Obviously you do considering you brought the subject up. Kuerten was more than a 'what if'. He won three French Opens and was ranked #1 in the world and top 2 for two years straight. But I'm not talking 'what ifs', I'm talking what was. Kuerten WAS less consistent and head strong. It's just a simple fact I'm pointing out that explains why Fed was able to bagel him. Not to mention Kuerten was on the decline after 2001 and would never win another slam again. These are facts, not 'what ifs'.
agree 100%, nobody was touching Nadal on clay in his prime (and even now), I mean come on, Nadal losing a set to anyone at the French Open is a sensation, whereas a 20-year old Federer bageled the then 2-time defending FO champion on clay, no comparison, really
First of all, one set is nothing to base such broad conclusions off of. Talent-wise, Kuerten is up there with the top clay courters of all time. He was just a little less consistent and head strong than Nadal and Fed overall, and didnt train as hard either.
ehmmm so you think that vs other great players Federer was supposed to lose before 2004 but after that he was not allowed to lose once? It's not that plain and simple, my friend. Federer beat Kuerten in Hamburg in 2002 and Kuerten beat Federer at the French Open in 2004 where it should be the other way round, I guess, tennis is a bit more complicated
@Swordsman808 pure BS. Kuerten was raping everyone on clay between 1999-2001 and a past his prime Guga straigh setted Federer at Roland Garros 2004. It is still the last time Federer lost in a Slam before the Round of 16.
Interesting how burly Federer appeared in his younger days. Everyone talks about Rafa's arms and the size and weight of other players but Federer was heavier in the chest and has always been wide in the shoulders. I wonder why he decided to lose the weight.
@Swordsman808 Unfortunately tennis doesn't work like that. I also saw Ferrero whip up on Rafa in Rome well after Ferrero's decline. Rafa isn't a good match up for Federer. Guga would have an easier time on clay against Rafa than Federer does.
Plus, didn't Guga beat Federer at the French in 2004?
some ridiculous points in this one, fantastic from both guys

@RBaltovi
when you're hitting the spots as efficiently as federer does, muscles arent that important
footwork is, however, federer's bread and butter, so my guess is he lost weight to be more agile
foul01 1 year ago
@foul01
his swing style has changed, too. Both for forehand and serve. It is more compact now. he prolly had more speed before.

@Swordsman808 but remember later when Fed is Fed, he was beaten by Guga 2 times ;)
ductrung3993 1 year ago 2
Remember Fed also beat the next clay king Rafa 6-0 on clay.
When Fed get in the zone, clay gives him time to unleash skill and craft.
Unfortunatly this does not last longer than a set.
