  • awesome! as some one who is just starting out in leather craft your vids are really helpful

  • Im sorry Bernie, that was a dumb question. Thanks for your response. I made a good whip, just want to do better. Thanks again. You are awesome. Doug

  • Bernie, I have been working with remnant cow hide using lace cutter and homemade splitter. Im doing a fair job but cant get strands thin enough while remaining strong enough. The kangaroo leather must be perfect. You make it look easy. What can you suggest? Maybe type of leather cause i cant afford roo.

  • @dugeclark66 Therein lies your problem, using remnant cowhide. I only work with kangaroo hide to make whips and am not familiar with the type of cowhides you can get in the US. Your best bet is to google some US whip makers and ask them the type of cowhide they use and perhaps they can supply you with a source.

  • Hi Bernie,

I appreciate all the information alot, thank you. I'm wondering if you might make a video on how to make that lace trimmer you show in this video, I'm going to make the beveller, but don't know that I can figure out the trimmer...if you have the time that would be great! If not, I can probably muddle it out on my own.

    Thanks again!

    Tom

  • @messmer777 G'day Tom . The lace trimmer is made the same way as the beveler except the cut is at 90 degrees instead of 60 degrees.

  • @bernie46

I realized that about 2 seconds after I posted that...my face is a little red....

  • @messmer777 you can also check out ron edwards how to make whips he has a section on cutting leather

  • Sorry about this, Bernie. I think I've been asking too many questions (more than I'll ever ask from my teachers). But how wide should the strands be for an 8 ft 12 plait bullwhip?

  • @packapunchwhips To get the width of strands for the overlay or to cover anything for that matter you multiply the diameter by 4.5 and divide that by the number of strands you want to use. So if your belly was 20mm x 4.5 = 90 divided by 12 and your strands would have to be 7.5mm wide to cover the belly.

  • are these the same shears you use in the video?: Mundial 870-8 Classic Forged 8-Inch Dressmaker Shears

  • @packapunchwhips I'll pm you with a link

  • @bernie46 thanks. that helps.

  • Hey Bernie, great video. Do you use drum stuffed hides? I bought a veg tanned hide that was not drum stuffed and it seems really dry and fibrous. Also, are you using red species or grey species kangaroo? Thanks!

  • @0tt00tt0 I use both and the drum stuffed do feel better to use but if you grease your strands with plenty of leather dressing I have found the dry hides are just as good. I get my drum stuffed from packer tanning and Richard Taubman, google either one of those and you should find them, The dry hides I get from Simon Martin here in Tasmania who sells them at a good price. I prefer the red kangaroo hides to the grey especially for finer work.

  • @bernie46 Thanks Bernie! By the way, I bought your videos some time back and they are great. Thanks for being such a great source of information!

  • @Zadeun Mainly because they are easy to get hold of and reasonably priced. For the strand cutter I use that you mentioned it is cosiderably more . Although I consider them to be far superior the Aussie strand cutter will do the job very well if someone is just doing this for a hobby or wants to cut a bit of lace.

  • Rule of thumb is one and a half times the thing you want to plait over . So an 8ft whip means you would need strands 12 feet long. I like to add an extra foot to be safe. If you were plaiting lets say an 8ft whip in 12 plait and you ended your whip in 8 strands like I do you would have 8 strands 13ft long, 2 strands say 10ft long just to be safe and 2 strands 8ft long. The shorter strands would be dropped into the core of the whip as the plaiting progresses and the whip gets narrower.

  • Hey Bernie, how long do you cut your strand for an 8ft whip en how do you calculate it..?

  • Hey Bernie, thanks for the video. i have a question about the stretching bit. in your DVD you used a different method of stretching the leather(using a screwdriver). i was wondering why you switched methods and which method is more effecient.

    thanks again!

  • @tyvek05 No difference really just this way I can do it sitting down. Old legs aren't what they used to be.

  • I see it all now... Thank you very much... I've been brading for about 40 years and I've never made my own lace before... I've just bought it... I don't know why I've not done it... I guess its because I don't need lace that is as wide to make western boots... Tandy lace was perfect for my needs... Ken
