I find the best way to fly a helicopter is with analogue gamepad (collective right stick and rudder and throttle left stick) its so easy, even though ive built a proper helicopter cockpit now with real controls I prefer gamepad.

@Xzefreeman Buy a cheap analogue gamepad, I got mine for £5 on ebay delivered, you could even use the gamepad just for the rudder control, screw it to some wood and screw a bit of wood to the analogue stick and use your feet to control it, this is pretty much what I did and it works great.

cyclic control to turn pitch nose forward to pick up speed pull back to slow down,as you move the cyclic it alters the pitch of the blades,collective pitch lever,gives you power to gain height,as you lower the collective you lose height,its a matter of ballance to flying a helicopter

@livingjustfordying You use the same controls that move the rudder pedals on planes. You might need to turn off autorudder in the realism settings (it gives the tail rotor more authority). If you don't have real pedals for your computer, I suggest a three axis joystick (i.e. one that you can twist for rudder control, in addition to the normal forwards/backwards and left/right motions for elevator and rudder, which would be cyclic in the helicopter)

@livingjustfordying Lol, if you stop flying helicopters and stick to small planes for a while, you should save enough virtual fuel to be able to afford one :). Actually I bought my cheap one for less than €40 if I remember correctly...

You don't need a tutorial for FSX..It's too easy..The helicopters in Grand Theft Auto fly more realistically than this..Try X-plane.

@DDAY0111 A real helicopter whose tail has broken off in flight would start to spin uncontrolloable just as they do in Grand Theft Auto:4. But your disc of lift that the rotors create will be shifting because everytime the heli spins, the direction the disc was tilted in will change, so eventually it's going to end up crashing into something or if there's nothing to crash into, the pilots just going to have to land the best he can.

Because the power is conected to the collective! the throttle is on it, you can move it by the mouse only!
