I'm very interested at your work Dr. My sister was a 31 year-old female with a past medical history of rheumatic fever who presented with symptoms of congestive heart failure. She had been diagnosed with mitral stenosis and underwent percutaneous mitral balloon dilatation a few years earlier. Now she is fine and normal thanks for your video.
My doctor told me I had that when I was 15 at the time I was depressed and taking meds, while struggling with anxiety and panic attacks, I had vertigo and low exercise tolerance. I was also smoking cigarettes. I'm 19 now and rarely feel the pain because all I do now is exercise but I'm not depressed or do cigarettes anymore. I still have trouble with my endurance sometimes.
i have MVP and i just turned 14, i found out when i was 9. i go for check ups every 16 - 18 months, i am going for my next one September 23rd this year, so in about a month. they always suggest to my parents if they want me to have surgery, my parents said no, they have now given that decision up to me. i was wondering, how many percent of people die from having this surgery?
If you have a mechanical heart valve and the noise keeps you awake at night - but you DON'T want to use drugs or narcotics to sleep - you can purchase a non-addictive inexpensive, psychoacoustic audio recording titled "Heartbeat River" at cdbaby.com
i was diagnosed with MVP 12 yrs ago after what i thought was having a heart-attack while exercising. However after seeing a cardiologist he said, i was merely having anxiety attacks but when asked how i could have/might have gotten it? he said well if your extremely active (physically) which i was, you might have changed the way your heart is flows & said its pretty common for athletes & olympians to be diagnosed with this. My question is. is this true??? cuz either or i am doing just fine :) ty
thank you very much for the information! I am currently a nursing student with a lot of stress going on in my life, i love drinking coffee, i party a lot drinking alcohol nd inhaling cigarette smokes from friends. I was diagnosed of MVP when I was in high school and ignored it because my doctor said it was a mild case and i'll definitely outgrew it. This past few days I experienced easy fatigability, dyspnea, severe palpitations(even at rest), heartburns. Now i know why.
I have passed out, i actually got pain, my bp dropped and my hr skyrocketed while sitting,I thought i was having a TIA, and i was told at hospital dehydration, they didnt even do a troponin or CKMB. Even though i told them, okay fam. hx of young strokes occuring in family. My mvp i feel is relentless, ive had the flutter 2 days. I never get panicky. Its embarrasing going out with friends, and passing out. Idw to go to dr, i dont want meds, so thanks for the help, im doing LSC!
I too have mitral valve prolapse and it has controlled my life for2 years now and im just getting help...doctors also thought it was panic attacks...until finally i went to see a good doctor and he made me get a heart ultrasound and an ekg my ekg was abnormal and so was the ultrasound so now i am taking PROPRANOLOL and it does reduce the pain and the feeling of my heart pounding and so far no panic attack yet. the doctor alson gave me an aspirin a day and nitros for pain IM 23.
I have mitral valve and my symptoms can sometimes be really bad...for years they thought it was panic attacks but finally I was diagnosed...People really don't understand how bad it is until you have it. It has really taught me alot though. When I first was diagnosed i went through a bad depression cause it's hard to live with but thanks be to the Lord Jesus Christ he has gave me great strength to carry this cross.
@maranatha1985 I can really relate to what you are saying...people really don't understand what is like. I have been struggling with dealing with MVP for the last 6 yrs...at first I didn't know what was wrong with me until Feb. 2010 I found out it was MVP... I'm trying to learn to stay calm when I have those heartracing moments!
MVP is the mildest heart condition a person can have. So if God planned for you to have this condition, then thank goodness it's this one.
BTW, I dont have MVP. I have mitral regurgiation, left ventricular hypertrophy(thinkening/enlargement of the left ventricle- in sme cases causes sudden death), and hypertension Im 14 years old. I visit the cardiologist every 4 months, meaning I need close-follow up I am on beta-blockers. I plan to apply for the make-a-wish foundation in about a year or so.
U really are a thick kid, and obviously not a doctor and self consumed. It is not the mildest heart condition and can be life threatening idiot, it also interferes with 1's life very much.
You get alot of mild cases but also severe cases, and inless u have it and live with it, u havnt a clue! So these ppl that are having to hav heart surgory on their mitral valves they shud be thanking god??? I have mitral valve and suffer on a daily basis coz of it. Also if bacteria gets on it, that can kill
i was diagnosed with mvp last 2005, i'm 25 years old now.. i was on inderal medication for awhile, then i gradually stopped.. also was prescribed with isoket and that other drug, but made me feel sicker. . also i took magnesium + zinc supplements, which i can say relieved some of the symptoms..
though its very difficult having a mvp syndrome, we just have to live with it..
She is absolutely right! I started getting 500mg Magnesium per day, and drinking ONLY water each day, and extra with exercise, and most of my discomfort went away - sometimes no problems for mths, until stressed. Give up Starbucks, tea (except herbal), and all alcohol --all diuretics and that is how we lose magnesium and salt from bodies, and get pain in chest. Start speed walking for exercise daily, too. If you have "regurgitation of valve" that is different, serious, see your doctor.
i am a diagnosed with mvp as well, during college years at a nursing school.... i had thoughts of stopping school, and take a rest from stressful life, but then when i finally had myself medicated by specialist, i decided to continue school, since meds helps alleviate symptoms a lot, though sometimes, it really triggers.. now, i'm a registered nurse and a registered midwife.. but i decided not to work in hospital because it makes me palpitate and exhausted.
@metgard hi I'm a nursing student with mild mitral valve prolapse.. I guess you too can enroll in nursing depending on the case of MVP that you have. My doctor told me that I have nothing to worry about and there are no restrictions, so he gave me a medical certificate and allowed me to enroll. When I watched this video I was very thankful because it helped me avoid things that did worsen my symptoms..specially caffeine. Good luck on the career that you will be taking up!
Thanks for the info. I already knew some stuff about MVP. I am an 18 year old male, which is odd because it's usually middle-aged women who get this disorder. Let's see, on8:05 I saw something, it said keep feet up. Does that mean when my heart starts beating crazy fast, that I should sit down and put my feet over my head? lol
Thank you all for your nice comments. I have gotten many e-mails on how to best get the book-Taking control: Living with the Mitral Valve Prolpase Syndrome (3rd edition). It is faster and cheaper to merely send a check or money order to: Kardinal Publishing c/o Dr. Scordo, PO Box 626, Loveland, OH 45140. Total cost is $22.90/book. Usual turn around time is one week from when the order is received. Thanks
This info is so helpful,I have had gone 18years w people,docs,etc..That I was having panic attacks.i have done alot of research on this condition since the right dr diagnosed me w it.I don't know if this helps anyone but I learned that mvp is either u are born w it or got it through a airborne blood pathogen.Example:Surgery I strongly believe that I got while in surgery.I feel all your pain though. Its a battle for sure, just have faith and use the info on this video it does help God Bless!
I also have mvp im 22 and was diagnosed with anxiety disorder in 2006 I couldnt get out of bed at first or even walk due to fatigue my heart would race. My anxiety is getting a little better but my heart is worse. I cannot sleep on my left side due to palpitations so bad I feel like im going to have a heart attack. Its started like 2 palps a month to sometimes 10 or more a night.I now have complete insomnia and need a heart doctor to see how bad it is.
i had the same exact problem, my hole left side went numb and i had to go to the hospitol, turns out i was just having really bad palpitations. I also deal with a lot of anxiety in my life, and during periods of a lot of stress I can only sleep on my right side to prevent the pain from getting worste, it feels like a lung stitch from running in your heart...
i've been in bodybuilding two years ago until i stopped when i learned that i have a MVP. i want to know if it is safe to lift weights. does anybody with MVP doing this?
Hey I have had MVP since I can remember and also was an avid bodybuilder, I have never had a problem. About 4 years ago I started getting a tight feeling in my chest and a shortness of breath. I have since then modified my routine to not be as intense mainly body weight excersise...yeah it sucks because I still want to go heavy, but am afraid to cause of that crapy feeling I get. If you still feel good lifting I would say keep going... I would suggest to check with your Doc if you have a concern
I think I may have MVP - my symptoms are panic attacks, high heart beat rate, fatigue, shortness of breath and skipped/extra beats. What non-medicated techniques work best to restore normality? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Definately you have MVP, those are the symptoms. I think trying to stay stress free is the most important thing... I know how you feel it sucks. I would recommend also trying to keep your heart in general as healthy as possible low fat diet, omega 3, 6,9 oils, etc
This is a very good video! I have MVP, panic disorder and anxiety. I also can't smoke weed. It makes my heart race out of my chest. It feels as though I'm having a heart-attack, and I have talked to many people that say that weed does the same thing to them as well.
I'm SO glad I found this video because it led me to her book, which is fantastic. It really helped me understand what mitral valve prolapse is all about. HIGHLY recommend getting a copy of the book.
i just been diagnosed with MVP, MR (R = regurgitation), PR and TR and this video gave me better understanding. It is much easier to understand from video then from writing. I got echoed. Should I trust this diagnosis? I am suffering from skipped and extra heartbeats. Anyway you probably dont have much time either.. Plz post more videos on these problems they will help many people like this one helped me! and you have a very kind and beautiful voice.. :) ty bye
Echocardiography is perfect to diagnose MVP...Don't worry about your skipped (or extra) heartbeats: they are a normal situation in young and healthy hearts and this should cause no worry at all unless they makes you faint...bye
oh hi! thx for your help :) i stil having "beats", in stressed situations especially it sucks :( and I cant smoke weed since afew years coz i get panic attacks:( I dont like it! thx anyway :)
Wow, that's funny!!! I have MVP and the irregular heartbeat thing (skipped beats and then a whole bunch of extra beats) and I used to smoke weed now and then, but the past few years I haven't been able to unless I drink alcohol with it because it makes my heart race and then I have a panic attack!!! And all this time I thought I was a freak :o)

probably, if it's not severe enougth to prevent you from living a normal life and going to school to get your degree
you should get an OK from your doctor thought, nursing school is tough
