I think in the beginning they take it a little fast. Still a beautiful performance. My band is playing this song for UIL. We're trying to get it up to par. I'm hoping we'll do good. And I've got my oboe solo... Gotta nail that!
french horns becareful with your high A's dont shoot over them and make sure they are in tune amazing piece played it this past year we got sweepstakes although i must say for all those french horns your sound does not progress through the entire band. work on the octave skips mainly the f sharps and the a to a and in the staff a to the above the staff a
I don't think I've ever loved a piece as much as I've loved this one...except MAYBE October(Eric Whitacre). The high voices at measure 54, and the tenor sax/euphonium during the trumpets solo with their eighth note/triplet line, and the middle voices near the end with their sixteenth note run...they all give me more goosebumps that being cold. I love this song more than life itself
we just started playing this..i love it. the baritone/low reed solo at 3:06 is the coolest thing. i think they could have played it a lot more powerful though! the clarinets and flutes are beating the low brass!
and 3:41 clarinet/flute solo is beautiful. thats another great part.
but for some constructive criticism, this band really needs to work on balance and tuning. the solos are beautiful, but as i said, the high woodwinds are beating the low voices, and that shouldn't be happening.
I sightread this in my Wind Symphony class today... My director told us what it was about and I felt it strike a chord deep inside me. The piece affects me personally, having been through some unpleasant things throughout my childhood... I love this piece so much. It is so very beautiful.
Camphouse really mastered the art of switching back and forth between tense "gross" for lack of a better word, sounding keys and clusters, to some of the most beautiful resolutions and keys.
It's a pity that this piece is not more well known. I think it is because it is hard to appreciate this piece until you play it. I have not met a person who has played this piece on any instrument and has not fallen in love with it. It's just too powerful.
omg, i totally agree with you. it seems like not enough know about this piece. it is the most powerful song i have ever played and wow i can't even describe it. its just... perfect... i wish i could play it again...
I would just like to say that this song meant alot more for me once I found out what it is actually about. This song is about a specific tramatic case of child abuse. The goal of the song is to have you feel the disturbing feeling of the song. It is almost haunting, vbut so beautiful how sudden it all just shoots at your heart.
so this is awesome. my band is doing this right now. but its an inexperienced band so we sound like we're butchering it. not even close to sounding good..
omg, love this song!!! my band got camphouse to do a clinic and he directed us at our concert!! totally life-changing! i still get shivers and want to cry every time i hear the ending.
I played this as part of a university ensemble...one of the most important and moving musical experiences in my life. The story behind the piece...just incredible.
This truly is a monumental composition. Not the best rendition, but this is a middle class 5 difficulty song imo, so very very hard for a high school level band (honor or not) to produce w/o error.
This is my all-time favorite song. EVER. I would have interpreted certain parts differently, mostly in regard to the tempo in the legato passages, but this was still very impressive... especially from the 6:15 marker! That sound is HUGE!

This is such a beautiful piece, and I really thought so until our director told us what it was about!
It's still amazing though. I love the chimes part, that sounds like a bell tolling.
