I have a Berrigan record that I picked up about 1947. Somebody Else is Taking My Place on one side and Me and My Melinda on the other. Is anybody familiar with this recording? Ihave never seen it listed
The numbers you refer to were recorded in New York in 1942. Danny Richards is the vocalist on "Me And My Melinda" and Kay Little is vocalist on the other one.The Band members were:
Bunny Berigan; Kenny Davis; Bobby Mansell& Freddy Norton (T/P). Charlie Stout & Max Smith (T/B). Walt Mellor & George Quinty (A/S). Tony Estren (B). Eugene Kutch (P). and Jack Sperling (D).
Thank you for this post , to see this giant is a real treat, his playing makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I am curious if there is a list of all the singers he accompinied
As a member of the Berigan family (my dad is/was Bunny's cousing) - I cannot begin to tell you what joy it is to see him perform on film. This is wonderful.
This is a sweet piece. I appreciate the posting, as it is hard to find examples of Bunny on film. As a trumpeter he had few equals, and Louis Armstrong himself, when asked why he didn't perform "I Can't Get Started" said, no, that's Bunny's. It's not a contest. Bunny's vocals were quite good.
As a counter arguement to trumpet players being "vocally challenged", Louis Armstrong and Chet Baker must be included, neither were crooners but, musicians and sang notes like an instrument (listen to Berigan and Baker)
Perhaps Armstrong was not a crooner but he did invent modern singing and his contribution can never be forgotten. His phrasing is the basis for all that came after and he is sadley not credited as he should be
Bunny did a fine job here. He was no Crosby, was no Sinatra, not even a Valee. He was a Trumpet player, first and foremost. And it's his horn playng that he's remembered for best. You should know this.
He was better then many who interupted a song but anyway ... he sang in the style of the day and did it well. He was great and it is sad the bottle got to him. And could anyone else sing Can't Get Started as well? Don't believe so.
I agree with you entirely. Was it not Louis that stated he would not record 'I can't get started' as long as Bunny was alive. Whether on the coronet or the trumpet, Berigan was one of the finest players of the 20th century and his 'I can't get started' is one of the great classics of the 20th century.
Very rare appearance of Bunny on film-- he only sang when it was necessary. Unfortunately, he met the same fate that Bix did- the bottle got to him in the end, in June of 1942.
Most trumper players seem to be "vocally challenged" lol. I give you Herb Alpert and Maynard Ferguson - both sing and mostly on par with you and I! Enjoyable nonetheless.

And to think that there are people who seriously say that Bunny couldn't sing!

Never thought I'd get to see Bunny performing. This is just great. If I can find some actual footage of Lee Wiley, it would be doubly great!

Actually my comment was meant as a complement Armstrong, Berigan and Baker sang pure notes as they played on their instruments.

oh come on ... Berigan a bad vocalist?
Don't think so.

Bunny Berigan was a great trumpeter but quite a bad vocalist. Okay, one chord for the music, one for the audience and one vocal for the rent ...
