DC was only a catalyst for Miss Thang #2 B's career. Letoya Luckett said so herself. All the backing vocals were majority B herself. So in my mind, they were never a true real group. If they were, then where are they now? EnVogue is still here singing like never before! Let's celebrate THEIR MUSIC and nobody else's. They have their own posts.

Destiny's Child is only Beyonce with backup singers, the comparison is kinda moot...these ladies shared the spotlight and made it a real vocal GROUP. But as such, would not be able to make solo careers. It's all or nothing.
En Vogue, Xscape, TLC, and Boyz II Men = all have that discipline to showcase each member's contribution and strength, without overshadowing one another.

En Vogue doesn't need you to put Beyonce down in order for their talent to be recognized. Beyonce doesn't need you to put En Vogue down in order to defend her work. Beyonce has stated numerous times that En Vogue was a huge influence on her (Destiny's Child). There all great artists and big assets to R&B.
Beyonce couldn't PAY to be a member of EnVogue! For one thing, EVERY member of EnVogue could not only SING (an area Beyonce suffers in), but they could each sing LEAD!!!! Beyonce, at best, just shakes her "stuff" across stage. That's SO old and SO cheap. EnVogue STILL had what it takes 20 years later for their reunion concert. @Lordfinese19 Sales don't really mean anything when it comes to comparing talent and class. Sales is more marketing (and the factors BEHIND marketing) and timing. So to say one group is better because they had more sales, is a bad argument. EV and DC obviously had different relationships with their labels. EV also had a lot more talented competition. DC came out in an era when music was getting crappy, focusing more on image than substance.

I'm 51. As far as I can tell, EnVogue is better than any woman group before or since. Still, I appreciate all the others. I also want to say I'm a little embarassed when I hear people say that the music of their generation was the best. I used to hear the same thing from old blokes when I was a kid and vowed never to think like that.

En Vogue was and still is the only group which had four members (sometimes three members when they become "EV3") that all singers are considered lead singers. It is not fair to compare Destiny's Child, Brownstone, Pure Soul, Zhane, etc to this group. This was a 1 in a million chance that four female lead singers who would have such harmonious vocal flow. We have been teased for years that there will be another En Vogue album. If not, I am waiting on the next 1 in a million female group.
@hesjr1972 Brownstone shared lead as well at least between Maxi and Nicci. I wouldn't compare them to EV though except to say that in the 90s there just so many quality harmony groups around. Each very good in their own right. EV are special though. Everything just comes together. Saw them a couple of days ago live in London. What a show! I was an excited little girl all over again ;-)

but see the only reason Beyonce carried it is because the arrangements were still built around her. in En Vogue the leads were chosen by whose voice best sold the song and the arrangements then were built around them. In DC, it didn't matter who was singing lead the songs were built around Beyonce's voice, which is why so much of Kelly's phrasing was so much like B's and why her voice can be heard so prominently in the backgrounds.
The Beatles covered a lot of "Girl Groups" when they started out. When I heard this beautiful and ingenious version, it brought it all home to me. The circle is complete.

I miss the good ol' days listening to them in late elementary-junior high school, making up a mock En Vogue group with my cousins. No one in this day in age except singers from the 90's and down can sing like this. This new crap out is nothing compared to what we had. Its amazing they can get on here and not even have to dress sexy and outsing the hell out of everyone and still be beautiful.

EV did dress sexy sometimes, let's face it, sex does sell. But the huge contrast between EV & DC/Beyonce is that EV didn't need to do it all the time to get people to pay attention to them. EV's voices spoke/sang for themselves. I'm not a Bey-hater; I actually like her, but let's give credit where it's due. Bey sang lead and the others lipped it . Each EV member had a hit song while singing lead. And speaking of dressing sexy, don't get me started on that BET performance of Ave Maria.

They are two COMPLETELY different voice types with different ranges.. terry can go up into her whistle register while maxine is more capable in her lower chest n doesnt seem to have much range in upper chest.. she seems to always have to transition
very serious. Just because her upper range isnt the strongest doesnt mean that she cant hit and hold those notes. Terry Midrange is weak and she said it herself but just because it is weak doesn't mean she cant hit the notes and hold them also. Trust imma huge fan.
Terry's mid may be weak which is why she doesn't hold notes in her mid range.. but she can go higher in her falsetto range.. she the highest one of them four... Maxine can't go NEARLY as high as terry in chest OR head.. but i must admit maxine's voice has this quality to it.. its mesmerizing.. i find her tone the most distinctive outta all four of them
thats true. terry can hit the hightest notes but is still tied for having range with max. Max can hit the lowest notes. Range isnt all about hitting high notes . Terry is my favorite of course but ppl seem to think that she by far have more range then the rest of them. She has the most but max is realy really close. Then i think its cindy(cindy and terry can go into whistle but cindy doesnt have strong low range) and then dawn.
Maxine's chest range seems to have shrunk a lot. She sang a G#5 on Lies even when they performed it live but now she has to push for an F5. She and Terry both had soprano range back in the day, but it's gone somehow. Terry can still get up there though.
i think its because terry was still working on her voice and max just took a break. Either way it goes they all can sing their asses off and i love all of them equally.
they are still peforming live shows. i just saw them in atlanta about a month ago and believe me when i say not only did they all still look GREAT but they still sounded WONDERFUL!!!! my only regret is that they didn't sing more of their songs.
its not about being mixed either, cindy and mariah just have similiar tones and range. mariah is better obviously, no1 is as good as her but Cindy sounds just like Mariah on Your All I Need.
Cindy doesn't have the range of Mariah although they do have similar tones if you are talking about her singing on this song. Maxine actually has the widest range and could sing rings around Mariah
Well Cindy and Mariah are both Mixed so I think thats why they sound similar at times. They both have that pop appeal in their voice and its smothered with soul.
Purely and simply... Performances such as these mark the true definition of SINGING. I don't know what those other girls are doing with themselves, but before they pick up microphones and call themselves "singers", they should shut up and take heed. And then go sit down somewhere.

So to say one group is better because they had more sales, is a bad argument. EV and DC obviously had different relationships with their labels. EV also had a lot more talented competition. DC came out in an era when music was getting crappy, focusing more on image than substance.

En Vogue was and still is the only group which had four members (sometimes three members when they become "EV3") that all singers are considered lead singers. It is not fair to compare Destiny's Child, Brownstone, Pure Soul, Zhane, etc to this group. This was a 1 in a million chance that four female lead singers who would have such harmonious vocal flow. We have been teased for years that there will be another En Vogue album. If not, I am waiting on the next 1 in a million female group.

but see the only reason Beyonce carried it is because the arrangements were still built around her. in En Vogue the leads were chosen by whose voice best sold the song and the arrangements then were built around them. In DC, it didn't matter who was singing lead the songs were built around Beyonce's voice, which is why so much of Kelly's phrasing was so much like B's and why her voice can be heard so prominently in the backgrounds.

EV did dress sexy sometimes, let's face it, sex does sell. But the huge contrast between EV & DC/Beyonce is that EV didn't need to do it all the time to get people to pay attention to them. EV's voices spoke/sang for themselves. I'm not a Bey-hater; I actually like her, but let's give credit where it's due. Bey sang lead and the others lipped it . Each EV member had a hit song while singing lead. And speaking of dressing sexy, don't get me started on that BET performance of Ave Maria.

I LOVE beyonce she is my favorite artist of now but en vogue is my favorite ever and beyonce has nowhere near the range all of them has showed and if she does she never showed it in a performance or in studio and trust i got all of beyonce stuff but en vogue slays DC but beyonce is on their level.

Max sings bass true, but her voice is actually very high pitched. Only Cindy is higher.

were talking about parts in the music not individual voices. a soprano is always gonna be a soprano, they can't change their voice. But anybody can sing the bass part of a harmony. 2 completely different things.
Even Cindy has a bass, remember funky divas when she left it on the bus iLOL !

They are two COMPLETELY different voice types with different ranges.. terry can go up into her whistle register while maxine is more capable in her lower chest n doesnt seem to have much range in upper chest.. she seems to always have to transition

very serious. Just because her upper range isnt the strongest doesnt mean that she cant hit and hold those notes. Terry Midrange is weak and she said it herself but just because it is weak doesn't mean she cant hit the notes and hold them also. Trust imma huge fan.

Terry's mid may be weak which is why she doesn't hold notes in her mid range.. but she can go higher in her falsetto range.. she the highest one of them four... Maxine can't go NEARLY as high as terry in chest OR head.. but i must admit maxine's voice has this quality to it.. its mesmerizing.. i find her tone the most distinctive outta all four of them

thats true. terry can hit the hightest notes but is still tied for having range with max. Max can hit the lowest notes. Range isnt all about hitting high notes . Terry is my favorite of course but ppl seem to think that she by far have more range then the rest of them. She has the most but max is realy really close. Then i think its cindy(cindy and terry can go into whistle but cindy doesnt have strong low range) and then dawn.

Maxine's chest range seems to have shrunk a lot. She sang a G#5 on Lies even when they performed it live but now she has to push for an F5. She and Terry both had soprano range back in the day, but it's gone somehow. Terry can still get up there though.

i think its because terry was still working on her voice and max just took a break. Either way it goes they all can sing their asses off and i love all of them equally.

they are still peforming live shows. i just saw them in atlanta about a month ago and believe me when i say not only did they all still look GREAT but they still sounded WONDERFUL!!!! my only regret is that they didn't sing more of their songs.

all the members in EV are mixed.
its not about being mixed either, cindy and mariah just have similiar tones and range. mariah is better obviously, no1 is as good as her but Cindy sounds just like Mariah on Your All I Need.

Cindy doesn't have the range of Mariah although they do have similar tones if you are talking about her singing on this song. Maxine actually has the widest range and could sing rings around Mariah

Well Cindy and Mariah are both Mixed so I think thats why they sound similar at times. They both have that pop appeal in their voice and its smothered with soul.

maxine's hair was NOT a mess! no different from a frickin mohawk or cropped afro, which were "en vouge" in the late 80s/early 90s...don't front on the natural hair-do!!
