One of the best, definitely. However, he rubbed many people in Hollywood up the wrong way in the late 70s, early 80s and so he didn't get the scripts that would have kept him at the top in terms of hit movies. But his technical genius as well as his brilliance with actors has never wained, I feel.
By all accounts he's a prick but luckily that has no bearing on his skills as a filmmaker. He just showed he's still got it with Bug which is one of the best American films in recent years. Too bad most people think it begins with The French Connection and ends with The Exorcist.
