S. in other words). For instance, a lot of people didn't even know Tony Blair wasn't your PM anymore. I bet that if you asked the average American who Gordon Brown was, they wouldn't know because the news doesn't really cover it.

HAHAHA thats true I didn't know who he was until I read these comments and decided to look him up :P also just to let you all know I'm from the south and I don't sound like a "hick" though many of my friends (or their parents) do, and I have a passport, I've been to "The British Isles" or what ever you want to call them and might go to Germany soon with my roommate. I know two languages and I'm learning Gaelic (because I'm almost 100% Irish) so I think we Americans break stereotypes pretty well

Eh, but so many Americans are not insular. My mother told me who Fidel Castro and who Tony Blair was when I was a child when I asked. I get foreigners who don't know my state is on the continent of North America. You'd be surprised how many Americans get asked if they knew the president. I told an Englishman who Stephen Harper was. All issues you mentioned are in all countries. The fat people in the UK are just as fat in the USA. My information comes from British people and statistics.

Hi I'm the redhead in the video you are responding to, and I completely understand where you are coming from. To be honest the first thing I think of when I think about americans is perfection. Not in a good way, but in the way that everything in american life has to be perfect. So many plastic surgeries, , and pills for everything. But that doesn't necessarily mean it generalises to all americans. I like americans but, I hate americans who hate english people just because they're english.

Well, you seem to have preconceived notions about Americans. Don't you think that last statement you made is absurd? I think it boils down to some sort of superiority or inferiority complex that is deeply rooted in the psyche of English people. Irrespective of what you think of Americans, they generally don't take themselves as seriously as the English do. Just compare your video with this particular video. You don't need a better example.

Thank-you for the reply. This proves that the English people haven't actually lost their sense of humour! So, now I think I would be contradicting myself if I explain why I feel English people take themselves more seriously than the Americans. Anyway, what I really meant was that contrary to the English, generally Americans tend to be easy going and open, especially when it comes to expressing their own shortcomings. I could be wrong but it is only my view.

Don't worry even if you have a different point of view. Anyway, you also have a point and I don't completely disagree with you. My comments are less based on figment of my imagination than on actual experience. However, there is another issue as well. It is the social, economic and cultural divide. So, most of the people (wherever they are from) seldom look into others from their perspective. Perhaps I am being too analytical and intuitive at the same time. But I am not seriously joking.

Sorry, I had just woken up and I was sick, so my brain wasn't working too quickly. And as far as the passport thing goes, I think the percentage is probably lower. 15-20% or so. We don't get out much. We have two options: Canada and Mexico. Canada is similar to the U.S. and Mexico is a third world country, so there's not much in the way of travel over here. That's why we don't know anything about the rest of the world. Just what's on the news, which doesn't have any international stories.
