My most influential memory of this song: The first time I heard it, I was about 8yrs old...and while this song was first getting air play on the radio... the footage being dominated on Television was coverage of the first Gulf War, "Operation Desert Storm". My most influential memory of this song: The first time I heard it, I was about 8yrs old...and while this song was first getting air play on the radio... the footage being dominated on Television was coverage of the first Gulf War, "Operation Desert Storm". One of those 'realization' moments when you're young like 'hey, the world is a pretty big place, and its really messed up right now', its sad how so little has changed and in ways--has gotten worse.

Hey look: it's a five minute song & you can't explore philosophical abstractions within the constraints of the lyric to a five minute song - sometimes you have to use shorthand. But it's a great song, an inspiring & moving song, and I don't like to see the Bible-bashers annexe it to use as grist to the mill of their infantile view of existence. This isn't the Middle Ages, the sun doesn't go round the Earth and the earth isn't flat. We have quantum physics, carbon dating and Hubble. So shut up!

Incidentally, she's dropped the key a semi-tone to F# from the key of G in the "Woodland" video. For me, this Las vegas one is just a shade better though I do like her "Dusty Springfield" mannerisms in the "Woodland" version and there was a cracking snare sound as well! If one can find a way to rationalise the lyric so it's both non-partisan and non-religious, I think one can find spirituality in it but also a warning. Whatever, the music and performance are poignant and moving. A cracker Bette!

There's an ongoing query about the song's meaning. Sidestepping the "God Squad" who always start spewing dogma over such things, I wonder if it isn't a very sad song?: From a long way off, everything looks as if it is, and should be, hunky-dory; it's only when one gets nearer, that one realises how fucked up the world is - and mankind has done it - but there is still a force for good amongst us. "Free will" means that we have to sort it out for ourselves though. Big Daddy ain't gonna fix it.
